Andrew Cashner Fined For Throwing At Blake DeWitt
Interesting. This note is buried at the bottom of this Bruce Miles article from Friday evening.

Good for him...The Cubs should pick up the tab!
Padilla was clearly throwing at Byrd that night. The only problem that I had was that Padilla wasn’t the one getting pegged!
I think Byrd should take it.

Cashner had no chance to wait for the right guy.
It was interesting hearing Scott Sanderson talking about carrying a grudge the other day…having a 7 year one was sure funny. Byrd has gotten plunked so much this year it’s good to see someone standing up for him. I’d think Byrd should pay it, if not the team. Byrd certainly has the cash to do so comparatively.

Mr. Bryd
will write the check for Andrew Cashner.
No way in hell Cashner is paying the fine!!
Instant respect for the kid
I don’t like throwing at hitters, unless it’s for something like this. Padilla’s throw at Byrd couldn’t go unanswered. Everyone in the park knew it was a cheap shot by Padilla, who has a history of sillyness.
Reminded me of Maddux standing up for his team in his first full year with us.
Though with Cashner you’d better be careful to get out of the way…he sure could throw some smoke if he wanted to. I remember reading how Hawk had warned Maddux not to hit him and risk the ire of management as a rookie. Made me smile reading that and seeing Cash say forget this stuff, you throw at our player and expect one for yours.

Not to nitpick
( Just can’t help myself) It was Sutcliff & Sanderson who told Maddux not to hit anyone YET so that he could complete 5 innings and get the win since management had said he would be sent down if he did not improve. I don’t think Dawson was in any position to say much. What I did not realize until I did some research for my BCB Maddux profile was that Maddux did NOT hit the first batter or even the second one, he struck them both up and THEN he plunked Benito Santiago and got tossed in the 4th. I can’t prove it, but my theory is he felt Santiago as the catcher was more responsible for the Dawson beaning and Show of course was out of the game or I am sure he would have waited for him.

Well I will read it again if I can find the book.
I read it saying Hawk pulled him aside and warned him of those consequences. Perhaps I’m wrong. I gave that book back to my father and I don’t know why…he doesn’t read stuff like that.

Interesting to see TLR's reaction to being the Cubs manager.
It was what I thought he’d say. No question now if there ever was one he’s not interested.

I heard LaRussa was just going to retire to Vegas and make his next 10 million on nickel slots.

Funny thing about him is
He looked ancient, tired, sounded worn out by baseball, just ready to retire right before he signed the last contract. And since he’s looked still grumpy and irritable to the media, but more energized. Perhaps having the player killed, Spezio freaking out over alcohol, and his own DUI …alll those issues fading has helped him. Two years ago I was sure he would retire soon. Now who knows…could be a number of years yet.

From what I heard/read
Cashner got a nice reputation with the team for that. It might have cemented his place as the 7th inning reliever too. A measly fine for hopefully a bright future in the Cubs uniform.
I recommend "The Baseball Codes"
Full title – “The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, and Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules of America’s Pastime,” by Jason Turbow and Michael Duca.
I read it a couple of weeks ago, and, as the title indicates, it offers a fascinating inside look at the types of behavior considered acceptable or not by major leaguers based on interviews with current and former players (including Bob Brenley). It cites numerous examples of players getting drilled for no apparent reason, just like the incident where Padilla hit Byrd late in a 7-0 blowout. When that happens, it’s often in retaliation for something that occurred years earlier, sometimes even dating back to an incident that occurred when the players involved were in minors. Often, as with Padilla, the reason had its roots in something that happened off the field, in this instance the reason being the comments Byrd made about him being a negative influence after they’d been teammates on the Rangers. Apparently, that sort of thing happens quite often, so the next time you see something similar you can be almost certain there’s an interesting back story that the fans will never know about.
And according to the “code,” Andrew Cashner did exactly the right thing and instantly earned instant respect from his teammates. Conversely, If he hadn’t retaliated, he would have lost any respect he had already earned, and his lack of action would have been remembered with contempt by his teammates for the rest of his career and beyond. So, way to go Andrew!

And now
Cashner and DeWitt are teammates! I wonder how much respect Cashner gets from him?
