OT -- Best 80s movie song
I have had "Ready or Not" from the Zapped soundtrack in my head for the last two hours and I can't find it on You Tube. I found "Got to Believe in Magic," though. I'd forgotten how hot the brunette from Zapped was.
Then I thought about the great songs. I find "Win in the End" from Teen Wolf far superior to "You're the Best" from Karate Kid. I rewatched the fight montage from Karate Kid and you realize just how much they were protecting Ralph Macchio, who couldn't kick his way through rice paper. (Plus, by Karate Kid III, he was drawing Social Security and had the biggest ass this side of Jennifer Lopez)
Then I realized -- my fellow BCBers, on an off-day, might like to share my nostalgia and joy over 80s movie soundtracks. So, TO THE POLLS!

It's patently unfair you don't allow us to pick multiple options, Worf.
Is that not possible with this blog for polls?

Caddyshack
I’m all right, with the dancing gopher, at least one of the best of the 80s.
I don't think of Caddyshack as an 80s movie
Yes, it came out in 1981, but that is pure 70s.

How about
Weird Science then, it almost typifies the 80s electronic music scene.
Weird Science is a typical 80s movie

Also, his son looks exactly like Demi Moore. And one guy drinks motor oil before a match — and rather than making him sick or killing him, it makes him STRONGER.

I'm apalled
at the fact people are bad mouthing Over the Top. The real song in that flick is Meet Me Half Way by Kenny Loggins.
Any time you get a guy in stained jeans, long haulin’ Brut, a guy named Smasher, a fat man called Canadian Strong Man Carl Adams, Terry Funk, and a Father in Son doing exhausting workouts on the ram bar of a truck you have a winner.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

Exactly... why no more music montages in which the protagonists fix up an old house?
They have to get the place ready for the big battle of the bands before old man Baxter Carruthers tears down the old neighborhood to build a luxury condo development! And his son is such a dick!
Also there’s a monkey who works at the bikini store.
I actually wrote a script treatment for a movie exactly like this when I was in lawschool. Then “Wet Hot American Summer” came out and kind of took the wind out of my sails.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Sorry to hear about your script treatment.
Val Kilmer pulled that likeable guy sarcasm off pretty well. I doubt you could sell a movie with the current era now. Many fave scenes in it like nerds getting lucky (without the bullcrap of making speeches like Revenge of the Nerds)…love the underdog winning out. A laserbeam heating up popcorn to pour out of the house was inspired…with scenes of them tobagganing through the halls it was the perfect college / high school movie. You’d only get an American Pie inferior clone now…bad movie where the biggest upside is being unrated on DVD.

On the plus side, it was pretty horrible.
We mostly just spent our downtime (and as a 3rd year law student, there’s a lot of that) brainstorming 80’s movie cliches and trying to fit them into one big storyline.
Chimpanzee? Check.
A chimpanzee who works in a Bikini store? Check.
Two male protagonists, one of whom is the funny “ladies man” (think Andrew McCarthy), who finds his true love at the end (and she was there all along, but wearing glasses so you didn’t know she was hot!) — the other of whom is the “straightlaced man” (think John Cusack or Jon Silverman), devoted to his girlfriend, but they have lots of misunderstandings (this isn’t what it looks like!!) but they wind up together in the end? Check.
Run-down old house? Check.
Musical montage for fixing old house up? Check.
Someone gets paint spilled on them during that montage? Check.
The monkey pulls some kind of monkeyshines during the montage? Check.
Crooked developer who wants to buy the neighborhood and run all of the “townies” out for his expensive development? Check.
Spoiled son of crooked developer (wearing sweater tied around his neck) who makes a move on the aforementioned girlfriend in the aftermath of one of the aforementioned misunderstandings? Check.
Fancy dress party around the rich developer’s pool, where our protagonists somehow wind up working catering, and someone falls on a long table and a bunch of people get shoved into the pool and everything on the table shoots into the air and into the pool including the WHOLE GIANT CAKE? Check.
The chimpanzee somehow exposes the spoiled son’s plot and lets the girlfriend see that it WAS really a misunderstanding and it wasn’t “what it looked like” with her boyfriend and that blonde? Check.
Battle of the Bands fundraiser at the end, which the protagonists win after beating the developer’s son’s band? Check.
(During the Battle, the spoiled son’s flunkies pull the power out on our heroes, and they basically invent “MTV Unplugged” with an acoustic version of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” that expresses the “straightlaced guy”s feelings so well it wins the girlfriend back, and so moves the flunkies that they put the power back in, and our heroes proceed to blow the roof off the joint with pyrotechnics and a rocking Huey Lewis-style number.
Then, at the end after the good guys won the prize and saved the day, their wacky third friend who runs the bikini store pulls up in a classic car convertible with his chimpanzee, and the two protagonists and their girlfriends jump in, and they drive off into the sunset while Journey plays “Any Way You Want It” (or a similar song if that’s too expensive or derivative of Caddyshack)!
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I liked those things. Cliched but amusing in a light hearted manner.
At least they were not meant to perpetuate hateful kinds of jokes. Ski School made me laugh then, moronic cult movie with little talent or acting in it that just was being good at being stupid. I guess you covered it a little, but that movie sure had a common theme in movies…winning some idiot contest/sporting event to have your “gang” be accepted and/or bankrupt the mean owners and bullies. A lot of 80’s R rated movies were based on that.

Who can ever forget the 1984 season and WGN’s catch song for the Cubs,

Of course, this season could be wrapped up in “girl gone bad”, and “I’ll wait” for the fans.

Not really one song but
the music for Sixteen Candles was pretty close to perfect. “Turning Japanese”, “True”, “Young Americans” and who can forget “Kajagoogoo”?
I am an American aquarium drinker...
John Hughes
really had a knack (no pun intended) for that.
The song “Pretty in Pink” inspired the movie by the same name. Originally, the song was released in 1981 only to be re-released in 1986 for the movie. Hughes was, apparently, a huge Psych Furs fan.

Loved the Furs back in ’81. But “Pretty in Pink” is my all-time most loathed movie. The horrible remix of the title song is just one reason that movie is so awful.

TALKING HEADS!!!!!
I love these guys. Really, the band itself could’ve been an 80’s movie:
Oddball hero? Check. We’ve got David Byrne. I dare you to find an odder hero.
Distinctive fashion? We put David Byrne in a giant suit.
Focus on Technology? Yes! Have you heard all the synthesizers? Not to mention the subject matter of like half the lyrics.
Hey, they’ve even got that desperate attempt at a sequel! Remember “The Heads”? Same band minus one key band member!
When Talking Heads played on the jukebox at a bar a friend and I were in, my buddy stopped mid-sentence to observe, “this didn’t have to happen. What if David Byrne had been good at soccer or something? Thank God he wasn’t.”

If I were to make my choice for "Song Most Full Of Cheese...And Win!"
it would probably have to be “I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man)” by Kenny Loggins from “Footloose.”
Ren McCormack is a loner and a rebel who just doesn’t fit in, and he’s got some emotions to work out. Luckily, he has a professional dance double and a big helping of Loggins to help him. Completely laughable yet somehow engaging movie history ensues.

Add to that "Let's hear for the boy"

“Let’s Go Crazy” was great, and I am sure a lot of people like “Purple Rain” too…at least for awhile. The Time had it goin’ on for sure. And by the way Josh, Repo Man was fantastic and I’d think a lot of songs here aren’t original to the movie. Iggy Pop made a good song…Circle Jerks when the sh*t hits the fan…and who could forget Pablo Picasso was an a$$hole.

My only problem
is that while I liked the version of Pablo Picasso in Repo Man, the original Modern Lovers version is one of my favorite songs of all time. In fact, that whole album is probably my favorite album of all time.
“Roadrunner, roadrunner, going a thousand miles an hour. Gonna drive past the Stop-n-Shop. WITH THE RADIO ON!”
“That’s a Girl—friend. That’s a G-I-R-L-F-R-E-N. That’s a Girlfriend . . .”
“When you get out of the hospital, let me back into you life.”
“I called this number three times already but I, I got scared, I put it back in place. I put the phone back in place.”
And of course, the aforementioned Pablo Picasso line.
Of course, that album was recorded in 1971-2 and not released until 1976. It was still almost a decade ahead of its time. Just brilliant.

+1 Josh on the Modern Lovers album - although I'm Straight wasn't on the original vinyl -- one of my top 5 albums
when I saw all the pop rubbish cited, I shook my head and thought no one would remember the Repo Man movie, let alone the soundtrack.
Favorite line from the movie: “….I blame society…”
My brother and I still get together once in awhile to hoist a few, watch the movie
and laugh. Sing the 7up song, everything is generic in the stores, the book dianetics falling out, and famously, as the puddle of beer is found after Otto pours it on the ground…who pissed the floor again?

That's true
but since the whole thing wasn’t really put together by the band and was just thrown together by someone (Matthew “King” Kaufman according to Wikipedia) with the tapes that were available, what was on the original vinyl was pretty arbitrary. So I don’t have a problem including “I’m Straight.”

2 – THE TERMINATOR—Brad Fiedel, Terminator Theme. Oh. My. God. How. Could. You. Forget. This.
3 – FULL METAL JACKET—The Rolling Stones, Paint It Black. The closing credits song. This is (1) power, (2) rock, (3) anthem. And one of the greatest movies of all time.
4 – INDIANA JONES & THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK—John Williams, Main Theme. A necessity for any 80s movie music discussion.
5 – THE BREAKFAST CLUB—Simple Minds, Don’t You (Forget About Me). Yup, you forgot this one, Broseph.

Two choices for me:
The popular one: “Don’t You Forget About Me” from “The Breakfast Club”
The obscure one: “Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young” from a basically forgotten but very good film, “Streets of Fire”.
Many good ones above
Another angle:
Heavy Metal (Hagar) – Movie of the same name.
Hey You – The Wall – Floyd (80s for the movie)
Not sure if it was mentioned above but.. Axel F – Beverly Hills Cop.
There goes one over the fence...a Tru-Link fence.
An often forgotten gem:
“The Boys Are Back In Town” by the Bus Boys, from “48 Hrs.”

Hard to be believe it could only get art-house distribution, but there really weren’t any satires of pop culture/rock music/youth culture given the big budget Hollywood treatment until AFTER this movie was so successful.

I can't believe I had forgotten this one:
“Teenage Suicide (Don’t Do It)” by Big Fun from “Heathers.”
It’s got it all—tongue-in-cheek humor, new wave-style synth, computer beats and hokey guitar, and it’s absolutely central to the plot. Not to mention it’s by a band that was invented solely for the film. How very.
"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.
Like totally forgot the song "I melt with you" - Valley Girl soundtrack. As if.
Cracks me up we have two generations who think they invented the term totally… or I’m so anything. From Clueless to now, you got it from the Valley Girl generation baby. Course they did morph so sure to soooooooo over that. Gag me with a fork!

Some 80's news...Tiffany and Debbie Gibson are gonna be catfighting on Syfy in "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid"
Not making this up…apparently both have played bit parts in a previous monster flick.
Here’s a recent pic of Tiffany who aged well to me….

and now Debbie Gibson

Tiffany should go back in time and shoot whoever decided the course of her career
That girl had some serious pipes, and they turned her into a mall singer.
I had both of their Playboy issues.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
I was surprised to find pictures of both issues readily available to print...censored or ones
Strategically posed. Yeah, they’re both smokin’ and realize where money is to be made for them. Tiffany actually had two minor dance hits in the last few years. “Deborah” seems to have figured out worrying about her first name is less profitable than posing for pictures.

I know Gibson did some Broadway work
Wikipedia reveals that her and Tiffany are going to star in a SyFy movie “Mega Python vs. Gataroid”
I miss the 80s.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
That's what I had in the title of my post over Tiffany!
hmmm…methinks you like redheads too.

"Cheer Down" from Lethal Weapon II
An “almost Wilbury” song – written by George Harrison and Tom Petty, produced by George Harrison and Jeff Lynne, and sung by George Harrison.
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
