But I’m kinda feeling the sincerity. Or that may just be wishful thinking. Either way, I hope he rebounds from this and pitches himself back into the rotation.

Won't change anybody's mind, I bet.

I like his fire, and I think he wants to win. Glad the team stood up to him.

Come back, and pitch better, than you can be an ass. Ask Bobby Knight about being a jerk. You can get away with it as long as you win.

Well, I feel better already..............

but he needs to deal with his teammates and the organization, which, I assume, he will also have to handle. But I think it’s still a moot point, and he is on his way out.

If you buy this, I have a bridge for sale.

by JB 23 on Jul 26, 2010 3:33 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

It's good he came out and did this.

Now we will see if his future actions reflect it. These days it seems like apologies are just expected and people will make them for that reason only. Z did take responsibility for his own actions, instead of saying something like “I’m sorry that had to happen” or some other roundabout excuse. Apology accepted (at least from me) now get us some W’s!

by Fonzie2178 on Jul 26, 2010 3:35 PM CDT reply actions

Last time he apologized

he said it would never happen again, because he was ashamed of how he looked and wanted to be a better role model for his daughter. Then he blew up again. So I take any of his apologies and promises for what they are worth—nothing.

This was something he was forced to do if he wanted to rejoin the team. We were told that much from the beginning.

He’s a human being and he’s flawed just like the rest of us, I get that. So I’m not going to condemn him for his actions, but I’m not going to buy this forced BS.

It did not sound rehearsed at all!

I am sure there is no reason that everything won’t be fine with the Cubs now!

This is the springboard to a giant winning streak!

He will be huge for us the rest of the season and beyond!

how about a bit of humility.

Z has a real problem to fix. The fact that the Cubs are showing zero tolerance, FINALLY, may be what this spoiled child has needed.

Are you really any better when you type, “Get your ass out of town, Z.”

I can see typing “I don’t buy it,” if you don’t. But acting in the same way that Z has (showing anger) just makes your point lose credibility (what little you might have left).

I know I am not perfect. We are all flawed. I wonder how you would hold up under the combination of “spoiled with unlimited attention” and living in the fishbowl that is Cubs’ baseball?

Now if we can just get him to realize his narcissistic behavior ain’t gonna fly no more whether he wins or loses. The city turned on Sosa and he must realize he’s hanging by a thread.

I wish he would explain what he's sorry for.

Without that, it’s just BS. Try apologizing to your wife without saying what specifically you did that was wrong or without qualifying yourself as a jerk and see how far that gets you. Also try apologizing by saying “I apologize” instead of “I’m sorry.” That won’t fly, either.

I don’t care that he’s fiery, quick-tempered, flamboyant, etc. I care that he’s selfish. He only seems to care how he’s affected by things that happen, not how the team is affected. A centered, selfless man would hang his head in shame over a bad inning, not attack his teammates for plays they didn’t make. I don’t need him to be quiet, or whatever the hell he was talking about in that last sentence. I need him to pitch better, to be better, or just be gone.

Why am I going to college?

Zambrano proved I could make $18 million by pissing off a lot of people and being nothing but a selfish, talking head.

I agree with most of you here. I’m sick of him talking. I don’t even want the apology, I never wanted one; I just want him to go out, earn his paycheck, and give this team the best chance we have to win when he’s on the mound. He hasn’t done any of that since we gave him that contract extension. Sure, maybe he has every once in awhile, but not as often as we’re paying him to do.

Lord knows he had the talent to do so, now I’m not even sure if he does anymore. I was done with Z in 2007 and hope we cut the ties as soon as we can, if we can.

Whether Z is sincere or not is beside the point for me.

I actually liked his demeanor in the interview and am willing to accept the idea that he was genuinely trying to fire up the team and things just got out of control. The bigger issue for me is that Z went to ESPN before addressing all of his teammates. He did apparently apologize to DLee, which was nice. But didn’t his actions in the dugout affect everyone on the team and, therefore, doesn’t every Cubs player deserve an apology before Carlos goes to the media?

ESPN missed the boat, then!

They could have sold a one-hour special, titled it “The Apology”, sold a ton of commercial time that would have been donated to charity, and had Bobby Valentine, John Kruk and Tim Kurkjian blather for 27 minutes about whether he’d apologize or not before having the actual apology.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
