Think Strasburg might have helped a little bit? I used to think baseball could survive the idiots that ran it and the paste-eaters that want to keep it traditional. Now, I'm not so sure.

No

I doubt that many people would have tuned into to see Strasbourg. Strasbourg is something the serious baseball fan who is already watching would care about. My friends who aren’t huge baseball fans wouldn’t have been watching even if Strasbourg was in the game.

by JSB on Jul 15, 2010 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

I think you're wrong, although I live in the DC metro area.

If Strasburg had been in it, it would have generated a ton of buz in DC. As it was, Capp get the win and it was like it never happened. The day after the game they were talking about Strasburg, like the all-star game never happened.

by Texas Wahoo on Jul 15, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Strasburg has rock-star qualities. Non-baseball fans are talking about him. His presence would have brought some more casual viewers.

I think it's possible it would have brought viewers.

Everyone with ESPN on was forced to watch or hear about him. He does have recognition with casual fans as a result. And a 100 mph fast ball will attract viewers that normally don’t care about the game.

Remember 19-year old Dwight Gooden's first appearance?

Strasburg striking out three batters in one quick inning would have held the same type of interest for both casual and everyday fans.

I think the Strasbourg buzz has died down quite a bit

And I don’t think it really ever had that much life outside of baseball circles. Water cooler talk about World Cup and LeBron has far dominated any buzz that Strasbourg has had this year.

by JSB on Jul 16, 2010 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

so we should have made the ASG

You don't think Strasburg being announced weeks ago wouldn't have built more buzz?

LeBron’s abomination of a special drew a higher rating.

The NBA has caught and passed baseball and international soccer has now appeared in the rear view mirror.

by Worf on Jul 15, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

enough to get "good" ratings?

No. No I don’t

Lebron’s abomination of a specal drew a higher rating because he’s Lebron. Strasburg is certainly hyped, but he isn’t Lebron levels of notoriety yet.

by HuskerCorner on Jul 16, 2010 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

No, he's not.

But it still would have helped ratings.

Strasburg would have been announced weeks ago...

Giving it a chance to build.

THE FREAKING PRO BOWL did better than the All-Star Game.

Think about that: An exhibition held after the season did better than a game that has stakes — stupid stakes, but stakes — in mid-season.

The Pro Bowl competes with the run-up to the baseball season, the NBA trade deadline and the run-up to conference tournaments in college basketball. It is held in February, when real TVshows are on.

The All-Star Game competes with NOTHING.

There is no such thing as an ugly female breast

by Worf on Jul 16, 2010 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

What were the NBA All-Star ratings this year?

I think interest in all-star games in general has waned because of the proliferation of sports on cable. It used to be one of the best ways to watch guys that weren’t in your city or in your league. Now you can do that almost any night of the week. Also, baseball is a very local sport. There isn’t much national buzz for baseball, but when a given city’s team is good, there is plenty of buzz.

by JSB on Jul 16, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

What does that matter?

If Selig hadn’t screwed up the game perhaps I’d care a little more…but regardless MLB is making lots of money and I could care less if it gets a point or two higher in the ratings or not.

Yeah that's my feeling about it.

I agree with Worf that it would have helped ratings…but how much. Anyone tuning in to watch him would figure out when he pitched and leave. I thought Manuel was right to think that 5 appearances shouldn’t merit playing.

Is baseball worse because its TV ratings are low?

I never understand discussion of TV ratings and movie tickets sold. I neither buy nor sell advertsing, so that really doesnt matter to me.

If TV ratings go down, what does that mean to the average fan?

It didnt help that the game started 50 minutes after FOX went on the air.

Networks demand changes in product, goofier start times, jacking around the game.

And it just overall hurts.

TNT Has Game

I wish the NBA All-Star Game was on ABC. More fans could see the game on broadcast TV. IMO, the NBA is in worse financial shape than MLB. There are more franchises losing money with no chance of competing in the NBA than there are in MLB.

That's where I think ESPN has hurt the league.

They only care about LA, Boston and now Miami. When you say repeatedly the rest of the league doesn’t have a chance and is pretty much irrelevant, it gives casual fans that get past the thug antics displayed by some players little reason to watch unless they happen to live in those three cities.

Chances of Winning A Championship

The majority of basketball fans in Memphis will tell you that the University of Memphis has a better chance of winning the national championship in college basketball than the Grizzlies have of winning the NBA championship. Keep in mind, there are well over 300 division 1 basketball schools and only 30 NBA teams.

TNT is awesome.

Their analysts are often more fun than watching the game itself. I tune into those games when I can to watch the analysts, and their broadcasters aren’t bad either.

While the MLB All Star game is not what it used to be

it is still a far better game than the Pro Bowl, NBA game and the NHL game, all of which are jokes.

Because it's the NFL

You could put replacement players out there and it would sell as long as the NFL logo is on it. I’m convinced the NFL could make a fortune selling toilet paper as long as they had the NFL logo printed on every strip.

And because they changed when they played it

The Pro Bowl never used to draw any viewers because they aired it a week after the Super Bowl. Y’know – when nobody cares about football any more. They switched it this year to the week between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl, and guess what happened? People were still interested in football, so they still watched a football game. Weird, right?

Way to control for external factors in your stunning analysis, Worf.

Starting the actual GAME before 9PM EDT would have helped more

How many people tuned in at 8, saw all the pregame BS in full flow, said “I have to work tomorrow” and shut the game off? No point just watching the first few innings and no point staying up till midnight watching an exhibition game.
