Slogging Through Interleague Play: Cubs vs. Athletics Preview, Wednesday 6/16, 7:05 CT
I don't have a whole lot to say about this evening's game; the best thing about it might be that it's not going to rain tonight.
What's really saddest about this season is that, as I have said many times, the National League has no dominant teams. No, not even the Phillies (who have lost 17 of their last 25) or Cardinals (losers of six of their last nine). No one. There are three really bad teams in the NL -- the Astros (bad as they are, they are underperforming their Pythagorean projection by four games), the Diamondbacks (who just made Aaron Heilman their closer) and the Pirates (who have lost nine in a row and are on pace to score 526 runs, which would be the fewest scored in the NL in a non-strike year since the Dodgers scored 519 in 1967, in a pitcher's park in a pitcher's era).
The other 13 teams in the NL, including the Cubs, are still -- with almost 40% of the season gone -- within nine games of each other. If the Cubs would ever wake up and play the way I believe they are capable of playing, a six or seven game winning streak would have them back in contention.
If not, it's 2011 time. On to tonight's game.

Gio Gonzalez was a supplemental first-round pick of the White Sox in 2004. They traded him to the Phillies in the Jim Thome deal, then reacquired him for Freddy Garcia, then traded him to the A's for Nick Swisher and got back... no one who's still with the team. Meanwhile, Gonzalez, who won't be 25 until September, is having a pretty good year for the A's. He has never faced the Cubs; the only Cub he has faced is Marlon Byrd (1-for-3).
Ryan Dempster has never faced the A's. The member of their team he's faced the most is Kevin Kouzmanoff (4-for-8 in his time with the Padres). Dempster has faced 28 of the 30 major league teams; the A's and Angels are the only ones he has yet to face -- he'll miss the weekend series vs. the Angels.
Today's game is on WGN and CSN California. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

I have a softball game
to go to but will check in when I get back.
Pitch well Demp!!!
A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day
The end
can we get
a game thread for that?

I see Lou still doesn't believe
Colvin can hit LHP and Lee is a cleanup hitter and Theriot is our best choice at leading off. Why do we even bother to hope with a stubborn manger who doesn’t even know what the cure might be. It’s disgusting.
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.
FYI the worst part of this is Colvin probably has played against Gonzalez
They were in the same league It was back in 07 but he may be one of the only guys on the team who has seen him before.

That's a "play not to lose lineup"
if ever there was. It seems that the closer Lou manages by the book, the worse things get.
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
The one in which the best possible players played
and at the front of the lineup. Not the one in which the guys with the lowest OBP start the game. Little stuff like that.

Yeah that's my thinking.
This bitching about the lineup everyday gets old quickly. Putting Soto different in the order…why isn’t Colvin in there, Castro needs to hit higher…no wait lower…sheesh. Lou certainly makes mistakes with it often but the team is just bad and the batting order sure won’t fix the horrible fielding.

Doing so insures that Lou’s derriere is covered.

Seriously
Part of me thinks he just continues to lead off with Theriot and not play Colvin because he has been criticized for doing it and he wants to show no one can tell him what to do.

I tend to agree with Nunya – go with the hot hand over slavish devotion to RH v. LHP.

2 Problems
1) What’s your definition of a hot hand? Nady is hitting .350 in June.
2) “Hot hand” is generally meaningless
Generally speaking, performance over a 5-8 game stretch is a poor predictor of performance in the next game.
I want Fontenot over Theriot just because I can't stand
Theriot these days.

As is 20-30 at bats in the month of June
Wouldn’t a bigger sample size – say, the season up until now – be a better predictor? Colvin has posted a .964 OPS in 102 at bats, while Nady has posted a .754 OPS in 92 at bats.
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
Still a small sample size
I am fine with putting Nady’s .300 career avg. vs. lefties in there against a tough lefty considering he has been hitting well lately.
I think really where we differ
is in your defense of Lou wanting to go with the trusted and proven to win today, vs. my preference for declaring the season over and wanting the youngsters to get lots of playing time. And this is not saying you’re wrong or I’m right – in fact most if not every big league skipper is looking to win today.
Maybe if the second half of June is just as dismal, we will see Colvin get more starts and perhaps even a starting assignment for Cashner.
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
From that perspective we agree
I think the season is over and would rather see Colvin. But the criticism I see here is a criticism over which lineup is the best to win today.
now I getcha ;-)
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
I think
Lou does need to play to win until July 1…unless there is a guy that needs more at bats or needs to be hidden a bit to be a better trade pawn

Which lefties do you want in there?
No thanks on Hill, Fontenot, Tracy or Dome. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Colvin in there just to let him try and hack it against a lefty, but Gonzalez has pretty good stuff, so I can understand waiting for a more soft-tossing lefty for that.
I suppose I just want Colvin put in RF and left there for the remainder of the season...
regardless of who is pitching. The way I see it, the season is a wash, so let the kid play…get some AB’s against LHP and get him ready for the full time RF job next year.

Agreed on that
But you know Lou doesn’t see the season that way and I don’t think we can reasonably expect him to at this point. Hopefully Hendry will just put everyone out of their misery, unload Dome, fire Lou and make it clear that the season is over.
could be one of two things
Lou thinking short term and still trying to win this year or they are trying to increase Nady’s trade value (or someone elses)

That's exactly my thinking.
They went nuts after getting swept in the playoffs and decided we needed lefties, haven’t been able to shake this philosophy of R vs L since. Those percentages are better overall, but you can easily go too far with it. Nady alone is a time bomb fielding…Dome would have been a much better choice for that. You need to have some restraint to see all the factors and not just he’s a righty and there’s a lefty pitching.

Even if this team plays
up to expectations, I have to question the reality of those expectations. We fell off badly last year and this year is a continuation of that. It’s not like a few things need tinkering. In my mind it’s blowup time and prepare for the future as best we can with our extreme payroll limitations.

I read today in the Trib
(can’t find a link) that Ramirez may not have a rehab assignment, or just a quick stint in A ball when he comes off the DL.
That strikes me as incredibly foolish. Why wouldn’t they have him rehab in Iowa, and actually show that he can at least hit that pitching before bringing him back.

Hmmm I hate to do this, but I doubt there is much either of them could do other than
tell Rami he should rehab in the minors. He’s under no obligation to do it at this point in his career. If you have a report that says Lou or Hendry didn’t want this, then I’d say these two clowns are wrong again. Otherwise they should be fired for other offenses…too numerous to list.

Baseball Prospectus Playoff Odds
I find it useful to check on the playoff odds report every few weeks to see how they project out the rest of the season. The current average record from their 10k simulations is 77-85, with a probability of making the playoffs at 4.6%. They’re lined up even with the Nationals for the 12th/13th best ending record in the league.
I think both estimates are a little low – I think 79-83 is more likely, with more like a 6% chance of pulling out a 84-78 type division-winning backdoor. After all, Baseball Prospectus’ model certainly doesn’t adjust for the Dustyness of the Reds and his inability to manage a young team for the long haul.
But it is certainly time for Jim Hendry to start selling, if he can find a viable buyer.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
if we are going to miss the playoffs
wouldnt it be best to try to not win as many games as possible? Could it be that this has been Jim and Lou’s plan all along so they can get a great draft pick for the 2011 draft?

But it would have helped to call out the players before now with Lou. He’s certainly tried making moves in the lineup, but he rarely sits them and as I say, should make it known he’s told them this shit isn’t acceptable. Show you care more about this team’s performance than the blowhard Stone.

they’ll make you laugh (at them), they’ll make you cry (tears of desperation)
Yeah I was gonna blow tonight off after watching last night...
Then I saw Demp was pitching and it was on WGN America. Sigh. I just don’t learn.

I've noticed a bad trend for the Cubs
We know they’ve been losing (a lot), but they specifically have been losing the first game of each series, including every series this month – Houston, Milwaukee, White Sox and Oakland. By my unofficial count, the Cubs are 8-14 in the first game of every series this season. That ain’t gonna get it done.
Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in!
If my math is correct the 2009 Cubs were 1 under for the season
as far as winning game one of each series. But that team at least was a .500 team.

It's 2011 time!
Go Cubs! I don’t care what you do this season anymore, because it’s 2011 time for me! I’m freeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Go Cubs!

Wheee
Isn’t it fun? Hell, even going to the ballpark is more relaxing. Just sit back, enjoy a few beers and hope the Cubs win. But if they dont? Who cares.
and weeeeeeeee!
Reminds me of this. NSFW. Randomly funny, but only if you have a high tolerance for annoying things.
But yeah, this season just got a lot more fun :)
