Strasburg - All-Star or Not?
Yes, I know he lost last night, but he gave up one run and struck out 9. He is 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA, an 8 to 1 K/BB ratio and .95 WHIP.
I also know there was a thread about this in the FanShots, but that had more to do with mocking Joe Morgan, which is valuable work, but I thought the question deserved its own forum.
I say All-Star.
If you view the All-Star Game as an exhibition for the fans, which I do, then this is a no-brainer. He is by far the biggest thing to come up in years and he's already one of the top 10 household names in baseball. Put him in and the ratings go up.
If you view the All-Star Game as a real game, which i don't, then this still is a no-brainer. He has dominant, filthy stuff. There aren't 12 NL pitchers better than him or 12 other pitchers you'd want to help you win the game.
Someone should slap Bud awake, change his diaper and tell him to invoke commissioner's priviledge and put the man in the All-Star Game. I'll gladly give up the Cubs' spot on the team, if that helps.

Too early to tell.
Let’s see if he’s still there after three more starts, which would be about the time for ASG selection. My guess is that the answer is going to be “yes”.

I agree.
It’s about the body of work you put out. Yes, he’s had three great starts. But he’s being compared to pitchers who’ve had, what, twelve starts? It’s challenging (to say the least) to call someone an All-Star when his body of work is so limited, no matter how talented the player may be. It’s not quite apples to apples.
My guess is...
… that after seven starts (which would be the case by the time selection comes), if he’s still this dominant, Charlie Manuel will want him on his pitching staff.
That said, depending on when his last start before the ASB falls, he might not be eligible to pitch anyway. We’ll see.

I was thinkin' about this last night...
…and my gut reaction is, “Yes, let him in.” The All-Star Game is basically a popularity contest anyway – it’s about the “stars” of baseball, not necessarily the best players (though, barring injury, he certainly appears well on his way to becoming one of those). And Strasburg is already a huge star. So let him play.

The point of the All-Star Game is to showcase stars
The whole reason behind demanding that each team get a rep is so that talented players on teams not in the Boston-NY axis get at least one night of publicity.
Strasburg is the best young star to come along since Ichiro and the best young pitcher to come along since Fernando.
Put him in the All-Star game.

The whole Boston-NY Axis is due to the press and Hype of the area
This continues because of networks like ESPN. ESPN and others are HYPING Strasburg. Based on his early results he will become an All-Star. I just don’t think he has done enough to actually be an All-Star
As opposed to who?
Name me 12 pitchers that you think would be better, with home field on the line, than Strasburg.
Name me 12 pitchers that would get the ratings over Strasburg.

I don't think he deserves to be an all star either. He's only pitched three games, Worf.
Where is it written that a manager should pick the pitcher that will generate the most viewers? The fans already vote in those they want.

I'm telling you I don't think him pitching 3 or even 4 games merits him being there.
This is something to worry about when we get closer to the AS game. Not after 3 starts. I think he will earn it too, just that he hasn’t after 3 games.

Jimenez – Col
Garcia – STL
Johnson – FLA
Cain – SF

Lincecum – SF
Hudson – ATL

All 12 of them would be better?

It's Funny
That you’d use two stupid benchmarks like ERA & WHIP to make the argument that Ryan Webb is more deserving than Strasburg then have another post like this where all the pitchers you list don’t measure up to Strasburg’s numbers.
Ubaldo – better ERA, worse WHIP
Garcia – worse ERA & WHIP
Johnson – worse ERA & WHIP
Cain – worse ERA & WHIP
Wainwright – worse ERA & WHIP
Halladay – worse ERA & WHIP
Carpenter – worse ERA & WHIP
Lincecum – worse ERA & WHIP
Hudson – worse ERA & WHIP
Capps – worse ERA & WHIP
Wilson – worse ERA & WHIP
Bell – worse ERA & WHIP
As of RIGHT NOW, only Ubaldo, Lincecum, Halladay, Wainwright and Johnson can be argued as being better pitchers. Capps, Wilson, Bell, Hudson, Cain and Garcia aren’t even close to being as good. Carpenter may be but his heath history makes me give the edge to SS.
I could spend the rest of the afternoon swatting down the rest of your crazy posts in this and the other thread but I value my time much more than that. You’re just another troll who has some sort of irrational hatred for Strasburg.
BTW, there aren’t more than 2 or 3 pitchers in the AL that I’d rather have on my staff than Strasburg. Cliff Lee, Greinke and Hughes and that’s it.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Look I admit that I am not looking at all of the stats but
My point with the other pitchers is that they have a larger sample size in the majors than Strasburg. I just feel it is too early to put him up over those pitchers.
My point with Webb (and it might be a stretch) is that if you are going to use the smaller sample size of 25 innings then Webb actually had better numbers than SS (except for strikeouts)
I am not a hater of SS. I am a believer of earning your spot and while I think he is a great pitcher, he has not earned a spot yet.
You're better off just ignoring him

By the way, if we just look at June/July Stats for Strasburg
Why don’t we choose All All-Stars that way? Just take the Hottest players of the month or week and let them play.
If we just look at 1st half numbers, does that mean that Jason Marquis should have been in the All-Star games in 2007 and 2008?
Worf? Al?
The Strasburg hype, I believe, is justified.
However, I’m not anointing him an All-Star after four starts.
Let’s see how he does with three more first.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
What else would you look at besides first-half numbers???
Because if you are going back further, then you are making a decision based on what players did in the past, which means you’re basing it on popularity and stardom and fame.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Why does voting start so early then?
Let’s stop pretending our votes are so sacred as to not be cast before we have the complete picture of a player’s first half. This is an exhibition game, no more.
Worf, you were the one that pointed out that this is more than an exhibition game.
Since “It Counts”, we the fans should not be voting at all.
But we are
Baseball doesn’t know what the hell it wants with this game.
All I know is that Strasburg satisfies the need to have a great show and he’d be a great asset. The only thing against this is a moldy old tradition that was already broken by Nomo, Fidrych and Valenzuela
The All-Star Game is supposed to be a show. You don’t put on a show without one of your best stars.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
When he becomes a star he play in the game.
Just because he is paid like a star, and the media anoints him a star – it does not make him a star.
He is a star
Star isn’t about what you do. It’s about how much people TALK about what you do.
If baseball doesn’t put him in, then it will show just how stupid and dead an organization it is.
David Stern would have a gun to someone’s head to make sure the hot rookie got into the All-Star Game.
Of course, Selig actually died 5 years ago and is being propped up in a wheelchair, so he might not care.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
See this is why even though people talk about you...you are not a star
The NBA has A Rookie/2nd year game. I believe that’s where D. Rose made his All Star Debut. Not the Big Boy game
No, a star is a player who performs well over time. You're confusing that with being popular.

Why are the players selected just before the game if they mean to only count early votes?
You can use that argument either direction. Yes the position players are a popularity contest, but the pitchers are selected by a manager who in theory at least wants to win. With the idiot “mean something” thing thrown in, I think they actually do want to win. Worf wouldn’t listen to reason here unless it was his own…that’s what happens with dinosaurs…big purple head and tiny brain.

OK. Here is a new argument. Please read and comment.
Worf has stated that one of the objects of the All Star selection is to get the best pitchers in the game to win it.
Why should any STARTER be named to the game then.
We should load up on set-up men and closers that are used to pressure situations and only pitching an inning or two.
Is Ryan Webb from SD a better choice than Strasburg. He has pitched in the same amount of innings and has a better ERA and WHIP.
Discuss
There aren't enough good relievers to do that even if it was a good strategy.
"The ones who want to achieve and win championships motivate themselves." - Da Coach
by Sandberg's evil twin on Jun 24, 2010 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions
What about the point of making Ryan Webb an All Star?
You really aren’t going to let Strasburg go for more than 2 innings and Webb’s stats are better without the Hype
Answer
I’d like to discuss whether or not you actually believe Webb is a better pitcher than Strasburg. If you do, then you don’t know anything about baseball and I can’t help you.
I’ll get to your list of supposed better pitchers later, but this is almost too easy.
A) Strasburg has twice as many strikeouts in fewer IP
B) Strasburg walks fewer batters (1.78 vs 2.33)
C) Both Strasburg’s FIP & xFIP are immensely superior to Webb’s (1.53/1.36 vs 2.85/3.02)
D) Strasburg has a WAR 3 times as big as Webb
E) Webb’s low ERA & WHIP are almost certainly the result of a substantial amount of luck. His BABIP, HR/FB and strand rates are all unsupported by his underlying stats.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Strasburg is one of the best 5-6 pitchers in the NL right now and will most likely be top 3 by the end of the year.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
by WayneCampbell08 on Jun 25, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think using set up men and relievers is a good strategy only.
having said that, I really don’t know that much about Webb to say if he should be on the team or not. How long has he been up in the bigs? seems to have good stats.

I think that the people that think Strasburg is a Rock Star are
the same people that are already turning on a MLB Exhibition game “That Counts”
I do not believe that many causal fans will be drawn to the game because this rookie is pitching. You might see a bump in the Washington/Baltimore market but that’s it.
What I'd be curious to see is the dropoff in viewership
after he’s taken out of the game.
It’s not like he gets seven innings. So then the question is, if you’re Charlie Manuel, do you hold him until the fifth or sixth inning to build the suspense? Or do you put him in early to face the biggest AL stars?
Personally, I’d hold him until the end in case the NL had the lead going into the eighth, and let him go two to finish it. That way, they can tease his entrance the whole game long, and hold viewers for as long as possible.
"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.
He probably would.
It’s irritating to me that a lot of it is generated by ESPN just to make money off of it, but it is what it is. I will be interested to see what happens with viewers of him after ESPN finally stops trying to broadcast him and hype him 24/7…if it ever happens.

Manuel and the Nats call
Say what you will about the All-Star game, but in current format it decides home field advantage for the WS, so Manuel should pick the players that can most help him win. If he thinks Strasburg is one of those players, and the Nats allow it, he should be an All-Star.
It is a little over the top collecting stuff for the HOF from his first start…I almost expected to hear about viles of sweat they were taking…so I can understand not wanting to annoint him so quickly, but it would probably be good for baseball if he made the team.

Like I said in the other thread
there’s really no tradition or integrity left in the ASG anyhow, so just field the best 34 guys that will help you win and get home field advantage.
I couldn’t give a crap about the ratings, but Strasburg will draw. Hell, the game in Cleveland drew 10K more fans than normal attendance. Cleveland sucks, so it wasn’t the Indians they were there to see. I don’t care at all about the Nats, but I’ve watched and recorded the games that Strasburg has played in.
I really don’t care either way if he goes or not. But Manuel owes it to the National League to field the best possible team. If he believes that Strasburg fits the bill, then he should select him.
As a fan, who would you rather see come into the game; Strasburg, Silva or Ryan Webb? If you said anything other than Strasburg, you’re being disingenuous. Even Silva’s family would likely rather see Strasburg pitch.
+1
Thanks for posting this so I don’t have to. Chodes holds Strasburg responsible for the hype surrounding him for some insane reason. It must gall him to no end that Steven has even surpassed the unprecedented hype too. It’s amazing the degree that his detractors try to contort themselves to convince themselves that Strasburg shouldn’t be in the All-Star game.
Occam’s Razor applies here : If Strasburg is one of the top dozen pitchers in the league, he should be in the game. It’s as simple as that. Every other argument are exercises in pedantry.
