Murton, Maddux updates & stories for a slow day.

OK as this is an off day and we can only speculate on dumping Lou for so long  ( If they have not done it yet, I don't see it happening), a few small bits of information.Matt Murton is hitting .343 which is third best in his league and tops on his team. Looks like he found a good place, but I actually wouldn't mind a nice right handed OF who hits for contact.

Here is a nice bit on Maddux from  Austin Bibens-Dirkx

"Having Greg Maddux as one of the guys in the organization is nice," Bibens-Dirkx said of the four-time Cy Young winner-turned-Cubs special assistant. "I sat down with him after my last start, and the knowledge he has is ridiculous. He was predicting pitches before they would happen and what the results would be. He talked with me about philosophy and when to throw certain pitches in different counts. It's nice to have him around."

And another one from Doug Glanville's new book

"Insecurity also makes players creatures of habit, doing the same things over and over, in the same order - at least, until a rival catches on." Glanville says he would always enter the batter's box with his head down, until the great Greg Maddux took note of it: "One game while my head was down, the ball was halfway to home plate before I looked up. Easy strike. Advantage Maddux."

Aren't the Hanshin Tigers the japanese version of the Cubs?

they can’t ever win big games.

Glanville

Funny anecdote. I can totally see Maddux taking advantage of any weakness in his opponent.

This is an Odd Road-trip

2 scheduled off days on 1 road trip?

I'm not sure how much of a road trip

it was scheduled to be originally. Had the off day Monday held, I suspect the team would have flown back to Chicago on Sunday night, spent the off day at home and bused to Milwaukee on Monday night.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 3, 2010 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Which they still could do after the game on Monday afternoon....

.. they could be back in Chicago by early evening and bus to Milwaukee at noonish the next day.

A bit off topic, but,

I just got a Yahoo alert for Fantasy Football sign-up. In June? I wonder if they’re just sending that out to Cubs’ fans to get their mind off the season?

I was sitting in an airport club lounge in Tokyo in May, there was a baseball game on, and all of a sudden Murton comes to the plate and gets a hit. I forget if it was off Jason Simontachi or if they were on the same team. Watching Japanese baseball was a pleasant way to burn through part of a five hour layover.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

Do you have a link for the rest of Murton's numbers?

I’m just curious as to whether that .343 average is mostly singles or whether he’s able to hit for some power over there.

I had a link yesterday but can't find it right now

He does have 8 homers in about 150 ABs I think so not bad

FYI I found this from an interview he gave last month

“You’ve got flaming red hair that really stands out in this country. Did you have any nicknames as a kid that you can tell us about? For example, snowboarder Shaun White is known as “The Flying Tomato.”

Obviously back home anything referring to the hair was a nickname, whether it was “Big Red” or “Orange Guy” or whatever it may have been. “Ronald McDonald”—I heard it all, of course, anything referring to the red hair."

Didn't know about Murton playing there.

Don’t care. He didn’t hit a lot of anything overall here. The Maddux stories are nice.

I always like Ginger

He was kind of underrated. He actually hit 296 in his time here. 28 homers in about 800 at-bats. I wish him the best.

He lead the Cubs in BA in 2006

Lou of course stuffed him on the bench and he declined after that.

Murton had some notable shortcomings...

…but he was an above average hitter in 2006. Good OBP guy.

Yeah this will be my last post about it cause it's pointless given he's long gone from the majors.

But yes he hit for awhile and yet he wasn’t ruined by Lou. He stopped hitting and even if you believe that was Lou’s fault, the other teams he tried out for agreed. I like the guy and wish him the best, but he was never going to be the solution for anything.
