In honor of playing in Pittsburgh , one of my favorite movie quotes

It is very silly but has always been a favorite of mine. For the culturally deprived among you who have never seen SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS which seriously one the great films, it is about a director of highly successful but stupid comedies who wants to make a serious film about the human condition. The studio people and his advisors are desperate to dissuade him and explain the films like this won’t do any business mentioning another serious film that tanked.

LeBrand: It died in Pittsburgh.
Hadrian: Like a dog!
John L. Sullivan: Aw, what do they know in Pittsburgh…
Hadrian: They know what they like.
John L. Sullivan: If they knew what they liked, they wouldn’t live in Pittsburgh!

honestly

i’d rather be in the pirates situation than ours…we have a bunch of old overpaid guys who are losing…they have a young nucleus mccutchen/walker/jones/doumit and according to espn they are bringing up “the big 3” this month…one of them being pedro alvarez….just saying, if we could switch rosters i might actually concider it

by Sky Davis on Jun 7, 2010 12:10 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't

They have young nucleus that they won’t pay to stick around once they’re free agents. This team has been “rebuilding” for about 15 years.

by Cubsfanatic on Jun 7, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

The Pirates don't have good pitching

Pitching is what wins consistently. A central team with medicore pitching and two big offensive sluggers? The Brewers with Braun/Fielder. Look at how they have done.

by IllinoisCubs on Jun 7, 2010 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Thats bs

i’m not arguing that the pirates have a team. I’m agreeing they’ve got a lot of young talent. What do the cubs have to look forward to except losing 3-1. Sure their pitching is decent, but they’ve got no pen, no position players to look forward to, and a handful of good starters getting no run support.

If it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless.

by Cubsfanatic on Jun 7, 2010 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll give you that

but not all the Pirates young talent is in the system. Some of it’s getting game experience sucking the last few years. I wouldn’t necessarily like to switch all the prospects up, but i’d rather have some promising talent than an aging team. Aram, Dlee, Fuku, Nady, Silva, Z.. This team is like the Maple Leafs of the 2000’s. Sign older players and be just good enough to make the playoffs or barely miss

If it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless.

the cubs would be lucky to start the rebuilding process this early. They’re in for 3-4 years of suckitude before they stockpile some young talent

Here's the thing, Wells is uniquely suited to eat up a lot of innings with his 89 mph stuff.

Zambrano, on the other hand, is accustomed to having great stuff to work with, only to lose it this season. Therefore his 89 mph fastball is more likely to get pounded. But until he gets his velocity back, the bullpen isn’t exactly a safe place for him either unless he’s strictly on mop-up duty.

Another Cashner question: Is he currently the anointed setup man?

Or is Lou still going with Marshall for his proven veteran-iness. I would give the eighth inning to Cashner until the NL shows it can hit 98 mph.

by LAcarl519 on Jun 7, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds good, but can you imagine the luxury of shortening the game to 7 innings with in-effect TWO closers?

Assuming he works out of course. Then Marshall and say Howry/Stevens can come in for the 7th ONLY if the starter is gassed at that point. Of course I still think Gorzelanny got a raw deal so in my scenario you could be looking at either of Zambrano or Wells to complement Marshall for middle/7th inning relief.

I’m sure I join legions of Cub fans who convince themselves this could be a dominating team if only managed differently.

Someone is going to take Silva's salary off our hands

When the Cubs start selling, someone will want Silva.

by JSB on Jun 7, 2010 12:40 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

And why exactly would we want to sell him?

by Doggie Stalker on Jun 7, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Because he is Carlos Silva and he will make $12 million next year

We need too free up slots for Wells, Jay Jackson, Cashner and Gorz. Those plus Z and Demp will be our rotation in 2011 and 2012.

by JSB on Jun 7, 2010 12:46 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Sell high!!!!

by Cubsfanatic on Jun 7, 2010 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I would not do it as a salary dump

and it is unlikely you will get much of a return. The Mariners are paying for him.

Correction.

The Mariners are paying for SOME of him.

I would do it as a salary dump

We are overloaded in the rotation, and the M’s sent us money, they aren’t paying Silva’ deal. Hell, if he keeps pitching like this you might sucker a team into taking his entire salary and throwing in a decent prospect.

Two things...

Carlos Silva, WTF? How is he THIS good?! All Star for sure at this rate.

Nice to see Geo with a solid day at the plate so far. But I’m sure Koyie Hill will start tomorrow.

If this score holds up

Silva will be tied for 2nd in the NL in wins with, among others, Roy Halladay.

When I thought, maybe, just maybe, he might be of (questionable) use, and deserved a chance,

I never thought he would have such a good start in the season.

This is a funny game.
