Dang. I didn't know the Angels had made an offer.
Lee could have, potentially, brought us a “failed prospect” like Brandon Wood.
Sometimes those failed prospects work out.

Report: Derrek Lee is going to use his no trade clause to remain in Chicago
http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2010/7/28/1592629/lee-to-remain-a-cub
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
Maybe
he will retire with Lou.
"I lof to hit de home ron!"
He appears
to be in a pretty serious decline, both on offense and defense. It could happen! :)
"I lof to hit de home ron!"
think about,
we resign him for less money, we certainly have the leverage. he provides veteran presence, gold glove defense, anything else is a bonus,
The 2010 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp ruled!!!!
He's gone at the end of the year.
He’s declining, his competitive desire is certainly called into question now, and he’ll want more than a 1-year deal.
then why would he stay?
What’s the point then if he’s still on the Cubs just for two more months?
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
don't know but the Cubs are in charge for next year at this point it would appear
The 2010 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp ruled!!!!
You'd have to ask him.
But my guess would be family issues. Why in the hell else would he turn down the chance to go to a contender — especially Texas?
The only logical reason is that he wants to remain in Chicago
And if it were for family issues, he’d accept a trade to go closer to home in Texas or California. Remaining in Chicago is the only thing I really think is on his mind. But of course, what do I know haha
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
Closer to home in Texas? He's from NoCal.
My opinion of Derrek Lee just went through the floor. It looks like he doesn’t have the competitive fire to relocate for three months to possibly win a championship.
I think you're looking at it at the wrong angle
I’m admiring him for wanting to stay in Chicago and play for the team that he loves.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
(rolls eyes)
If he truly loved the Cubs, he’d accept the trade, allow the Cubs to get some prospects and salary relief and re-sign in the offseason with a hometown discount.
And NONE of those things are happening.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Derrek.
I'd give him a two year deal, max
He seems like he would take a home town discount to remain with the Cubs
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
We need to stop assuming ...
that players will accept hometown discounts.
I'm not assuming anything
But given that he seems like he wants to stay in Chicago, then why wouldn’t he accept a home town discount? I’m being skeptical here.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
The only other thing I can figure ...
is that he figures he’ll start for the Cubs for the rest of the year (except today!), get more at-bats and increase his value as a FA.
And if that’s the case, I’ll be happy to see him leave.
I hope Lou benches his ass.
If you couldn’t tell, this REALLY pisses me off.
I'm thinking a "mediocre player discount" may be more likely.
I don’t see anyone else throwing 8 figures at Lee after this season.
Maybe he’d take 1 year at, say, $8M.

This team is so ridiculously inept on so many levels.
Zambrano is going to be called up Friday despite a bad outing for the I-Cubs. Hendry can’t dump Fukudome even if the Cubs eat a good portion of his remaining salary. Lee declines a trade to a contender, making me wonder if Z was right to question his competitiveness. Aramis won’t opt out only because he had an Aaron Miles style first half. We’re still paying for Aaron Miles to hit .320 for the Cardinals. Lou admits that he started his bench the day before an off day. Ryan Theriot is the everyday second baseman and occasional leadoff hitter despite bad defense, no power, low OBP and horrible baserunning. And four members of our bullpen probably shouldn’t be in the majors.
Did I miss anything?

Can we please get a major league caliber hitter for our backup catcher next year?
That spot doesn’t have to be a black hole offensively like some people here seem to think is OK. The backup catcher could actually be used as a pinch hitter occasionally and actually help a good team more than just being an insurance policy.
"Any player who gets the opportunity to play at Wrigley should welcome it"
You don't generally want to use a backup C as a PH
If you use the backup in the 6th and Soto gets hurt in the 7th.. who catches? This is why defensive catchers are generally defensive orientated.
Yes, I know that, but if you get in a spot in the late innings
wouldn’t it be nice to have a guy who could hit a little bit on the bench??

At first, I was pissed that this game wasn't on WGN (I live in STL)
But after reading about DPLee’s situation, and looking at this dreck of a starting lineup, I am glad that I won’t be wasting time I don’t have watching this white flag waving type of game. Seriously, of all the guys not playing, Theriot is in there, and Fontenot STILL is invisible. Ok, put Lee, Dome, Z, Soriano, Rami, Riot, Baker, Nady, Hill on waivers. Accept a cheese sandwich for them (and salary relief). At the very least, get rid of somebody, so we can bring up the Hoff, bench Lee, and give Hoff three straight weeks of playing time. This season is done, and for his sake, and the Cubs sake, find out what the hell we are going to do at 1b next year. Lee isn’t the answer.
CRAP! Now, to do baby stuff. Bah.

If the cubs are done this year, and he can’t help us next year in a meaningful way, then we need to start looking for answers at 1b. He is going to collect his paycheck anyway, so let’s plan for the future. Maybe the cubs can look out for what is best FOR THE TEAM for a change.

How does staying with the Cubs for the next 60 games help his family?

Do they live in Chicago during the summer?
If so, staying means that he doesn’t have to relocate/help them relocate in the middle of his season. He could take care of it during his long (post seasonless) offseason.

Sorry...
I don’t have sympathy for multimillionaires that only work 7 months out of the year and use “moving their family” (from one exclusive neighborhood to another) as an excuse. Boo-Frickin’ Hoo.

OH agreed...
but if given the choice…while I would like to think that I would do what is best for my employer (snicker snicker)…I would make the decision that is best for me and my fam. Sympathy from others or not.

He's done, and he knows it...
Yet, he still bats third for a team that was hoping to be competitive.

Damn straight.

This works in theory
but the Cubs have no one in the system or on the bench to play 1B. Next year is likely an FA or having Colvin who played it in College relearn it. Not like you are going to bring Hoff up to play 1B.

For the production Lee gives from 1B
You could get that for less money on the market. Someone like Adam Dunn is better as a DH, but I’m sure other cheaper options might be available.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
Then...
Let’s start having Colvin learn it NOW. So we can see if he can do it next year before missing out on possible acquisitions. Also, if we are SO sure that Hoff can’t do it, then release, trade, give him away. He is clogging up the works at 1b in Iowa right now, and we need to start developing someone at that position. Otherwise, what use does he have?
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah." - Abe Simpson
Counterpoint
Colvin is a better option in the outfield out there. It’s not so easy for players to adjust to new positions. I like him playing right field.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
I have no problem with him staying in the outfield
Just responding to other’s ideas about him playing first base. IF he could do it, however, and IF he likes it, then it may be easier to find alternatives to the outfield than finding new players for first.
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah." - Abe Simpson
Maybe he has his reasons
I would rather trade Lee as well, but it’s his right to exercise the NTC because he did sign that contract.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
I love DLee.

Ha ha. It's OK. My little girl likes him, and that's good enough for me!
She especially likes the way he cares for his own little daughter!

He’s a backup catcher and plays great defense. I don’t know what we all want out of him.

9 of his last 11 at bats. On the other hand he has thrown out 4 of 26 runners. I’d guess he looking forward to arbitration.
