The Vuvuzela: Was It At Baseball Parks Decades Ago?
In Keith Olbermann's MLBlog, he writes that he remembers hearing the vuvuzela -- or something that looked and sounded a lot like it -- at Yankee Stadium in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
I remember a similar plastic horn being sold at Wrigley Field in that era. There is a comment in Olbermann's post saying the same thing, and others mentioning that these horns were available at Tiger Stadium and Shea Stadium.
Do any of the rest of you remember horns like this at Wrigley? I do.

Besides the Cubs have had a WooWooZela for some time now.

Know what's even more despicable (I love that word BTW)?
That some people actually enjoy it and encourage him! He was walking around waving his silver Michael Jackson glove at a couple games last week. When I yelled “somebody shut him up!” the people around me looked at me like I was the one that was nuts. There was even a family asking him to pose for pictures with their little boy-he was only around three. I just don’t get it.

I know that but him NOT being

I came home from that game and couldn’t wait to cue up the DVR only to find there was virtually nothing covered about my Blackhawks there with the Stanley Cup. I read some station in France figured out how to filter the vuvuzela noise out of the broadcast
maybe they can do the same for woo noise?

They've been testing this on German TV too
The theory is simple but the filtering causes everything else to sound really weird.
"A waist is a terrible thing to mind." - Terry 'Fat Tub of Goo' Forster
Simple
It’s about notching out the frequencies where the sound lives. Those are also the frequencies where a lot of the other ambient sound is found.
Not only that, but these are frequencies which contain a large amount of the sound information in the spoken word.

I was totally serious
I’m a big time Beatles fan, and have always said George’s songwriting became as good as John’s and Paul’s by the time of the White Album. So it did my heart good seeing him regain the acclaim he deserved with Cloud Nine and the Wilburys.
Though I must say I think “Brainwashed” is his best solo album.
I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.
Good to hear
My favorite George album, besides of course All Things Must Pass (one of the all-time best by anyone), is his self-titled effort from 1979, with great songs like “Blow Away,” “Faster,” “Love Comes to Everyone” and “Your Love is Forever.” I had it almost from the time it came out and it’s very nostalgic to hear now. Great video to “Blow Away” is available on YouTube.
"They found a delivery in my flaw." - Dan Quisenberry
Agreed mah boy.
Lennon and McCartney were songwriting way before George was. I don’t think George began songwriting until The Beatles were already in the Cavern Club, or maybe when they began working in the studio. Lennon says his favorite Harrison song was “Within you Without you” which is one of the best on Sgt. Pepper, but I think George’s best song is “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
The Traveling Wilburys were solid too.
I liked the “new” Genesis that emerged in the 1980s, led by Phil Collins.
I also enjoyed the solo efforts of Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton throughout the decade.
"You've got to get your damn shirts rolled up and go out and kick somebody's ass. That's what you've got to do. Period." -- Lou Piniella
GEORGE HARRISON IS FREAKING AMAZING.
John Lennon always kind of looked down on George. Lennon used to refer to George as “that kid.” George said the first time him and Lennon really connected was when they took LSD.
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." John Lennon
I've been listening to "Concert for George"
a lot lately. Clapton singing “Beware of Darkness”, the late great Billy Preston singing on “Isn’t it a Pity”, Jeff Lynne singing “Handle with Care” from the Traveling Wilbury days, Petty singing “I need you”. IMHO the best tribute concert ever. It’s also a reminder what an unbelievable songwriter Harrison was.

Yes, absolutely.
Growing up in Detroit in the 70s, I saw them at Tiger Stadium a lot. They might have sold them there. They were invariably orange. I’m sure we had one around the house.
I remember the horns being sold at Wrigley—late 60’s era. One of the kids I went to Y camp with bought one at a game, but he couldn’t get it to make any noise. He thought you could just blow in it and sound would come out.
10-20 of those is just a minor annoyance at a game. Background noise.
I seem to remember a similar horn available
at Soldier Field in the 60s at the “Mayor Daley Chicago High School Championship” football game.
I may have had one, and that’s the first thing i thought of when I saw this Vuvuzela. However, this sounded nothing like what we are hearing. I guess that’s what happend when everybody has one of the damn horns, not a bunch of 12-year-old kids.

Making a noisy nuisance.
I remember having one of these in blue plastic in the late 60s or early 70s. As I recall, my brother and I talked our parents into buying one at the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, probably at the International Amphitheater. It was a decision they regretted.
Comisky..circa 61
I remember my dad taking me and a friend to see a Sox game in 61 or 62. He bought us both one of these blue horns about 2 blocks from the park. They were confiscated at the gate! And that act of fascism turned me into a lifelong Cub fan. Oh, if they’d only let us in with our horns…life might have been sooo different.
Yeah, I've often wondered how my life would have turned out if my father who is only mildly
a Cubs fan hadn’t turned on the transistor radio out working with me. It sure is strange to me that those noisemakers that were around then are now things people actually want. Being a fan sure has changed.

Unrelated - death of a 92-year old Cubs fan
I know this isn’t related to the post, but I just had to say that my wife’s 92-year old uncle died today. He was born in 1918 and grew up in Western Illinois, following the Cubs pretty much his whole life. Although they played in several World Series in his lifetime (not sure he attended any games), he never got to see them win a World Series, which is a shame. He was still lucid even this spring, when I asked him what he thought of this year’s Cub team. He didn’t think they had much going for them, he told me. He was blind, so listening to the Cubs on the radio was one of the things that kept him going.
"They found a delivery in my flaw." - Dan Quisenberry
Very sorry for your loss.
Sounds like an amazing man. When my grandfather died, he had volunteered to get in WWI in the calvary and had WGN on invariably so he could watch the Cubs everyday. I think there are a lot of fans out there that wouldn’t be Cub fans if they weren’t able to see every game on WGN so much. Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau sure also did that for me. I loved hearing them together…made some bad teams fun to listen to and renew that hope every spring only to have it dashed. I remember well hearing Vince say quite a few summers…with this victory we might have something…we don’t need a winning streak as much as winning 2 out of 3 repeated a long time. Sigh.

Also, my father-in-law is 75, grew up in Chicago, still lives here, and saw the Cubs play in the 1945 World Series, but obviously never saw them win one,
My grandfather, who was born in Europe in 1912 but moved to Rockford in around 1920, followed the Cubs his entire life until he died at age 86 in 1999, never having seen the Cubs win a Series. He took me to many Cub games when I was a kid.
My sister-in-law’s father, who’s almost 80 and attended the 1945 World Series at Wrigley (the Cubs won the game he was at), is also getting up there. I don’t think he expects to see them win in his lifetime.
Meanwhile, I’m 39 and I’ve seen 9 Chicago championship teams in my lifetime (6 Bulls, one Bears, one Sox and one Hawks). Let’s hope I see the Cubs win a championship in my lifetime. I still (hopefully) have plenty of time to wait.

Yeah – it was easier to make yourself heard back then with only 3k around. I’ve been going to Wrigley since 1975. I feel like I first saw (heard) him there in the early 80s.

Yup, the UC was loud (Chicago Stadium was even louder in the 80’s/90’s) and no score-board enticing needed.
But I agree with you on the issue. Those show up, either we get rid of those or I don’t show up. I don’t need that kind of noise in my ear.

my thought on Jake Fox
I predict Fox will be DFA’d/waived again by Balt soon, and then sent to the minors. He is worthy of a September callup as a 3rd catcher, but that is really about it. Last week against a lefty, Cubs started all the RH hitters, and had no RH hitters on the bench. They used Zambrano to pinch hit. If it was September, Fox would have been a better choice.

and of course 2000 #2 draft pick Luis Montanez would make the 7th ex Cub on Balt roster (except Luis never made it to the Cubs)
Moe Drabowsky and Steve Stone
Those were two ex-Cubs that went to the Orioles that helped them win AL pennants back in the ancient times of 1966 and 1970 for Drabowsky and 1979 for Steve Stone. The ex-Cubs that the Orioles get now are just plain trash.

VuVus and HWSNBN
We brought home Vuvus in mid-late 70s from a Sting game. Those horns are seriously the only Sting memory I have.
Also, I have a picture at home of myself with HWSNBN outside the bleachers, I think before the non-game on 8/8/88. At the time, I felt like he was an institution, but not considered an annoyance.
I can’t help but wonder if his eventual end of tenure at the park will be at all like when Harry left us. Honestly, I could NOT stand to listen to his play by play at the end. He would have been fine as a color guy, but I would usually mute the TV and turn on the radio for innings 1-3 and 7-9, just so that the sound I heard would have some relevance to the plays on the field. Once he was gone, all that bad broadcasting was forgotten, and I would have been more than happy to have him back!
The ONLY Sting memory you have?
Surely you still remember Karl-Heinz Granitza—Arno Steffenhagen—Pato Margertic and the beating they administered to the New York Cosmos at Wrigley in the “greatest game in the history of No rtah American Soccer” :c-)
"He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any man I know. " Abraham Lincoln
Karl-Heinz Granitza
That name’s familiar … but none of the rest is …
Wait a second … were they playing at Wrigley at the time?
Yes, I was a kid then and they were the first winning team Chicago had at that time
everybody else sucked. I think soccer is boring but they were a winner!! I remember those guys plus their coach, Willy Roy, and a couple guys like Charlie Faikus and Franz Mathieu.
"Any player who gets the opportunity to play at Wrigley should welcome it"
It was very cool seeing the headline on the Trib from it.
I had the NASL poster on my wall though I wasn’t a soccer fan nor saw any of their games. That was a fun league at the time though…made me interested in them.

I was the only one in my family who stayed up to watch it and cheered when it ended, waking everyone up. They came out of their rooms and wondered what the heck was going on. I said Chicago had a champion!! They answered, “Soccer? Are you kidding? Go to bed.”

Miss Indoor Soccer
The MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) was fun. The NASL also had indoor soccer. The Kansas City Comets had the most financially successful team in the MISL. I saw some Memphis Americans games. That was an ironic name because very few of the players came from the United States. They had some players from South America, so I suppose you could have called them Americans. I haven’t seen an indoor soccer game since 1990, when the Memphis Rogues folded in the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA).
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
It was still the Sting though and...
a far superior game to the outdoor game here in America. Yup, it had a little hockey feel though no intentional hard hitting but it was really a quick pace. That sells, if done right.
Scoring is where it’s at in America. It’s why each and every major league sport have gone the way of increased offence the past few decades via rule changes & other attributes.
MISL/NASL simply didn’t market this well enough. I really thought they were on to something there.
Arena football had horrible management for a few years and cost successful teams like the Rush the 2009 season. They’re back now, they have to re-capture the momentum they were building. Down 35-14 in 2Q this past Saturday, they rallied to win 63-56. That’s offence! In a football game nonetheless.
Just win the next game...!

I think I got it as a booby prize at a carnival.
"Any player who gets the opportunity to play at Wrigley should welcome it"
I had one too
I’m pretty sure I got it at a football, not baseball game
But, it was significantly different in sound. It had a larger “throat” and made a deeper horn sound, unlike the higher pitched buzzing sound that these soccer fans make.
Yap I think most of those during that time did. They weren't nearly as loud or annoying.

Now I know it pains some of you to read anything by Keith Olbermann and you’ll never click on that link, so here it is:
I love the word vuvuzela. It sounds made up and real:
“Bar none, the best Dominican middle infield prospect of the 70’s was Chico Vuvuzela.”
“Barstow? Hell, you’re really lost aren’t you? You’re in Vuvuzela.”
“I can’t lift heavy things and I gotta wear this truss for 3 months. Doc said I tore my vuvuzela and insurance won’t cover surgery.”
“Vuvuzela!” “Bless you.”
“Scalpel….forceps….suction….vuvuzela…”
“I had a Chevy Vuvuzela back in the 80’s with bucket seats, a hatchback and a bitchin’ Pioneer cassette deck. Burned oil like you wouldn’t believe but it was a real classy ride.”
“I had a bad case of vuvuzela when I was in the Army. The Dr. gave me a shot and it got better in a few weeks. I had to go talk with the Chaplain about how I got it, and that sucked.”
“Is that a vuvuzela in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?”

At my local AAA team they have something similar.
But the fans who blow them only make short bwats on them, not long constant droning like the vuvuzelas. Also they’re in a different pitch than the vuvus; A flat instead of B flat.
Not to mention I think they’re only 5 or 6 of them at once, instead of a whole stadium full. Thank God.
