OT: BCB/SBN Freezing up Internet Explorer

Is anyone else having trouble with BCB occasionally locking up Internet Explorer entirely when trying to load the main page? I have experienced this at Work (WinXP) and at home both on my XP computer and my Vista computer. It only happens from time to time, and most of the time the main page loads fine, but other times, when it has happened, it locks up Internet Explorer to the point that I have to manuall kill the iexplore.exe process in Windows.

I have been having the same problem also

on my work computer. usually, when that happens, I can still click on the “fan post” or “fan shot” link and go there and it clears up. ALso to Katie…at work, Firefox is not an option. IE is the standard that was set by our IT staff and we are not allowed to install any software on the work computer, so IE it is (and it’s IE 7 since they don’t trust IE 8 yet)

NOTE

I did notice that I often clear my internet history, cookies, cache, etc., and if I have done that and then try to go to bleedcubbieblue, that seems to be when it locks up. Is that the case for anyone else? I just thought that might be a helpful note for the SBN tech team.

Yeah it happens if I click on the home page.

Specially if I am in a window that has been sitting for awhile. Close the window and bring up the home page in a new one, or use a fanshot or fanpost, no problem. It’s irritating when I forget and have to close the darn thing down.

SBN ought to release a PR statement about it cause I don’t think they care.

Huh? They ought to release a statement about something they don’t know about unless you tell them, and maybe it affects you differently than anyone else?

FWIW, I often leave a Firefox tab with BCB open all day and never have a problem with it.

Let them know exactly what the issue is. Make sure you tell them what OS/version and browser/version you are using.

If you are using IE6, there are known issues with IE6 — and that’s a real old browser. There may be issues with IE7 as well.

It didn't happen until about 3 days ago I think. Most people I know have been using IE8.

It is not happening because of the version being used or it would have happened before.

SBN has different ads that display on the main page

on a rotating basis. I am just speculating that one of the ads has something corrupt in it that is crashing Internet Explorer. Seems to me that would explain why it happens only occasionally. I suppose I should see if there is a way to report this to SBN and point them to this thread so they know it isn’t an isolated issue and is apparently widespread with Internet Explorer users.

by adam316 on Jul 13, 2010 9:25 AM CDT reply actions

No. It happens with any ad up there.

It’s not one ad. It’s whatever app or software they instituted several days ago. And yes, it seems to be an Explorer problem only.

I sent the following email to sbnation support

Hello, please see link:

http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2010/7/13/1567205/ot-bcb-sbn-freezing-up-internet

for more information. For me for at least the past 5 days or so, The main page of Bleed Cubbie Blue locks up and crashes my entire internet explorer occasionally. It is only sometimes that this happens, other times the page loads fine, and yet other times the right sidebar never loads and at the bottom left corner of the page it tells me that the page is “Done, but with errors”. I have experienced this on 3 different computers. One is on a different network with a different internet provider entirely. One computer is Windows XP with Internet Explorer 7. Another is Windows XP with Internet Explorer 8, and the other is Windows Vista with Internet Explorer 8. This problem seems to happen only with Internet Explorer (the only browser I use). According to the thread I started regarding this problem, it seems that other browsers such as Firefox do not experience this issue. I also suggest, Could it be possible that one of the rotating ads on the main Bleed Cubbie Blue page is causing this problem?

Thanks,

Adam316

Yep it's still freezing.

If it is the ad that is causing the problem with Explorer, I suspect it will take a little while. They aren’t going to want to give up the revenue that the ad brings and go back to the earlier format for the front page.

Actually don't. lol, I made a mistake

Instead of going out of protected mode, go into security settings (same path as above) and set the security level to HIGH! Has the same effect, but keeps you protected. The content that is causing IE to crash is coming from Pulse360 (and ad site)

"I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind.

by windycitywarrior on Jul 13, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

wow thanks WCW.

That makes more sense. I noticed it didn’t matter what ad was up there when it crashed, but perhaps the ads are all from the same place or I’m just unlucky.

In the top right corner click the "Tools" minitab

At the bottom of the list, there will be “Internet Options”. Click it.

In internet options, click the “Security” tab at the top of the new window.

Set your security level to High. Keep “Protected Mode” checked.

by Damen Jackson on Jul 13, 2010 12:36 PM CDT reply actions

with Safari it takes forever to load

IE6 often freezes, and yes I think it has to do with the particular ad trying to load at times because it will consistently choke on the same piece of javascript every time and I make a mental note to boycott whatever product ad is causing it. And no I can’t upgrade from IE6 at work.

The ads also give my WAP browser hell, and I would image make the site near useless on a smart phone as well.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, nobody cares about fancy layouts or animations on your webpage, they just make more people miserable by causing problems. A good webpage it the simplest one required to convey all the information because it will always be faster and available to more people. This is why Facebook destroyed Myspace and friendster etc. etc. and I could go on forever with examples.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Jul 13, 2010 12:48 PM CDT reply actions

… there are very few layouts/animations on SBN sites. Yes, there are issues occasionally with ads. They are working on them.

Only thing that works for me is to bring it up with no windows that matter if any...

Then click off the red x closing it when it freezes. Then use the new tab option to open a window, and click on the button to reopen last session. Works for some reason. After that you have to repeat to get the main page however, I use the fan post and fan shot sections as well as the recent posts to navigate. Without using reopen last session, the main page always freezes and you lose every window of your browser.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
