Simply put, NO!

As a player? A definite no.

As a manager? No. A lot of wins, but not much above .500 overall. Also, only one WS title (that was his only pennant, too) to show for all those wins. Often had teams that were good in the regular season but underachieved in the playoffs. I just do not see HOF.

Cox has way more wins that Piniella

There’s also the fact that he managed the Braves to 13 straight division titles, including two NL pennants and one WS title. That makes him a lock imo.

RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).

I think the criticism of Piniella should focus on what happened with his teams

He had a boatload of Hall of Fame caliber talent in Seattle and never could get to the World Series. He should be judged mostly by what he did in Seattle because that’s where the bulk of Piniella’s numbers come from. His brief time as a manager of the Reds did net a pennant and WS title, but a pennant with Seattle or Chicago in addition to that would have made him a lock. If he stuck around with the Reds and had a run similar to Cox, you might have a discussion.

RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).

A 9 percent chance of the Cubs winning the World Series this year?

Put down the cachaca

by Worf on Jul 21, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

what's cachaca??? i'd raise that number higher, but people would call me crazy.

because i believe that the Cubs are an underachieving team, not a bad team. Once their offense starts to click, watch out. It’s not like they are 20 games out, the Cardinals are red hot right now, but if the Cubs weep them, they’d be right there in the race.

Cachaca is Brazilian rum

primary ingredient in caipirinha

You know, something actual Brazilians drink

yup, I AM Brazilian, born there, than moved when I was 6, and

just like every Brazilian, my favorite sport is soccer, but my favorite team is the Cubs.

I know you are...have seen you post that before I think.

I didn’t think Worf knew you were 14 though is all I was saying. He expects you to know all about Brazilian rum at your age which is just an error on his part.

Is Cox in the HOF?

No, but he will be.

probably

He won a lot more games than Lou and made four more WS appearances, so they are hardly equivalent.

Also...

… Lou had seven postseason appearances. Cox has 15 and might be in line for another one this year.

In total agreement, great article

I think Piniella has a borderline case

Actually, the biggest marks against him are the 2001 Mariners and 2008 Cubs. That should be enough to keep him out for now if not forever. When you consider his contemporaries are three of the best managers of all time, there’s no way he gets in any time soon. LaRussa, Torre and Cox all deserve to get in. Those guys are slam dunks.

RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).

by Ace Venom on Jul 21, 2010 11:01 AM CDT reply actions

I agree with the first part

The 2001 Mariners especially are a stain on his resume.

But the whole bit about contemporaries in nonsense. The Hall shouldn’t give a damn about how many people are good at the same time. If there are 10 worthy managers right now, then all 10 should get in. If there are 10 worthy 1B, all10 should get in.

Either Pinella is a HoF (and I think not) or he isn’t. The fact that he and LaRussa were active at about the same time has nothing to do with it.

I'm not saying how it should be

I’m simply saying how it is. It’s the reason why Alan Trammell never got in despite having a worthy resume. He had the bad luck of playing at the same time as Ozzie Smith.

Among other deserving candidates

RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).

by Ace Venom on Jul 21, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

He just missed, dammit.

Even a hard-fought playoff series in ‘07 or ’08 might have pushed him past the threshold, but without that final achievement. I don’t think he meets the HOF standard. Of course, he still has a few games left this year to finish strong.
