How about
Because he’s only about 10 HR’s short of the No. 3 hitter penciled into the lineup every single day. Sounds like reason enough to play him…perhaps he should hit fourth.
The reality is, it doesn’t really matter what lineup construction is used. This team is filled with guys that at this stage of their career just are not very good hitters. Some of them aren’t even major league hiters.
"When the day comes with that last winning run and I'm crying and covered in beer. I'll look to the sky and know I was right to think someday we'll go all the way." - Vedder
I think it does matter, at least, a little.
As Al mentioned in his preview, this team isn’t at a total loss for talent. It has three guys who are regulars who are having good years (Soriano, Byrd, Colvin).
But to start Kosuke and Hill regularly, to continue to hit Lee and Ramirez 3 and 4 and to continue to put Theriot in table-setting spots matters — especially considering how many close games the Cubs have lost this year.
cut myself off
doing all those things makes a difference.
Partly agree
But there is no way in the world this team is talented enough to have THREE guys have good seasons. Soriano’s “success” is softened by how few runs he drives in, the fact that he has to hit low in the order to have any value and due to his long stretches of completely unproductve AB’s…even this year.
Other than that, offensively, this team has rightly earned its standing as one of the worst in MLB all the way around.
"When the day comes with that last winning run and I'm crying and covered in beer. I'll look to the sky and know I was right to think someday we'll go all the way." - Vedder
I'm with you.
If Lou’s lineups weren’t so ridiculous, I think the Cubs would have won a few more games. But it’s not as if the Cubs would be above .500 or anything.
Not supporting Lou
Don’t get me wrong, Lou shares blame in this too, I’m certainly not supporting him here…playing Hill semi-regularly is foolish. I just don’t buy that a new manager would change the approaches of a bunch of guys, who are proving oncea again, that most MLB players are front-runners. When things go well, they play harder, are more alert, make plays outside their usual skill-set. When things go poorly, they mope, exert little more than reasonable effort and spend most of their time thinking about other things.
A bit of a chicken and egg thing for sure but the trick to establishing a continuously competent roster is identifying those players that are not the front-runners but will instead do the same things when things are going poorly that they like to do when things are going well. The real human side to professional sports.
This team is woefully short on those difference-making type players.
"When the day comes with that last winning run and I'm crying and covered in beer. I'll look to the sky and know I was right to think someday we'll go all the way." - Vedder

That's not what we're discussing.
