Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Some people love his work on WGN, Some people hate it, but Ronnie IS the voice of the Cubs. He will not be going to his home town this week and next year he will be cutting back on the travel he does with the team. I guess it is officially the time to start talking about his replacement in the booth. I just hope it is not his temporary replacement this week - Dave Otto. Keith Moreland anyone?

I like Otto however

Moreland is better. Love that light country accent. He really knows his stuff and can get it out over the airways quite well.

I imagine there’s gonna be a time when Ronnie has to call it a day. We all know that day has been coming for some time now. But we also know Ronnie just isn’t going to give up. If there’s a guy who personifies the “fight” against a dreaded disease, it’s Ronnie.

Just win the next game...!

I nominate Moreland

He has a look made for radio anyway. He’d be a natural.

I just hope Ronnie can hang on long enough to get that HOF induction. I’d say to see the Cubs win the Series, but……

He’s been living on borrowed time for a while as it is. When I was at my first Hundley camp one of the other campers, a doctor, told the story about how a flat-lined person was brought in to his E.R. and they were able to bring him back. It turned out to be Santo. The doctor said they didn’t know it was him until after he was stabilized, and had he known he might not have been able to work on him.

Santo’s a treasure, and we need to appreciate him as much as we can.

I like Moreland, too.

He’d be a good choice. Good analyst, popular former Cub, meshed well with Pat when he filled in.

Agreed on Moreland

Although he’s got a pretty sweet gig right now, color man for Texas football and baseball.

I love what Ron Santo represents as a player and as a human being, but I cannot stand listening to him on the radio any longer.

I forgot....

….. keep enough Crown Royal on hand so Moreland will be happy. My goodness, but that guy can put that way when he’s in the mood. :)

I think Pat might actually do a great job all by himself.

And I don’t mean that as a knock on Ronnie (I ♥ Ronnie) even thought it has been mainly those times where Ronnie goes quiet that gives me the idea. Also, IIRC he did do a show once by himself and I thought he did a wonderful job.

The problem is...

… if that happened, we’d probably be subjected to even more of JUDD SIROTT!!!!

That's a scary thought.

And I’m not a fan of Otto although it can be funny when Pat’s jokes go right over his head. So far out of the choices given Moreland is by far the best. Any chance we can get Cory back from Milwaukee? :)

A couple other good choices, if the Cubs could get them

Bob Dernier

Eric Karros

A big yes on Karros.

One of my favorite Cubs, and a darn good broadcaster.

Karros...

…would be my first choice as well.

If Brenley goes back to managing, you could toss him in the TV booth as well.

Moreland, Dernier or Karros would be great

I like all three of them as broadcasters. And there is no doubt Karros loves the Cubs, even though he only spent one season in Chicago.

You don't know pain

Until you hear a Judd Sirott solo 5th inning because Ron couldn’t make the trip

by Danwood on Jun 21, 2010 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

That's not what I said.

If you think that I feel Santo is a good announcer, than you didn’t even pay attention to this fanshot.

I second

the Keith Moreland nomination. I love Ronnie but I don’t know how he keeps it up with all of his health issues. i will definitely be sorry to see him go.

by iowacubfan69 on Jun 21, 2010 8:37 AM CDT reply actions

Moreland all the way...

But he doews U of Texas radio (which is why he is so good on the radio), so he may be torn.

No Otto. No Judd.

The time is right...

…to figure out the most graceful exit as possible for Santo. I have great respect for what he did on the field for as long as he did, and that is part of the reason it is so painful for me to listen to him fumble around as a color man.

At times, I vasilate between understanding why he is still in the booth at his age and condition, to really being embarrassed for the guy at times.

I heard him once say it is better for his health to be in the booth.

IIRC, he said that when he was at home he was drinking too much wine.

by katie casey on Jun 21, 2010 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

I highly doubt...

…being with the team has stopped him from drinking wine. In fact, it may be the opposite.

yeah, just like Ken Griffey Jr thought he could still help the team

Ronnie is the guy who doesn’t know when to quit in the flesh. It’s LOOOOONG past time for him to retire.

by HuskerCorner on Jun 21, 2010 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

There comes a time for everyone...

…and I think Harry stuck around a little too long as well. Sometimes these folks need a little help recognizing when it gets to the point of no return.

Also, I’m not sure Santo being with the club is that great for his health. I have heard from someone who has first hand knowledge, he doesn’t take the greatest care of himself as someone with diabetes should.

by MPH73 on Jun 22, 2010 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

The funny thing is, for a while, he was almost competent

I’d say from about 1992, when he started getting comfortable and they were back to a two-man booth, up until 2004 or so. He was never a good announcer, but he was much better than the cartoon character that he has become.

I understand what you mean – I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ron Santo the baseball player, and more importantly, Ron Santo the person for all he’s gone through and the attitude he’s gone through it with.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 21, 2010 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I just think...

…it’s time someone help him understand it’s time to move on.

This is different, but I remember when Willie Mays stuck around for 2-3 years longer than he should have and it was pretty ugly.

Here comes Mark Grace

I’m telling you, upon hearing this that weasel will be all OVER this. PHX was a way for him to break into the biz.

Mark my words. If Ronnie leaves, I guarantee Grace will make sure he’s considered for any Cubs job opening. He has done very minimal PBP, so he could be considered adequate and the 1-inning-fill-in would longer be needed.

Grace stinks, but tatent is not a prerequisite for the gig.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jun 21, 2010 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

I hope you're wrong.

Because, as you note, Grace is a horrific broadcaster.

by Al Yellon on Jun 21, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes he is.

We don’t need to replace Ron with someone almost as bad.

by HuskerCorner on Jun 21, 2010 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't share the same loathing for Grace as others seem to here

..but I don’t think you have to worry about Grace taking over for Santo. His ego is to big for radio.

Now if Brenly gets the itch to manage again, then you can start worrying again.

Double ugh.

Len Kasper with Grace? I like Len, but that would be unlistenable.

by Al Yellon on Jun 21, 2010 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Foot in the door, so to speak.

Then, he plots his way to the TV booth. I put nothing past this weasel. Any gig in Chicago is better than PHX, considering how ‘loved’ he is with this fan base.

And, many still do admire him……

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jun 21, 2010 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I would worry about that. I do think you're right Gracie wouldn't try radio.

And I have to hope management knows most fans do not like him broadcasting. His biased rants about the Cubs would seem to make that evident to them. And besides, he’s just not good at it.

Moreland Please

Does a very nice job and is a good complement to Pat. I am glad to hear that Ron is cutting back. Both for his health and our ears. I like that we will still have him around at times, but at this point he is getting tough to handle for 162 games a year.

by JSB on Jun 21, 2010 7:46 PM CDT reply actions

He has long not broadcast 162 games, but your point is taken.

Keith Moreland does a good job when he fills in...

and I think Eric Karros would also be a good choice. Frankly, I think Todd Hollandsworth could do a good job given the the opportunity. I don’t mind Dave Otto, but I doubt many would want him full-time.

Forgot about Hollandsworth.

Good call. He does a fine job with Gail Fischer on the Comcast pre-and-post shows.

I like him...he makes me laugh even when there is nothing to laugh about

I mostly listen to Len and Bob, but occasionally I’ll turn the radio on and get my Pat and Ron fix.
