Cubs Trade Rumors Fly: Cubs vs. Phillies Preview, Friday 7/16, 1:20 CT
A number of tweets were sent out last night containing various Cubs trade rumors. From Bruce Levine:
#Cubs According to Bruce Levine, the #Tigers and #Rockies are interested in trading for Ryan Theriot
That one, I'd do in a heartbeat. Levine again:
#Cubs According to Bruce Levine, the #Tigers, #Twins, #Mets and #Dodgers are among the teams interested in Ted Lilly
The Cubs have some leverage here; Ted will, obviously, make his start today, but it seems likely he'll be pitching for one of those teams -- or maybe someone else not mentioned -- soon. Meanwhile, George Ofman of WGN radio says:
#Cubs According to George Ofman (WGN Radio), Mike Fontenot is drawing interest from the #Yankees
I can't see the Cubs trading both Fontenot and Theriot, but you never know. Ofman again:
#Cubs According to George Ofman (WGN Radio), the #Padres and #Rangers are interested in trading for Xavier Nady
Nady's a nice guy and all, I'm sure, but I'll be happy to drive him to the airport. One last rumor from Ofman:
#Cubs According to George Ofman (WGN Radio), Jim Hendry is working on package deals with teams in order to try to trade Kosuke Fukudome
Without getting into the whole "was the Fukudome contract worth it" issue again, Hendry's been good at working out multi-team deals in the past (I'm guessing that's what "package deals" means). If he can shed Fukudome's deal, that'd be quite a bit of salary space freed up for 2011.

Joe Blanton has had a rough year, but he had a good outing against the Cubs on May 20 in Philadelphia, giving up three runs in seven innings. The Cubs had a chance to win that game until Lou left Ryan Dempster in too long, and ... stop me if you've heard this one before. Blanton throws strikes and has given up a lot of home runs, so if the Cubs keep their hitting shoes on from last night... good things could happen.
Ted Lilly also gives up a fair number of home runs. However, he has handled the current Phillies pretty well (23-for-91, .253). Today will be his first start against the Phillies this season.
Today's game is on the CSN's -- both Chicago and Philadelphia. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.
Baseball-reference.com game preview
Please visit our SB Nation Phillies site The Good Phight.
Today's first pitch thread will be up at 1:15 pm CDT, and the overflows will post at 2:15 pm, 3:15 pm and 4 pm CDT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I don't think so.
I do remember a time when I used to ♥ both Theriot and Fontenot almost as much as Ted Lilly. But that’s in the past.

Theriot and Fontenot were once well liked, but not ever loved IMHO.

Soto and Ted Lilly, I heart.
So happy to see Soto in the line up today! Last night when Pat & Ron were talking about how hot it is for pitchers and catchers I thought for sure this would give Lou an excuse to give him the day off today.

Big start for Ted
To turn his season around toward double-digit wins. Whether he’s with Cubs or not he needs to build his value as FA. I’m on the fence whether I want him back, I could see trying another route but if trade Z and don’t re-sign Lilly, our rotation will be pretty thin.
Glad to see the trade activity. Nady and one of Theriot/Fontenot surely gone. Pinella doesn’t seem to like/play Theriot much even tho he’s hit OK this year provides some pop at 2B.
Thanks for posting these threads Al.

Surely gone........
Is a bit of an overstatement.
Has Ricketts ever said how much he'd ideally
like to spend on payroll each year? The Cubs could be freeing up money to spend or just cutting payroll down to something Ricketts is comfortable with.
He has never placed a number on it publicly
And I don’t think he will – he feels that announcing that number won’t help the team in any way.
"Who ever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" -Frank Chance
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
I don't think he needs to reveal a payroll limit publicly
There’s no need to handcuff yourself via a public statement. People inside the industry might know, but we know the Cubs have some money to play with after 2010.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
No, I don't think he'll say, "This is how much I want to spend..."
I just didn’t know if at some point he hinted at what neighborhood he’d like to be in payroll-wise. Guess we won’t know until some dough is off the books. I wouldn’t be surprised though if he’d be more comfy closer to $100 Million than $150 Million.
I don't care the amount
Just don’t have 20-25% of the team with untradable contracts not due to NTC, but b/c who would want these guys @ this price.

I really dont think Ricketts is hung up on an amount
He is a business man. It is about ROI on your current assets. Clearly if you look at the payroll today vs the Cubs record he/we are not getting the bang for the buck. I believe him when he states that he will reinvest the profits back in to the team whether that is in the form of player salaries, improvements to the stadium and facilities, or neighborhood structures to bring in more revenue. The trick is keeping fannies in the seats while transforming the current roster.
In essence I’m saying that I think the payroll is irrelevant if your assets (players) perform and your revenue stream stays stable or improves.

For those of you suggesting Maddux for GM, Pitching Coach, Manager etc,
It is not that Maddux is not capable or someday willing to fill a full time role, but he has earned a couple of years where he does not have to do baseball 24/7 for 9 months of the year. He spent 25 years in pro-baseball and he often said he had promised his family he would take some time off after. Just be VERY grateful that he has decided to work for the Cubs because "part time " Maddux is better than full time almost anyone else.

Was buried in the vortex of suck that was the offense of Lee and Rami. Now that those two are starting to break out of their funks a little, Soriano’s hits can lead to more RBIs (we hope).

Man, that would be nice...
1. Theriot is likely gone at the end of the year anyway, and he’s not bringing any value on the field (he may even be subtracting value). If we can get anything for him, that’s a plus.
2. Given the effectiveness of Gorzellany and Marshall, I suspect Lilly won’t be brought back next year. He also should have some actual trade value. So I’d expect him to go too.
3. Neither here nor there to me.
4. If trading him nets anything in return, I’m fine with it. He’s not really worked out.
5. This would potentially be the biggest move. It’d clear at least one of our two awful OF contracts. It all depends on how much money we’d have to eat or what awfulness we had to take back in return.

Trading interchangeable pieces like Theriot, Fontenot, Nady is not a fire sale. Same for Fukudome. If the team doesn’t complete this little mini-resurgence they’re on right now, then possibly Lee if he’d waive his NTC by the deadline or a waiver deal in August. Ramirez, no.
