Lou on Zambrano's Meltdown
"He was ranting and raving and out of control," Piniella said after the game. "[I] had a conversation with our general manager [Jim Hendry]. We'll see what we do. We just couldn't tolerate that.
"It was embarrassing. There's no excuse for this, none at all."
Piniella said he'll support whatever decision is made by Hendry.
"It's a serious matter," Piniella said. "I know one thing, he's going to have to apologize to his teammates. That is for darn sure. And that's the least.
"There's no need for this, none at all. We have our share of problems. We don't need those. I'm embarrassed. Carlos should be embarrassed. "
A defining moment for Ricketts this one is.

Great Idea.
It will only cost the team 90 million.

Unofficial Self Appointed President of the Player Formerly Known as Castro Blocker Fan Club

I didn't get to see the game
How bad were the plays on the ground balls in the first inning?
Z has no excuse, I just wondered whether Lee, Ramirez, and whoever else looked like they were capable of making the play. I briefly heard Pat and Ron in the later innings talking about how DLee doesn’t look healthy.
Fontenot (fon-te-no): Cajun for "scrappy"
On the TV postgame...
… Hollandsworth said with the type of hitter PIerre is and the way he bunts, both corner infielders have to play in. There was no way to get to Pierre’s ball. They also said that even if Fontenot had dived, he wasn’t getting to it either. And as Lou said, no one else getting to the ball hit in the seats.
Zambrano showed up his teammates for the last time. As I said in the game thread, it’s a defining moment for Ricketts. Tell Hendry to make his best deal, tell Zambrano he’s not wanted and he needs to waive his NTC, eat whatever portion you have to, and get rid of this jerk. It’s finally time.

I promise that's not what he was mad about...
I used to do this same thing when I was on the golf team back in the day… you KNOW how good you are, you play well in practice, you know you’re better than the guys you’re facing… then they make you look like a clown, and you take it personally and get upset. Not at anyone in particular, more as yourself. That aggression then pours out to the people around you, and you end up in a bad place. Carlos just needs to take some time off… a couple months, not in the bullpen, not in Iowa… he needs to go home and find himself and his inspiration for pitching again. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t… but either way he is a very unhappy human right now and needs to work that stuff out.

only problem is
the options to Z not waiving his NTC are him sitting at home eating cheetos in his underwear while getting paid, or getting released, signing with another team for anything and getting paid double…

Lee made an effort after the ball.
Ramirez’s ball was alittle suspect but nothing insane.
Zambrano needs to go somewhere with his bullshit, basically. To another team actually.
Maybe next year is finally our year.
Well, at the very least, he's suspended

Soriano rolled his eyes, Soto and ARAM just stood there and watched him walk by. If anything, it looked like the club all agreed, Zambrano needed to STFU

Usually one 1 of the hits he gives up is a home run....
unfortunately, with the Cubs’ offense, that one home run usually ends up costing them the game. The 2-0 game in Seattle was just the latest episode of this.

I think Derrek was just the first guy to tell him to shut up… it looked like Carlos was just looking for a fight, and Derrek being the leader he is seemed to be trying to tell him “this is bullshit… BULLSHIT!” and that just upset Carlos more… I watched it a few times on my DVR and you can def make out Derrek saying “this is bullshit.”

I promise there isn’t a nicer guy on the team (maybe Byrd) but Derrek and Carlos are the two that have been together the longest (Rami too, maybe) and that just leads me to believe Carlos has some serious demons he needs to work out asap… it reminds me of how one of my friends would blow up at me when he was really depressed… it didn’t matter who he blew up at, just needed someone to blow up on.

He clearly has issues
And they need to be addressed… whether it’s his pride of someone else’s unwillingness to diagnose it, he needs to talk to somebody. Look at Zach Grienke, he had a similar issue, got help, and turned out to be a pretty good pitcher for a while.

More and more, Z cares about Z, I think. He’s been around long enough to know what a team mentality is. The way he blew up today, he did it because the 4 runs made HIm look bad. So he went after the ones he thought were culpable. A bigger person sucks it up and gets a 1-2-3 inning in the second.

Are you suggesting
we can trade him for a different porn star?
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.
Interesting comments from Hendry regarding z's bullpen stint
said that Z was sent to the pen because he was every other starter was pitching better than him “no more, no less”. Obviously, that’s not what we were told at the time.
"Enough foreplay- let's get crackin'"- Fred Garvin
For what it's worth, that remains a horrible, horrible decision that has impacted this season (and next) negatively.
Z’s demotion this year came after 4 starts. One of them was horrible. The other three were reasonable, high-K, low-ER affairs, and the final 1 of those 3 was pretty darn good.
The idea that he’d be demoted three weeks after his awful start, because his YTD stats looked bad on April 23, is just stupid.
Secondly, it was stupid because it was the equivalent of poking a bear with a stick. He’s a massively overpaid, and massively fragile asset. He may have had the worst YTD stats of the 5 as of April 23, but the idea that a starter “deserves” to go to the pen at some point in April based on YTD totals is not "just’, it is daft. By all accounts, it horribly ticked Z off. It made the team worse. And at some level, it contributed to Z having this meltdown, and Z’s trade value is left close to absolute zero.
Would it have been THAT hard to coddle the jerk and hope for some success and a trading window?
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Unfortunately, time has proven you right.
The team panicked and did enormous damage by sending this guy to the pen. Moreover, I think the biggest damage was allowing this baby to refuse to perform up to the best of his ability because he was mad at the demotion. Remember how the speed of his pitches improved overnight once he was told he would be back in the rotation? The Red Sox traded Manny Ramírez when he pulled up a stunt like that. The Cubs, though, rewarded the offender.

for this organization? Yes.
Would it have been THAT hard to coddle the jerk and hope for some success and a trading window?
If there is one thing Jim Hendry has shown over the last few years is that if there is a wrong roster move to be made, he’ll make it. Both Zambrano’s move, and the calling up of Castro were panic moves designed to try and show the fanbase that they were doing “something” both moves have proven to be pretty goddamn stupid. Castro has made 10 errors and is hitting .255 after admittedly a very good OFFENSIVE start and then this today.
If Tom Ricketts has a brain in his head, today should be the final straw as far as Hendry’s career with this organization.

Carlos may have thrown a temper tantrum, but is that frustration any different from what we’ve been feeling when watching this team? I have to agree with Bob here about what he said. It’s about time someone showed some emotion. What the heck good did it do to suspend the guy indefinitely? Zambrano is the least of our problems. The offense has been the major problem.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
He is a problem.
And while it was nice for someone to show some emotion — it’s complete bullshit on how he did show the emotion. Show some GD emotion on the DAMN FIELD. Not at your teammates. Zambrano always talks about he’s mature and he’s grown up, and it’s all bullshit. He’ll always be a child.
I want emotion when you fail and dedication to not make it happen again. I don’t want emotion that I expect from my 2-year-old daughter.
Maybe next year is finally our year.
I've seen plenty of people blow their tops in the strangest situations
But Lee certainly didn’t help the situation because he started shouting at Zambrano, as if he had a lot of room to start cussing the guy out in the first place. Lee should have been suspended too.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
Here we go.

Give me a break
Zambrano was shouting at no one in particular, Lee escalates by calling him out and swearing at the guy. Like that’s gonna cool Zambrano down. Really.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
It's called leadership and putting an asshole in his place. You give Z props for "showing emotion" but cut Lee down for the same thing?

Arguing that Lee should be suspended is more fun
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
I can't believe you actually said that. Lee escalates it? Lee should be suspended?
You’ve lost it here. The guy charges you and Lee should have backed down and ignored him. You famously want our players to have “fire” in the dugout for some weird reason and want to suspend Lee for doing the same thing? This makes no sense at all. Lee did what he should do today at least…stand up for himself and tell Carlos it’s on you today too, you’re bullshit to come after us when you fail yourself.

Zambrano was already, IMHO, losing it when he “stomped” on 1st base. Lee may or may not have made things worse.

I’ve seen a number of people online, as well as heard a lot of people on the radio, talk about how this team has no fire, no passion, doesn’t give a crap about winning, etc. Much of this flak has been directed at Lou Piniella specifically.
Frankly, I think it’s hypocritical for the same people who criticized Lou Piniella for not showing any intensity to turn around and rip on Zambrano for this.

There probably is.
But for some people, there might not be.
For example, I criticize Lou Piniellia for being a lousy in-game manager. I criticize Zambrano for being an infantile basket case with a hair-trigger temper. I see no hypocrisy there.
"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.
If you think Lou Piniella is an idiot when it comes to things like constructing a lineup, using his bullpen, etc, I think that’s quite distinct from thinking it is detrimental to this team that Lou Piniella doesn’t show more intensity or scream and holler at guys who are loafing it in the field.
by Outshined_One on Jun 25, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Indeed.
I wouldn’t care if Lou hollers, laughs, cries, or whatever during the game, so long as he appears to have some grasp of the situation. It’s about his acumen, not his intensity. Sometimes he does make Jerry Manuel look like Bobcat Goldthwait, though.
"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.
I personally,
haven’t been saying those things toward Pinella, however, it’s so different for a guy that is playing in a game, and starting, to let his emotions boil over and throw his teammates under the bus and look for trouble. If Piniella yelled at his guys, it wouldn’t be in the same regard. Zambrano is being paid to perform at a high level, Piniella is being paid to manage the talent and give guys motavation. If Piniella decided to belittle his players, I WOULD be the first one to say that he has to go.

They can have him for a
low-A player and we can pay 75% of his salary. And I will drive Zambrano across town personally.
Maybe next year is finally our year.
Ozzie's good friends with D. Lee as well.
I’m guessing he will try his best to steer the conversation away from today’s game.

more times than not, D Lee and the offense haven’t. To suspend a guy cause he was showing his emotions and how much they all sucked is pathetic

Zach Greinke gets as good, if not worse run support with better pitching performances
I don’t see him taking out Gatorade containers or belittling teammates.
Z was over the top..
telling his teammates to dive for balls. It seems he blamed that inning on his teammates not himself.
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." John Lennon
Depends on what was said
If he’s storming into the dugout belittling other players for his own poor performance, then no, he didn’t need to do that.
Yup
I know a lot of people don’t like Z because he hasn’t lived up to his potential, but somebody had to show some emotion.
:D
Yeah, that really helped. We went on a tear of eight more scoreless innings. Emotion cures all.

is still a good pitcher. with a little creativity and a lot of cash you will find a taker. though jumping on a gentlemen like derek lee cant help your reputation.but d lee will be gone next year and carlos is still salvageable.wait and see.
I could care less that Z went nuts on this team. He’s terrible, and so are his teammates! I loved the fact that these overpriced goons were embarrassed on tv. The great DLEE who EVERYBODY loves(except me) finally got off his lazy a$$ and said something to Z to “put Z in his place” and then backed it up on the field going 1-4 with THREE K’s as he and his teammates scored a WHOPPING ZERO runs! If I was a pitcher on this team, I’d be FURIOUS as well!
