I can't say he doesn't deserve it. I feel this might be the beginning of the end of his Cubs tenure. What a sad way to go. TL

Wow.
“His conduct wasn’t acceptable,” Hendry said. "His actions toward his teammates and staff were not acceptable.

“He will not be at the ballpark tomorrow. We’ll play with 24. We’ll play with 24 before we tolerate that kind of behavior.”

Oh my. You know what it sounds like? A SCHOOLHOUSE. This sounds like some adult telling his kids to stop misbehaving. Ugh. The players are acting like kids. What is this?

I was talking to Vermont Cubs Fan the other day about the French National Team meltdown, and warned that this could be happening to the Cubs. It’s starting to look like it has. Wow. Just wow.

All too true.

Zambrano = entire French team. But in that case it was a coaching problem. – TL

Remember someone said on another thread/post this week

that this (2010 Chicago Cubs) could get uglier? It started today.

The Cubs should eat...

But the Royals might be able to get good, young cheap players for DeJesus

Their managerial situation is unstable. The last thing Z needs is to go somewhere without strong management. If the Royals thought they were close to contending and thought that they could “fix” Carlos, then maybe. But really, I don’t see how this makes sense for them.

Z made a promise at the start of the season that he wouldn't be doing this kind of crap any more.

Now it’s time to face the music. You broke your promise, now you have to pay the price. He’ll be gone by the end of the year.

But look on the bright side… We can put Gorz back in the rotation!

by BeerCub on Jun 25, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Why

Do you have to deal with this from someone making so much money? Yes, I know it’s sports, and crossing arguments is tricky, but Cripes! In any organization you count on the most production from your highest paid people. Z seems to have no pride in his performance. Oh, he’ll go nutso on his fellow Cubs, but modifying himself and earning his money is too much of a bother. This is why baseball would be better served to be like football and do away with guaranteed contracts.

I'm glad to hear this.

He should have been suspended back in 2007 as well.

by owllover711 on Jun 26, 2010 12:09 AM CDT reply actions

It's going to take a miracle

or a magician to shed his contract. Let’s not forget about his NTC. He will be paid while he’s on suspension. How long is determined by the player’s union & MLB. Chances are unless a miracle happens Z will be with the Cubs until the end of his contract………..speaking of which, here is his contract:

     5 years/$91.5M (2008-12), plus 2013 vesting option
o signed extension with Cubs 8/17/07
          o $5M signing bonus
          o 08:$15M, 09:$17.75M, 10:$17.875M, 11:$17.875M, 12:$18M, 13:$19.25M
             vesting player option
          o full no-trade clause

Hey Jim - there was NO reason whatsoever to announce this.

What was gained here?

Jim gets to look tough in front of the media? In front of the fanbase? We get our red meat and our pound of flesh and we get to make Z the villain of 2010?

The only effect of Jim announcing this “suspension” is to completely obliterate Z’s trade value. My God – our GM literally said that he’d rather play with 24 players!!!

Would the Yankees do this? Would the Red Sox? NO! They’d close the locker room door, get their sh*t together, air their grievances, and emerge with the blandest set of stories you ever heard about how “losing takes it’s toll on you”, and how “we haven’t lived up to our own expectations” and “Z wears his emotions on his sleeve”, and my personal favorite “You’re upset, I’m upset. I know the fans are upset.”

Then everyone says “we have to get this thing turned around” and “a lot of good things were said in that locker room”, and everyone MOVES ON and ESPN has no story to run with.

Instead, Amateur Hour Jim goes on TV and says that our $18M pitcher is literally worth less than nothing… and by the way, anyone interested in trading for him?

Z blew up. He blew up after a remarkably frustrating inning during a remarkably frustrating season. He blew up because, rightly or (granted, mostly wrongly) he judged that his corner IF teammates weren’t giving it their all. That was probably a sentiment he’s nurtured for a few weeks at least…. I know I have felt the same thing about those two, and if you’re reading this post, you’ve probably felt the same thing.

Heck, last time Z pitched Lee couldn’t catch a GD thing, and Z shook it off…. publicly, anyway. And then the team continued to play like crap.

Lee may think that’s all “BS”, but at some point, someone has to stop "STFU"ing and speak up. Z is not the right person to do that, and he didn’t handle it well. This is what happens when a team has zero leadership in the front office, the dugout, or the clubhouse.

Had Z struck out the side

around those other balls, he might have a case.

His trade value was already bad. Other GMs aren’t stupid.

by Worf on Jun 26, 2010 6:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Hmmm.

Could have said the same thing about a certain outfielder’s suspension last September, yet Hendry was able to trade him for something useful.

It won’t be as easy with Z, but Hendry’s trade record is decent. It’s time for him to find out Z’s value.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Jun 26, 2010 7:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I knew someone would say this, but I disagree on this.

Hendry’s mistake was not reigning in Zambrano 5 years ago. Yesterday’s disciplinary actions were appropriate.

The reason that you can’t imagine the Yankees doing this is, you can’t imagine the tantrum on the Yankees. Jeter wouldn’t allow it, Cashman wouldn’t allow a player to continually act up until it got to that point, nor would Torre or Girardi.

The Cubs coddled Zambrano for years, letting “Z be Z” because he was a good pitcher. Some fans advocated it, too, or did the ostrich when Carlos had one of his episodes. The organizational failure happened over time, and got to the point where the suspension was necessary for the better of the team.

Whoever is the Cubs’ GM in 2011, even if it is Hendry, I hope that the lesson is finally learned that no one player can be allowed to act bigger than the team. Nice guy when he’s calm or not, Zambrano was allowed to be bigger than the Cubs – and Friday is what happens when that is allowed.

I don't disagree with any of this. Go ahead and discipline him - but why do it so publicly?

Are the Cubs any better off after the front office’s comments? No. They are worse off.

So why bother? Because the Cubs, for whatever reason, feel that they need to air their grievances in public, through leaks to the newspapers, and during press conferences.

The Mariners handled Bradley’s blow up earlier this year in a far, far better fashion. And the story quickly evaporated and the team got back to playing.

A comment from Jim along the lines of “Listen. What Z did today wasn’t acceptable. We’re all frustrated, and Z doesn’t bottle up his frustrations well, and what you was a manifestation of that. The team had quite a discussion after the game, and no, I’m not going to comment about what was said. Z’s going to take a couple of games to clear his head. In the meantime, we’ve got another game tomorrow” would have been infinitely better than “Z is suspended indefinitely – we’ll play with 24 before we play with him.”

There’s no reason to throw red meat to the media. Minimize the damage, move on, and get Z moved.

Also, there are some elements of this team that need a swift kick in the @ss. Z is not the right messenger, and he went way over the top. But a message along those lines is several weeks overdue.

Fair enough

I do think the comments about Zambrano being in the “bottom 3rd” were silly to say – even though they were accurate.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 26, 2010 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

IMHO Hendry was in a no win situation

if he said

The team had quite a discussion after the game, and no, I’m not going to comment about what was said. Z’s going to take a couple of games to clear his head. In the meantime, we’ve got another game tomorrow"

people are complaining that he is not taking control of the team, which has been one of many complaints by the anti Hendry crowd

by saying

"Z is suspended indefinitely – we’ll play with 24 before we play with him."

people will say he went too far, should have not said it publically, and so on.

much of what you say here i agree with

but you cannot blame Lou and Hendry for Z’s antics. He has done this multiple times, which is Z’s fault for not having self control.

I'm not blaming Lou or Hendry for Z's antics.

I am blaming Hendry for publicly aggravating the situation and destroying whatever value Z had left.

Deal with these situations behind closed doors.

sometimes easier said than done as well

i understand what you are saying, and am not saying it is wrong, but what are you going to do when everyone and their mother is asking where Z is the next day or two, as only 24 report to the park?

MB in Seattle is a much different situation, their media are not like sharks in the water waiting at every chance to jump at any bait possible, MB sent himself home where Zambrano was telling reporters off as he was walking out of the park, etc. Too many differences IMHO between the two situations

It's a press conference. In this case, Hendry is also on the sidelines.

We’re talking about reading a prepared statement here. This isn’t difficult.

this team

is lifeless and impotent.and now no more big z. this latest move has pitching starved gm,s sitting up and taking notice. just dont give him away.we can get something good for z. and if you think this year has been painfull wait till the next few.

by NOMAR on Jun 26, 2010 7:21 AM CDT reply actions

I see an almost need

to blow it up, and start over.
This, above all, shows that the season is done, and very possibly, so is the team as it is today.
There are WAY too many stories of players just trolling through the season, or giving no respect to authority, and yes, I think this starts from the top, excluding Ricketts, as he hasn’t been around long enough to really be a true part of this team yet.

The kids in the minors seem to be doing things the right way, maybe it’s time to imitate the Marlins for a bit (Minus payroll greed) and see how our kids handle the Majors.
If the season is a wash anyway, it’s the perfect time to dump some vets and let them make their mistakes in a season that is already gone.
