Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Derrick Lee

I'm definetly going to sound like a meathead, but the story of Sunday nights game to me was Lee's comments afterwards.  "It was a great homestand....."    You have to be kidding me!  I understand it's a long season and there is always another game, but come on.  On this homestand they had a chance to sweep the Phillies and lost, they lost a series to the Astros, and again had a chance to sweep the Cardinals and lost.  Do you think Dempsters upset he put a 3-1 pitch to Pujols right down the middle?  Do you think Theriot is upset he seems to be making numerous MAJOR mistakes per game?  Do you think Soriano is upset he didn't get to second base on his blooper when Soto hit the next pitch into a 6-4-3?  Or are all these guys sleeping good because it was a "great homestand"

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I didn't like his comment either

For once, Lou’s was way more accurate:

“I thought we should’ve been 9-1, if we hit a little bit,” manager Lou Piniella said. "That’s the way I look at it. The games we hit in, we won.

He wrapped it up with his usual “What are you gonna do?” line, which turns my hair gray, but otherwise he nailed it.

Nice 3-1 to Pujols. When he got down 3-0, I thought he would just essentially put him on. I know these guys are all confident enough to think they can get any hitter in any situation, but c’mon, Demp!

Truly though

What else would you have Piniella say? What ARE you gonna do? It isn’t as if Piniella or anyone else can change the mindset of some of these players.

Absolutely.

I’d add that for myself there was little mistakes for Lou in it. Yeah he can alter the batting order, pull a pitcher, even perhaps make a squeeze play but really the players had golden opportunities to take this easily and refused to. They were the ones that failed and I sure don’t see a Sandberg or any other manager making a difference for the homestand. He burned his pitchers early sometimes, but really when your bullpen sucks you have to play for a win before the 12th. Perhaps he did too quickly…but hell when you have three innings in a row with a man on 3rd, one out…don’t tell me it’s the manager’s fault he didn’t squeeze. Blame players being paid millions of dollars a year who cannot hit a bad bullpen for a sac fly.

Castro's 2-out RBI single

was very atypical of this bunch. None of them can get the clutch hit. Byrd’s AB was terrible in the 10th.

As bad as this game felt after, it wasn’t anywhere near as agonizing as that extra inning debacle to the Astros.

There, I feel better ;)

On another note about Lee...

I appears the Texas Rangers are looking at him

http://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/19569607215

The Texas Rangers are deep in conversations with Marlins for Cantu, taking close look at Cubs’ Lee, and want another starter.

good

he is an anchor this year. Retrospectively he should have been traded after his .970 OPS last year, maybe Cubs can trade Samardijza with him as a package.

Slight bonus for Lee

The Rangers are in the West, he’d play near home a decent bit

"Near home"?

Texas isn’t “near home”.

Oh, you must mean the two series the Rangers have left in Oakland. Which is 90 miles from Lee’s home in Sacramento. That’d make for an easy commute.

I laugh when I hear about players from one coast or another wanting to play “near home”, when home is a one-hour plane ride from the city they’re talking about. When you have to get on a plane to be home, it’s still not that close.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Jul 27, 2010 7:42 AM CDT up reply actions

At the same time, Al.

It would be much easier for family to come out and drive 90 miles for a couple of 3 game series than a few hundred miles. I know it’s not the same as being home, but when you’re on the road as much as these guys, even just getting your family with you for a few days can feel like home.

If moving to Texas means seeing your family 7-10 more times in the course of the year, that’s a big thing to thing about.

by bdlugz on Jul 27, 2010 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions

The Rangers play seven games in Oakland.

The Cubs play four games in San Francisco next month.

So it’d be a big deal for three days? Not so much, I’d think.

…they could just send him down to Triple A. His offensive numbers over the last two seasons are pretty horrible.

no, I don't think Soriano

is even aware he should have been on 2nd, and that it was “one of the little” things that could have allowed Cubs to win it 9.

I know that....Talking about stats.

If we had the Hoff the year instead of Lee, and they were doing the same thing, would Lou have batted Micah 3rd all year?

Or is the lineup made according to stats from other seasons?

I guess the only reason Lou is still employed is because of stats from another time.

by TJ11 on Jul 27, 2010 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

How long does Lou wait for Derrek to come around? Forever? Because he was good in the past? This is just dumb managing.

by cubbybear on Jul 27, 2010 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Just asking a question man....

Here I will rewrite it…..

I think its awesome that Lou is giving tribute to Derrek Lee’s career by batting him 3rd all season!

So what if he is having a little bit of an off year? His track record shoes he should still be treated the same way as before!

That’s why Lou should be treated the same, he has won 1800 games and we should not be questioning his judgement! We should be worried that he is really going to follow through on this retirement thing. Tom Ricketts needs to get with it and offer the extention to him and Hendry NOW!
