Think the Cubs could get them interested in Ryan Theriot?

Hopefully

Do I need to say more? Nothing personal, but he won’t be around next year anyway. Might as well see if we can get any kind of a prospect in return.

We would have to pay the salary but I would probably do it for

In that ballpark

Theriot could triple his HR totals by the end of the season

Ryan would also be closer to home

I just don't buy that "closer to home" argument...

… unless you are being sent to the actual city where you live in the offseason.

Dallas is about 500 miles from Theriot’s home in Louisiana. Chicago is about 900. For the purposes of a baseball player, really, what would the difference be?

Exactly my point.

You can drive that difference of 400 miles in… oh, about seven hours, making sure you leave time to stop and pee. And put gas in your car, if you need to.

Or you can fly it in about an hour. After you have spent time going through airport security, waiting for flight delays, and having the airlines lose your luggage.

I repeat: unless a player lives in the same metropolitan area as he plays in, “closer to home” is 99.9% irrelevant.

As close to home without sending him to division rivals

I should have clarified that. I remember that Will Clark signed with the Texas Rangers years ago because he wanted to play for a team that was closer to his home.

Well, we've got three dealable second basemen...

…and the Rangers have an awesome farm system. So it seems like Jimbo should at least try something.

Sounds like we should show all 3 like cards to the Rangers and say

Pick One. We may need to add a please with that.

This could get sad

By game time tmrw, everyone will just want a trade. Any trade as long as it provides something new to talk about.

Or...

We could throw in our AWESOME backup catcher to sweeten the deal. What GM would turn their noses up at that?

Ron Santo - 8,143 ABs, .277 BA; 342 HR; 1331 RBI = NO Hall of Fame?

Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.

Any more questions ?

Rangers have the 2nd best system in the majors

Behind the Rays.

I’m sure we could get a A+ or AA player for Theriot

I would think Fontenot would be more marketable at this point

And it’s clear that the Cubs want nothing to do with him anymore. Maybe we could trade them both Baker and Fontenot and they could have a new 2B platoon

by HuskerCorner on Jul 29, 2010 1:38 PM CDT reply actions

Fontenot would be more marketable if our manager actually put him in the lineup.

I think plenty of teams know what Fontenot brings to the table at this point

Unless he was going to all of the sudden develop a power stroke, or steal umpteen bases, his not playing shouldn’t actually hurt his trade value.

by HuskerCorner on Jul 29, 2010 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey, hey, hey - he has a power stroke.

It’s just a sneaky one.

You can't keep all that aggression bottled up forever.

It’s bound to come out a couple of times a year.

As funny as it was to see Riot’s homer in Houston, it was a little underwhelming even so. He hit the ball , barely made it to the Crawford Boxes. I can’t imagine there are many places easier to hit a homer in the ML.

What if they agree to deal, but...

they charge us X amount of cash per TOOTBLAN? We’d have to pass.

Sure would be a lot more fun watching him do that on the opposing team.
