He has amazing bad reverse splits
Not sure why but:
vs RH: .209 / .329 / .327
vs LH: .253 / .387 / .400
He isn’t a LOOGY. Before the release the Marlins said he was going to be a long reliever. It is about all you can do with him. Not sure the Cubs really need him based on that.
Seems like someone who can hold RHP to a .656 OPS would have a place in a bullpen like ours
The splits may be nontraditional, but that shouldn’t be a problem if our manager could use him in the right spots (ie, not a LOOGY).
Who would he replace?
He won’t replace Marshall or Gorzo. He probably can match Grabow but Grabow is already signed to an expensive deal. I just don’t see much value in signing Pinto.
Howry?

He may not be a LOOGY but who will tell Lou?
Lou will see him throw from his left hand and know with absolute certainty that he has to pitch against people who swing the bat with their left hand. Lou does not need no stinking stats to tell him that.

Get him and send him to Des Moines.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
No real need
The 40 man is packed right now. While clearing off, say, David Patton, for him wouldn’t be the worst idea, I also don’t see what role he fulfills. We have enough lefties in the upper levels of the farm (one of my favorites is Luke Sommer now at AA). There’s enough righty options to ponder already. Just don’t see the need.
Patton is already off the 40 man
I believe when they acquired Howry, Patton’s time on the 40 man ended.

The Pinto is kaput? Ralph Nader isn't surprised.

confusing the Pinto with the Corvair?

Nah...more of a vague reference to the notoriously rear end collision exploding Pinto
That put Nader on the map when he wrote his book about it. Though the Corvair sure was a lemon.

Yougot that backwards
Nader’s book, Unsafe at Any Speed, was about the Chevy Corvair, not the Pinto

Very true. I had always thought the Pinto was part of that book. My editor sez we regret the error.
My mom had a Pinto for a short time and I was always told Nader led the effort to get rid of it which he did from Ralph Nader’s Center for Auto Safety. I see from Wiki he must have formed that after getting all the publicity from Unsafe and Any Speed.

this was why i went so crazy about the grabow signing
guys like him (replacement level relievers) become readily available almost all the time and because they’re readily available you shouldn’t pay a big premium or commit to a multi year deal to them
it was REALLY silly at the time and its been magnified by a season in which his results have actually been worse than his performance (the exact opposite of what had been happening to him before)

Sigh.
Given Grabow’s results to date, you are correct. I still hold out hope that Grabow, now (presumably) healthy, will produce at least the league-average pitching he has done in past years.
That’d be better than what he’s done so far, anyway.

sigh
my point all along is this shouldn’t have been judged based on the results, but the process.
Sure Grabow’s been really bad and i guess that strengthens my argument, but more relevant than his performance is the availability of other relievers like him
Even if Grabow was “good” this year by his standards, it wouldn’t have been a worthwhile contract, because it was very likely you could’ve found someone very similar for far cheaper and committed fewer years.
I care much more about a bad process than the short-term results of that decision. Over time a bad process is likely going to lead to far more bad results than good ones and that concept (in my opinion) is FAR more important than Grabow’s “results to date”

I'd take him..........
Over Grabow any day. 2.70 ERA, 16Ks and 9 BBs in 16 innings. Get’er done.
I'd bring him in, on a minor league deal.
Couldn’t be the worst idea. At the very least, give him a tryout and see what he’s got.
