Fukudome, Cubs Win Series From Athletics With Walkoff Single

The Cubs had only their third walkoff win of the season today (the other two were both in extra innings, April 26 vs. the Nationals and May 17 vs. the Rockies).

Kosuke Fukudome, the subject of trade rumors to the Red Sox posted earlier today, singled in the winning run with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and the Cubs beat the Athletics 3-2, winning a series for the first time in three weeks; the win boosted their interleague record to 5-4 and they have now won three of their last four games, allowing only four runs in the three victories. Let's for now forget about the A's nine-run outburst Tuesday night; in general, Cubs pitching has been outstanding for the last several days.

Thus, I'll skip the complaints about Lou's bizarre use of his bench today, his non-lifting of Randy Wells after he had thrown about 700 pitches in the seventh inning (an inning he likely shouldn't even have started; the Cubs now lead the major leagues in pitcher starts of over 120 pitches with seven) -- OK, so it wasn't that many, it only seemed like that many.

But I'm not going to mention any of that, because the complaint department is closed!

Star-divide

Actually, this was the biggest game of the year for the Cubs if they are to maintain any hopes of contending -- and they remained 6.5 games behind the Reds, who also won this afternoon. Randy Wells got past his first-inning problems and scattered three hits through the first four innings until he was touched for a run in the fifth. The Cubs had taken a 1-0 lead on Jeff Baker's HR in the first, but should have scored more -- they had the bases loaded with one out, only to see Alfonso Soriano strike out and Geovany Soto hit into a force play.

There it stayed until the seventh, when Wells should probably have been pulled; he was well over 100 pitches coming into that inning. Mark Ellis' HR gave the A's the lead, and two outs later, Wells walked Rajai Davis. Lou trudged out, and we were sure that Andrew Cashner would get the call to face Conor Jackson. Nope -- Lou trudged back. Wells finally got Jackson to pop up.

The Cubs manufactured a run in the eighth when Bob Geren did his Lou impression and mismanaged his lineup. Not used to NL double-switches, he called for closer Andrew Bailey to face Xavier Nady with the bases loaded and one out. Nady hit a sac fly to tie the game, and Bailey got out of the inning by striking out Soriano.

Bailey threw only ten pitches. Why Geren didn't double-switch, say, Jackson out of the game and bring in Ryan Sweeney -- who wound up batting for Bailey anyway -- is beyond me. Glad he did it, because that forced him to remove Bailey for Sweeney, who singled off Cashner -- yet another weird Lou move; why wasn't Carlos Marmol in the game in the ninth inning of a tie game at home? Marmol, finally summoned, got out of the jam.

Jerry Blevins replaced Bailey; the name may not sound familiar to you, but Blevins started in the Cubs farm system. He was a 17th-round pick in 2004, and traded to the A's in 2007 (with Rob Bowen) for Jason Kendall. He couldn't throw strikes today; he walked Geovany Soto on a couple of close pitches; after a sac and an intentional pass, he walked Ryan Theriot.

Think about that. That's only the fourth walk Theriot has drawn in 164 plate appearances since May 1. But it set up Fukudome's heroics and the win.

Weird managing on both sides; gorgeous sunshine, low humidity and a gentle breeze; and a Cubs victory. They still have a long way to go before any real "contention" can be discussed -- but this week has seen some of the best baseball all season. Keep up the good work this weekend vs. the Angels.

Via tweet from Carrie, the Cubs are close to signing first-round pick Hayden Simpson (pending a physical); he'll be at Wrigley Field this weekend from what I hear, and an official signing announcement could come on Saturday.

Finally, many of you may have seen this photo when I sent it via TwitPic earlier today, but I thought another look at the Ryan Theriot fishing bobblehead was called for, especially after his key walk in the ninth inning:

My take...

It looked to me that Fukudome’s game winning hit would have been a double play ball if the A’s had been playing the infield back.

But a win is a win.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

@Al Yellon

I find it strange that Theriot has his first bobblehead in something other than a Cubs uniform. The Cubs logo on the hat might as well be John Deere. He looks more like a Cubs fan than a Cub. Makes you wonder how committed he is to the Cubs, who have done so much for him. I also wonder if any other MLB players have a bobblehead of themselves in something other than the team uniform, as the first MLB bobblehead.

There’s been quiet talk out of the media that Mozalek ( I never seem to look up that spelling) is not willing to spend market value or even close to it on Pujols. So unless they shed salary next year, after signing Holliday I don’t see the formula working out…unless of course that’s all bs. Pujols will earn the largest contract for an OF, and St. Louis is going to have to hugely expand their payroll or dump salary to resign him next year (he has an option for 2011 which I think is a guaranteed lock they will pick up)

Why criticize the A’s manager for not double switching when Lou did the same thing with Marmol. He came in to get two outs in the ninth and then was removed for a PH in the bottom half. If the Cubs had not scored to win, Marmol was out of the game rather than being able to go back out for the 10th.

I gave up after Wells gave up that HR

in the 7th (? I think) and decided to be productive instead.

Figures I’d actually follow through on my “give up” during one of the only exciting wins of the year. This team is very annoying.

Also, its funny how when Lou’s dumb moves “work” (today, 2007, 2008) no one cries for his head. He’s been doing the same things that have irritated so many this year the WHOLE time he’s managed the Cubs. Meh. I guess even baseball fans are "monday morning quarterbacks) too.

Why did Lee let Ellis’ bunt roll foul? If the other team gives you an out, TAKE it! Why bunt with Castro to bring up Hill? Of course, why IBB Hill?

Great win, left for class

with the Cubs trailing 2-1 in the 7th based on what I’ve seen so far this season, I was confident they’d lose. Made my day.

A few complaints: the Cubs needed to get more than one run in the first. Soriano struck out on a nasty change-up that I really can’t fault him for. Soto, like an idiot (or Theriot) decided to swing at the first pitch and grounded out. It is exactly dumb stuff like this that puts him in Lou’s dog-house and puts Hill in the lineups more and more. Braden had been a little wild to that point, work the count, and get a good pitch to hit.

Kudos to Theriot for drawing a walk, but his other at-bats, especially the first two were quite poor. Castro led off the second with a hard hit double to the gap, was advanced to third by a decent Wells Sac-Bunt only to be stranded by the top of the order. Theriot saw what, 4 pitches, 3 strikes and a foul? Terrible at-bat, swung at a ball about 2 feet out of the zone for strike 3, and this is our leadoff man. The Cubs should’ve scored there second run in that inning and very well could have scored three or four by the second inning and maybe even chased Braden from the game.

But at least they won.

Thanks fellas,

now let’s sweep the Angels.

On a side note, I attended an Angels game in May while visiting L.A. I had a great time, beautiful ballpark, great amenities, very fan-friendly. Surprisingly inexpensive as well. Like the way they play the game too, they killed the A’s that night 12-5. But, they are very beatable and have been inconsistent this season.

I’m going to the game Sunday, going with my Dad for Father’s day, killer seats behind the plate, looking forward to it, hopefully the weather holds up. Last game I went to this season it was about 40 degrees and we lost to the Astros in extras after Demp and Marmol fell apart late, needless to say that one was not fun fun, also had to purchase a $50 dollar Cubs blanket because my girlfriend didn’t dress appropriately, despite my warnings.
