July: New Month, Same Story. Cubs vs. Reds Preview, Friday 7/2, 1:20 CT

This season makes very little sense. In 2006, when the Cubs had a slide similar to what they had in June 2010, that team had really only one good player left (Aramis Ramirez) after Derrek Lee went down. Seriously. Ronny Cedeno was the starting SS, and among position players who started a significant number of games that year were Freddie Bynum, John Mabry, Phil Nevin and Neifi Perez. Mark Prior, Juan Mateo, Wade Miller, Glendon Rusch, Les Walrond, Jae Kuk Ryu and Jerome Williams combined for 38 starts and a 7.21 ERA in 161 innings.

The 2006 Cubs finished second-to-last in runs scored, but also second-to-last in runs allowed.

The 2010 Cubs are better than that. We all know about their lack of run scoring, but the pitching staff has been very good. As of this morning the team ERA of 3.88 ranks sixth in the National League. All five teams with better ERA's have winning records, as do two of the teams below the Cubs. They rank second in quality starts (50), one behind the Cardinals.

I don't think I have ever seen a group of hitters that are this good, underperform their abilities by as much as the current Cub hitters are. It's completely inexplicable. There is no reason these hitters should be ahead of only the Astros and Pirates in the NL in runs scored (and 26th out of 30 major league teams).

I just don't get it. Do any of you?

Bronson Arroyo has not faced the Cubs since June 7, 2009, when he got a no-decision in a 14-inning game that the Cubs won. It is instructive to look at that boxscore. No fewer than 12 players who appeared for the Cubs that day are no longer on the major league roster. Arroyo is 7-6 lifetime in 19 appearances (12 starts) against the Cubs with a 3.06 ERA. I could tell you that some Cubs hit him, but would that really matter these days?

Ryan Dempster lost to the Reds on May 9 in Cincinnati. That was the day that Lou had Sean Marshall ready to go, but left Dempster in for one batter too long -- Joey Votto, who smashed a game-winning three-run homer off him. That's one of a pair of HR Votto has hit off Dempster; Votto just loves hitting Cub pitching. 14 of his 71 career HR are off the Cubs.

At least we scored yesterday!

It was a fun day in the bleachers, and today should be the same for those of you who are attending…. regardless of the poor baseball played on the north side.

It, ironically, makes it easier to enjoy being at the ballpark when we stink. There’s no stressful moments, because… well… we stink. So, it doesn’t matter.

by chilango2 on Jul 2, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

And Mother Nature is helping me, too.

The Mount Washington hike I have planned has been moved up to Monday due to a STELLAR forecast for there:

Highs in the low 60s, AM clouds giving way to PM sun/wind. You simply do not get those conditions at the summit of Mount Washington. Wind speeds of over 230 mph have been recorded up there.

So, not surprisingly, I’ll be gone all day Monday. I’ll probably appear back on BCB that evening. No Mountain hike post, though.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

by JFCubFan on Jul 2, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm guessing ...

that the run differential at this point in 2006 was much worse — i.e. the Cubs were getting blown out more often. Am I right, Al? Anyone?

Also, I really think part of the explanation is lineup construction. I know it’s a tired debate around here — but the fact that the Cubs have three guys who are having good years (Soriano, Byrd and Colvin) means that this team should be scoring more. But Theriot at the top of the order, Lee and Ramirez in the middle, Fukudome getting starts and Hill starting too often over Soto is part of the explanation, IMO.

by elgato on Jul 2, 2010 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, it'd be interesting to see a different first five

for awhile. Put Lee and Ramirez down near the end of the order where they belong right now, and work with Soriano, Byrd, Colvin, Soto, Fontenot, and maybe Fukudome (OBP) to fill the first five slots. As others have pointed out, having habitual strikeouts and GIDPs out of the 3/4 slots is absolute murder. It kills rallies, and tightens sphincters throughout the lineup, doing a lot more damage than the 200-ish averages imply.

Of course, the only way these changes would happen would be if the Cubs installed Bill James as manager. In the majors, no one puts Lee and Ramirez where their ‘hitting’ says they belong.

One other thing — all stats aside, are we not one of the worst (dumbest) situational-hitting teams you have ever seen? Whether first-pitch swinging at the wrong time, whiffing on ball four, or staring at strike three when decent contact produces a run, the mental approach to ‘hitting’ by this team is just abysmal.

by jerry morales rules on Jul 2, 2010 11:52 AM CDT reply actions

My opinion

Is this team is just not playing small ball. I would like to see the hitters work the count a little more, start bunting a little more, and stop swinging for the fences. Add that and improve the defense and this ball club would be much more enjoyable to watch.

Colvin=low OBP but power, not a leadoff hitter anywhere except Planet Lou.

I just noticed the D-Backs fired their GM and Manager in one fell swoop, bringing in former legend Kirk Gibson.

Wouldn’t that be awesome to see on the north side with Sandberg taking the reigns?

On the offense: I honestly think it’s the lineup. Mainly the fact that in changes all the time. I kind of wonder if all the platooning is counter-productive. Just pick your 8 best and fit them together in a logical way and don’t change it every week! This should have been sorted out in May! Lee and Ramirez aren’t 3 and 4 hitters this year, so deal with it. I also happen to think they should be giving reps to Colvin at first base to see if he remembers it well enough from college.

ugh...

They swing at bad pitches. Soriano still can not hit a breaking ball, Fukodome lunges at outside pitches and overall they have poor plate discipline.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear how the other teams approach the Cub hitters? Can you imagine what they say? I can.

It’s pathetic. DLee hasn’t hit an inside fast ball in how many games?

The necessary adjustments are not being made. As a professionla hitter you have to realize what the other team deems your weaknesses.

ARAm: No longer a threat on the down and in pitches.

The list goes on and on. Work the count. If you want hackers go sign some dudes off the ‘Fantasy Camp’ roster. lol…

Here’s an idea, how about making them pitch to you. Possibly get into those 2-0 and 3-1 counts. How do you do that? Look at the pitcher’s tendencies. He’s looking at yours.

I’m truly amazed at how bad Cubs hitters look at times. Almost like they want to strike out and swing at horrible pitches. Granted, these are major league pitchers, but still.

MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT ALREADY. THIS GAME IS ABOUT ADJUSTMENTS.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
