Get it done, Jim! Does anyone think we can pay their salaries and recieve possibly Jerry Sands and a lower prospect? Or is that unrealistic, Al?

Was just about to post this...

… so thanks for doing it.

Don’t know anything about Jerry Sands. The link says the Dodgers would install Theriot at 2B and “possibly” send Blake DeWitt to Triple-A.

I like DeWitt. He can play 2B and 3B and won’t be 25 until next month. Maybe the Cubs could get him as part of this deal.

That wouldn't make much sense though

Dewitt is almost a clone copy of Theriot, without TOOTBLANS and who can walk. Why would the Dodger want to replace him?

i've gotten the impression

over the last couple of years that the dodgers just don’t like dewitt that much. no idea why.

by circuitclout on Jul 30, 2010 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

DeWitt is better than Theriot...

He’s a better hitter (not a great hitter, but better than Theriot), and he’s as good a fielder at 2B. And he’s cheaper than Theriot.

by SouthernCub on Jul 30, 2010 8:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

It’s more understandable if the Cubs asked for DeWitt in a package for Lilly, and then offered Theriot as a short-term replacement (who actually might back up Carroll). But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t they offer Fontenot instead? I haz confuzed myself.

Somebody take Aramis' bat off the restricted list, please.

sands

here’s a scouting report from from john sickels at minor league ball.

i feel like if the dodgers were willing to deal him at this point that it would probably be an indication that you don’t really want him.

by circuitclout on Jul 30, 2010 8:44 AM CDT reply actions

There are some real caveats in that scouting report.

Looks good, but there are some caution signs.

Looking at this deal

not sure why the Dodgers want this – DeWitt seems to be the same (hitting wise) as Theriot – so unless they want him to work on something or think that Dodgers Stadium will be better for Theriot than Wrigley – not sure why you want Theriot but if the cubs can save some $$$$ by moving Theriot now I am all for it

DeWitt is a better hitter than Theriot actually...

So I’m really not sure why they’d want Theriot either.

this would make since if the Cubs want Dewitt

he’s only 25, and actually has a lot more upside than Theriot…The Riot is what he is. Maybe the Dodgers are willing to part with him to get the Cubs to pay some of the Money Lilly is owed.

by wfree0104 on Jul 30, 2010 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

Seeing it as

Lilly himself should fetch a player in return worth talking about. With Theriot in this picture, it depends, or will probably depend, on how much emphasis is put on dumping salary vs acquiring talent.

Dodger Stadium should be a good ballpark for Lilly.

Sometimes I just wish the Cubs would keep Lilly and focus on trading Zambrano and Silva, but that’s a tall order. In the paper they said the Cubs probably didn’t offer Lilly enough to stay.

I realize the Dodgers might have some cash flow issues...

but please, they should be grateful to get Lilly and even Theriot for that matter, without asking for cash too.

Dodgers talking to Cubs about a multi-player deal that would include Lilly and a position player (probably not Theriot).

Lilly to the Cards?

I’d see if the Cards would be interested in a Lilly for Allen Craig swap. Craig seems to be major league ready, but blocked at his best position by Albert (who will NOT be leaving St. Louis any time soon!) The Cubs would get a young guy who could get his feet wet this season and compete for the 1B job next year. Lilly would give the Cards a solid #4 starter down the stretch.

by tom veryzer on Jul 30, 2010 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

that could be like the lou brock trade

only in our favor this time. Except Lilly is Lilly and not Broglio. And there probably won’t be another Lou Brock…but still could be good for us.

by portlandcubfan on Jul 30, 2010 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

It would be nice to get rid of Theriot.

I just hope they get someone worth something for Lilly. They should be able to get something worthwhile beyond moving his salary.

will Theriot be included? How much money will Cubs play? And the most important to me..who are we getting?

by Ryno G on Jul 30, 2010 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

cubs want dewitt or johnson for theriot

dbacks want theriot and russell for johnson
http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/1789/cubs-suffer-a-loss-for-the-ages

The Dodgers would like to obtain both Lilly and second baseman Ryan Theriot. The Cubs have asked for second baseman Blake DeWitt back as part of any trade. The Dodgers have no money to take on the contracts of Lilly and Theriot due to the pending divorce between the team’s owners. Dodger GM Ned Colletti is doing his best to be creative to try to make this deal happen.

The Cubs also have a possible deal with Arizona for second baseman Kelly Johnson. The Diamondbacks have asked for Ryan Theriot and left-handed pitcher James Russell in return.

by jesus christos on Jul 31, 2010 12:55 AM CDT reply actions

I'd rather get

DeWitt for Theriot than Johnson, just based on contract. It would be kind of odd for the Cubs to trade Theriot for an expiring contract, unless they had some very low-cost extension agreed to.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 31, 2010 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Johnson's contract isn't expiring

He signed as a free agent, but with less than 6 years service time. So he is still team-controlled through 2011, but subject to arbitration.

Somebody take Aramis' bat off the restricted list, please.

by cubzfan on Jul 31, 2010 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

That's the only risk here.

Kelly Johnson is making $2.35 million this year. He’s having a really good year and might be in line for a pretty substantial raise through arb.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Jul 31, 2010 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

but if he gets a raise it’s just a signal that we got a more valuable player. Considering the money wasted on the likes of John Grabow et al, a raise to Johnson seems like money well spent. This year isn’t really much outside his other years (other than a bad 2008), so he might be the real deal.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 31, 2010 8:37 AM CDT up reply actions

more valuable player?

what?

arbitration figures aren’t done on what a players likely to produce in the future, they’re done based largely off of historical production and comps for that production

his arb figure has no bearing on how valuable he actually is going forward. In addition a higher figure only makes him more difficult to move (as we’ve seen small amounts of dollars make a big deal in this economy for baseball teams)

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 31, 2010 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

"More valuable" is a low standard here

Since a broken fungo bat may be more valuable than Ryan Theriot and due for more in arbitration…..

by ClarkFan on Jul 31, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not here to argue

I didn’t make any sweeping generalizations about arbitration figures implying anything about future performance.

My point was that we will be paying more for Johnson next year, but we’re getting a better player, so it’s worth the money.

If you don’t think Johnson is a more valuable player than Theriot, then I don’t know what to tell you.

If you just want to argue because I disagreed with something you said the other day, then either drop your ego or find someone else to argue with, because I’m not interested.

your statement is wrong

“but if he gets a raise it’s just a signal that we got a more valuable player.”

a raise is no indication of his actual value going forward

dont know why you just cant accept that

I wonder

if the Dodgers would take Johnson instead of Theriot (if we made the D-Backs deal first) in exchange for a bigger return.

Not sure why the Dodgers are so keen on Theriot. I’d like Johnson at 2B next year, but it depends on what the Dodgers are offering in their deal.

Latest on this from Jayson Stark:

Sounds like #Cubs likely to send both Lilly & Theriot to #Dodgers. Doesn’t sound like Manny’s heading for either side of Chicago. #trades
