The All-Canada Show: Cubs vs. Rockies Preview, Friday 7/30, 8:10 CT

Photo

More on the pitchers after the jump, but this is the first-ever matchup as starters of these two pitchers born in British Columbia, Canada. (Dempster appeared in relief in a game Francis started at Wrigley Field on September 30, 2006.

Other than that, it's status quo tonight.

One more miscellaneous note about tonight's game: since the Cubs and Rockies are playing only five games this season, if the Cubs win tonight they'll clinch the season series -- since they won both games in Chicago in May.

2010 - Jeff Francis 3-3 13 13 0 0 0 0 75.0 82 40 38 4 18 44 4.56 1.33

This is an unknown pitching matchup -- Ryan Dempster has made two starts vs. Colorado since returning to the rotation in 2008, one that year and one last year; Jeff Francis hasn't started against the Cubs since 2008. Current Cubs are hitting .338 (23-for-68) against Francis with three home runs; current Rockies only .150 (6-for-40) vs. Dempster with only one XBH (a HR by Clint Barmes, of all people). In short, this could be a 1-0 game... or one of those 13-12 Coors Field specials.

Tonight's game is on WGN and FSN Rocky Mountain. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Somewhat OT...

Went out to eat Wed night and Sox-Mariners game was on the big screen. Thankfully it was on mute, but they did have the closed-captioning thing going. Not exactly sure how that works but obviously there’s always a bit of a delay.

Anyway, between chicken wings, I’m watching and see that Mariners have runners on 1st n 3rd. Buehrle picks runner off 1st so now there’s a rundown between 1st n 2nd. Runner on 3rd waits and then takes off, Ramirez throws badly to home, and runner scores.

Naturally the closed-captioning is a bit behind, so I’m able to read where Steve Stone says something about lack of fundamentals and poor execution (btw – he sounds pompous on cc too). Harrelson chimes in with something like "That’s a terrible play… " and then nothing.

There’s at least 5-10 seconds of dead air – or dead screen in this case – and then slowly I see “Dag gum…” appear on the screen. Don’t know if they use a software application or if it’s an actual human transcribing in real time, but I about spit up a chicken wing laughing at the thought of someone (or something) having to translate that jibberish all night long…

I love watching closed captioning when they can’t quite figure out what the people are saying. The device used for that is similar to what’s used by a court reporter for transcribing courtroom dialogue. But sometimes… TV people say weird stuff. Like, for example, what you heard.

The Cubs assign managers to their minor league teams; the minor league teams themselves don’t hire them, so I assume they get paid by the major league Cubs.

At my workplace

the policy is to use some discretion based on the situation. E.g., closeness of the particular relative, travel needs, responsibilities, etc. An uncle could be like a 2nd father, or a near-stranger, or anything in between.

We appreciate it, because not all bereavements are created equal.

Sorry but THREE days is A LOT

Where does the Uncle live Europe? Would a manager in the heat of a race take 3 days off for this? I don’t have a problem with one day but in this day and age it is not that hard to get to and from a funeral in a day. I am happy he won’t be there to manage but I do think it shows a lack of commitment. Sick child should get you all the time you need, but not this.

You know, you really have to temper your hatred of Lou.

Give the guy a break. Someone in his family died; maybe he was close. And yes, in the heat of a race, you do it.

It may take a day’s worth of travel, a day there, and a day back. You really think he should fly there in the morning, go to the funeral, then fly right back?

You really are callous. If it were Sam Fuld’s uncle, you probably would say, “Go!”

Oh cut the Fuld stuff out

I would question any player or manager taking that much time off for something besides a close relative being ILL.
and I say again he would not have done this if the Cubs were in the race. Now you can certainly argue since the Cubs are out of it, why not let him have an extra day for a funeral, but I feel players and managers should still play and manage as if they were IN a race and give 100% all of the time. To be fair a lot of the Cubs will by physically present at the 3 games, but no more involved in them than Lou hundreds or thousands of miles away.

I should never look a gift horse in the mouth though. Take an extra 2 months to grieve Lou.

It was when Doggie herself says she knew that Lou was a cruddy manager

Which has now clouded her judgment to the point that she’s willing to take a swipe at him regardless of the situation, personal or otherwise. So it seems like it has everything to do with it.

by shoemile on Jul 30, 2010 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, now I see your point.

Yes, clearly that game has colored her opinion of Lou. My point was that it shouldn’t in this case, because this situation has nothing to do with baseball.

What does that have to do

with her comments? Nothing!!

Her comments were directed personally at Lou and had nothing to do with his managing!

FWIW, I’ve seen quite a few games since the 60s. Yes, I’m an old broad and I’m proud of it.

That is all.

by Swoosie on Jul 30, 2010 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

It is not a lot in the "regular" world

but baseball is NOT the regular world. Players and managers do NOT take 3 days off in other than execptional circumstances and many of those involve having the player placed on bereavement list. For all the money baseball is a hard life and you have to make a lot of personal sacrifices one of which is you do NOT get to take the same amount of time off as people in other jobs because there is no simple replacement for you. You can NOT compare baseball to a regular orginization.

As for my loathing of Lou’s managing, I wonder how many people would jump all over Z if ( when he was actually pitching well) he said he had to go to funeral in Latin America and it would cost him a crucail start. HE would be ripped for that if people thought it might effect the Cubs winning an important game. Here everyone gets a pass because the games are meamingless but the situation is the same. You need to behave as if you ARE in a race and act accordingly.

I know players go on the bereavement list when they have a major family situation

That was the point. It is serious thing to take any major time off in baseball which is why that system was set up and why baseball is DIFFERENT from an ordinary job. It is not the same as taking time off from 9-5 job.

The bereavement list is a set up

specifically for players ( it really would not effect coaches or managers) who need to take MORE than a few days off it and it allows the team to replace them on the roster.

I work at a hospital.

Simply put, there is no day off from work there. I got back after my vacation last week, and immediately got hit with what may have been the busiest work week I’ve ever had to go through. I got off three hours ago, but I’m more tired than I care to admit.

When my grandfather died in May 2009, people at work made sure I was covered in my work shifts. One co-worker took a weekend that I was supposed to work, and I found out he had died the Friday before the Saturday I was on the schedule.

It doesn’t matter how much different baseball is than everything else. Is there any reason why the players or managers should not be allowed to grieve like everyone else?

I know you don’t like Lou, but don’t you think you’re overstating it a little bit?

It's true

I hate Lou so much I want him to miss a funeral. I have attacked every move he ever made as a Cub. He has never made a single move I approved of and when I posted that he did I was under the influence of drugs. He was even responsible for my getting into a similar exchange years ago about Shawn Green when he decided to take one game of DH off for Yom Kippur. In fact every time I criticize any player about anything it is really all about Lou.
