Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

"The DH may forever represent an unwanted demotion for older sluggers - Matsui, too, felt that way - but it is the fate of almost everyone, if they're good enough to hang around. Thurman Munson was spared this indignity, in tragic fashion, dying at age 32. "

Yes, Munson was better off leaving behind a wife and three kids than only hitting.

I hate everyone today.

Munson to 1B?

I assume the comment was facetious. I still wouldn’t have written it. Maybe, Munson could have moved to first base after Chambliss went to Atlanta. Maybe, Munson could have filled the time between Chambliss and Mattingly at first base for the Yankees. It’s just a thought. I’m sure Munson would have done some DH’ing.

What an incredibly ignorant thing to say.

I read the article to make sure there was no way this was taken out of context, and it clearly wasn’t. I’ve been vocal about my dislike of the DH but I would never go to the length of saying that someone was better off dying than being relegated to that spot….. I’m sure his family would disagree with Mr. Bondy.

I guess none of the Yankee fans care about that.

None of the 9 comments (at the time I’m posting this one) on the NY Daily News site mentions that.

It’s truly disgusting. Bondy should be disciplined and made to post an apology to the Yankees, Munson’s family and every living human being.

That one sentence could have been completely omitted.

It didn’t even fit in the paragraph it was in.

The DH may forever represent an unwanted demotion for older sluggers – Matsui, too, felt that way – but it is the fate of almost everyone, if they’re good enough to hang around. Thurman Munson was spared this indignity, in tragic fashion, dying at age 32. But Yogi Berra can only wish he had a DH spot as safe haven, instead of roaming the outfield at the end of his career.

He still would have gotten the point across, and not made himself look like an azz.

Munson wanted to go to the Indians

to be near his family and I am fairly sure he would have at least considered DHing to do it.

And I would have double-dog dared someone to make fun of him for it. The last sight they would have seen was Thurman’s boot on their face.

Hard to believe

this made it to print. Apology should be forth coming I assume

That NY Daily News writer...

is tacky (and I’m keeping myself from saying what I’d actually like to say). What a classless and clueless thing to write.

This ignorant comment typifies what Bondy has been writing for nearly 30 years,

as he has moved seamlessly from the Daily News to the NY Post and back again to the News. I first noticed him in ‘84, when he predicted certain collapse for the Cubs in their division race with the Mets. The joy he expressed in print over the Cubs’ eventual collapse in San Diego made me think he had some money riding on the outcome. His attitude toward the Cubs then, and to Munson’s memory today, just demonstrates that there is little room for sentiment or tradition in the dark heart of a typical New York sportswriter.

it's the Daily News

not particularly surprised. Almost as classless as their editorial page.
