Lou on Zambrano's Meltdown

"He was ranting and raving and out of control," Piniella said after the game. "[I] had a conversation with our general manager [Jim Hendry]. We'll see what we do. We just couldn't tolerate that.

"It was embarrassing. There's no excuse for this, none at all."

Piniella said he'll support whatever decision is made by Hendry.

"It's a serious matter," Piniella said. "I know one thing, he's going to have to apologize to his teammates. That is for darn sure. And that's the least.

"There's no need for this, none at all. We have our share of problems. We don't need those. I'm embarrassed. Carlos should be embarrassed. "

A defining moment for Ricketts this one is.

I didn't get to see the game

How bad were the plays on the ground balls in the first inning?

Z has no excuse, I just wondered whether Lee, Ramirez, and whoever else looked like they were capable of making the play. I briefly heard Pat and Ron in the later innings talking about how DLee doesn’t look healthy.

I promise that's not what he was mad about...

I used to do this same thing when I was on the golf team back in the day… you KNOW how good you are, you play well in practice, you know you’re better than the guys you’re facing… then they make you look like a clown, and you take it personally and get upset. Not at anyone in particular, more as yourself. That aggression then pours out to the people around you, and you end up in a bad place. Carlos just needs to take some time off… a couple months, not in the bullpen, not in Iowa… he needs to go home and find himself and his inspiration for pitching again. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t… but either way he is a very unhappy human right now and needs to work that stuff out.

Usually one 1 of the hits he gives up is a home run....

unfortunately, with the Cubs’ offense, that one home run usually ends up costing them the game. The 2-0 game in Seattle was just the latest episode of this.

Interesting comments from Hendry regarding z's bullpen stint

said that Z was sent to the pen because he was every other starter was pitching better than him “no more, no less”. Obviously, that’s not what we were told at the time.

by Unique on Jun 25, 2010 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

For what it's worth, that remains a horrible, horrible decision that has impacted this season (and next) negatively.

Z’s demotion this year came after 4 starts. One of them was horrible. The other three were reasonable, high-K, low-ER affairs, and the final 1 of those 3 was pretty darn good.

The idea that he’d be demoted three weeks after his awful start, because his YTD stats looked bad on April 23, is just stupid.

Secondly, it was stupid because it was the equivalent of poking a bear with a stick. He’s a massively overpaid, and massively fragile asset. He may have had the worst YTD stats of the 5 as of April 23, but the idea that a starter “deserves” to go to the pen at some point in April based on YTD totals is not "just’, it is daft. By all accounts, it horribly ticked Z off. It made the team worse. And at some level, it contributed to Z having this meltdown, and Z’s trade value is left close to absolute zero.

Would it have been THAT hard to coddle the jerk and hope for some success and a trading window?

by D98 on Jun 25, 2010 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, time has proven you right.

The team panicked and did enormous damage by sending this guy to the pen. Moreover, I think the biggest damage was allowing this baby to refuse to perform up to the best of his ability because he was mad at the demotion. Remember how the speed of his pitches improved overnight once he was told he would be back in the rotation? The Red Sox traded Manny Ramírez when he pulled up a stunt like that. The Cubs, though, rewarded the offender.

by Fraggin Judge on Jun 25, 2010 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

that Z wasn’t giving his best? My god, man, I heard him say he was going to win the Cy Young Award. Can I trust no one in this wacky world?

for this organization? Yes.
Would it have been THAT hard to coddle the jerk and hope for some success and a trading window?

If there is one thing Jim Hendry has shown over the last few years is that if there is a wrong roster move to be made, he’ll make it. Both Zambrano’s move, and the calling up of Castro were panic moves designed to try and show the fanbase that they were doing “something” both moves have proven to be pretty goddamn stupid. Castro has made 10 errors and is hitting .255 after admittedly a very good OFFENSIVE start and then this today.

If Tom Ricketts has a brain in his head, today should be the final straw as far as Hendry’s career with this organization.

About time someone showed some emotion on this team

Carlos may have thrown a temper tantrum, but is that frustration any different from what we’ve been feeling when watching this team? I have to agree with Bob here about what he said. It’s about time someone showed some emotion. What the heck good did it do to suspend the guy indefinitely? Zambrano is the least of our problems. The offense has been the major problem.

He is a problem.

And while it was nice for someone to show some emotion — it’s complete bullshit on how he did show the emotion. Show some GD emotion on the DAMN FIELD. Not at your teammates. Zambrano always talks about he’s mature and he’s grown up, and it’s all bullshit. He’ll always be a child.

I want emotion when you fail and dedication to not make it happen again. I don’t want emotion that I expect from my 2-year-old daughter.

turning this team around signficantly. I’d love a team of 9 Byrds.

great leader?

This is about the fifth dude on the club I’ve seen anointed as a leader in the last couple of days. Which leads me to a couple of conclusions. Either people who say that so and so are “great leaders” either don’t have the slightest clue what it is a leader does, or we have far too many leaders and they are all attempting to lead in different directions.

This team is LEADERLESS

I’ve seen a number of people online, as well as heard a lot of people on the radio, talk about how this team has no fire, no passion, doesn’t give a crap about winning, etc. Much of this flak has been directed at Lou Piniella specifically.

Frankly, I think it’s hypocritical for the same people who criticized Lou Piniella for not showing any intensity to turn around and rip on Zambrano for this.

by Outshined_One on Jun 25, 2010 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

You've done the research and concluded

that it’s the exact same people?

by Danwood on Jun 25, 2010 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said in any of my posts that it was the exact same people.

Moreover, my assertion was that it would be hypocritical for those people criticizing Lou Piniella for not showing intensity while, at the same time, ripping on Zambrano for being an immature brat for having a blow-up at a player who he felt should have put more effort into a play.

by Outshined_One on Jun 25, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

There probably is.

But for some people, there might not be.

For example, I criticize Lou Piniellia for being a lousy in-game manager. I criticize Zambrano for being an infantile basket case with a hair-trigger temper. I see no hypocrisy there.

"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.

by Goodie1969 on Jun 25, 2010 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

If you think Lou Piniella is an idiot when it comes to things like constructing a lineup, using his bullpen, etc, I think that’s quite distinct from thinking it is detrimental to this team that Lou Piniella doesn’t show more intensity or scream and holler at guys who are loafing it in the field.

by Outshined_One on Jun 25, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Indeed.

I wouldn’t care if Lou hollers, laughs, cries, or whatever during the game, so long as he appears to have some grasp of the situation. It’s about his acumen, not his intensity. Sometimes he does make Jerry Manuel look like Bobcat Goldthwait, though.

"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.

by Goodie1969 on Jun 25, 2010 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I personally,

haven’t been saying those things toward Pinella, however, it’s so different for a guy that is playing in a game, and starting, to let his emotions boil over and throw his teammates under the bus and look for trouble. If Piniella yelled at his guys, it wouldn’t be in the same regard. Zambrano is being paid to perform at a high level, Piniella is being paid to manage the talent and give guys motavation. If Piniella decided to belittle his players, I WOULD be the first one to say that he has to go.

Maybe next year is finally our year.

Depends on what was said

If he’s storming into the dugout belittling other players for his own poor performance, then no, he didn’t need to do that.

Yup

I know a lot of people don’t like Z because he hasn’t lived up to his potential, but somebody had to show some emotion.

:D

I saw him say this before. He's 15 though. Not worth debating.

That was after he sat on Z's vuvuzela and broke it

It was an “accident”

On replay, I don't think Lee can just dive at that ball

He’s trying to play it on a hop and anticipate the bounce, you don’t dive for that. Z is even more in the wrong if that’s what set him off

That one fell just right

another shutout. We must be on pace for some sort of record here. At least in the non-deadball era.

carlos

is still a good pitcher. with a little creativity and a lot of cash you will find a taker. though jumping on a gentlemen like derek lee cant help your reputation.but d lee will be gone next year and carlos is still salvageable.wait and see.

I could care less that Z went nuts on this team. He’s terrible, and so are his teammates! I loved the fact that these overpriced goons were embarrassed on tv. The great DLEE who EVERYBODY loves(except me) finally got off his lazy a$$ and said something to Z to “put Z in his place” and then backed it up on the field going 1-4 with THREE K’s as he and his teammates scored a WHOPPING ZERO runs! If I was a pitcher on this team, I’d be FURIOUS as well!
