Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

I'm posting this article about Andres Torres because I went to dozens of games in 2008 where I saw him up close and personal at AAA Iowa. This seems to have become a trend in the last three years, in which the Cubs have either just missed on a prospect, or given up on him entirely only to have him see success with other teams.

I'm looking at YOU Casey McGehee and Angel Pagan!

That's the real bitter pill we've had to swallow as a result of aging players attached to long term contracts.

I didn't mean to imply Torres was a prospect...

Just grumbling at hindsight is all…

2010 WAR (wins above replacement):
Angel Pagan: 3.7 WAR
Andres Torres: 4.1 WAR
Alfonso Soriano: 2.8 WAR
Kosuke Fukudome: 0.8 WAR

Pagan is the one who really hurts.

Pagan is dumber than Ronny Cedeno

I don’t care that he’s gone. He’s back with the Mets where he started anyway, as one of their top prospects.

Dumber than Ronny Cedeno????

I remember Pagan. He was able to walk without falling over. That is the only criteria I will accept for considering someone dumber than Cedeno.

Why are you saying he's the 2nd best outfielder in the NL anyway?

man I don’t see any reason to bring up the old Casey McGehee thing.

Second best outfielder in the NL

Can this please stop. All this WAR stuff, it is a wonderful stat, however I am not taking Andres Torres over Colvin or Byrd on this team. A 30 year old outfielder having a good year, nice story.
Pagan, Torres and McGehee those three would surely have the Cubs in the playoffs

You shouldn't be comparing him to Colvin or Byrd

You should be comparing him to Milton Bradley, Kosuke Fukudome, or Xavier Nady, who we’ve spent many millions of dollars to have suck it up in our OF the past few seasons.

Thank you... this was the point of my post.

Yeah, we sure did.

Along with Lincecum, only problem with Lincecum is he wouldn’t have been half the pitcher he is now, at least I don’t think so. We picked him up in the ’03 draft before he even went to college, and I think he was wise to go to college and re-enter the draft, only to be chosen by San Francisco.

Yes, I'm aware.

People need to stop talking about McGehee and Pagan.

There was no way in hell they were going to play with the Cubs. How would you have felt two years ago if McGehee started over Ramirez? What about Pagan starting over Soriano or any other outfield? They would have never succeeded in Chicago and that’s the simple truth. So STFU and criticizing Hendry for giving them away.

However.

McGehee and Pagan could have been decent bench players for this team. I’d much rather have them than, for example, Nady and Baker.

Again... I wasn't ever critical in my post was I?

The point is, in hindsight, we should always look to promote from within before we have to rely on the free agent market for guys like Nady.
