Maybe some stars*** and a few exclamation points!!!!
Proud recipient of a hot dog shot from the Iowa Cubs hot dog gun.
That Works!
The guy simply pitches poorly for the Cubs. Why do they keep bringing him back? At least Harold Baines was a good player that the White Sox kept bringing back.

"Keep" bringing him back?
They only brought him back once (this year).

That Was Too Many
It seems like it was more than once. Let’s not make it twice.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I suspect Howry was going to retire after this year anyway.

This seemed really, really likely after Howry's last MLB appearance.
That was the equivalent of seeing the last play of Steve Young’s career – everyone is left battered and dizzy, and you kind of knew it was all over.
Now we just need to see Shark replacing Schlitter, and we can coast until roster expansion.

Seriously? Shark? But why?

Any more questions ?

He's killing it at Iowa.
May as well see if he has anything to offer at the MLB level during a lost season. After all, they’re paying him all that money, and it’s not like Schlitter has anything whatsoever to offer at this point.
RIght now, Shark is 7-1, 2.64, striking out a batter an inning in AAA, primarily as a reliever, although he’s made 7 starts. Walking too many people, but it’s not as if everyone in our entire bullpen after Marmol and Marshall are sporting a 6+ ERA or anything.

Shark is great pitcher!
Why else would you give a person who had never thrown a pro pitch a no trade clause?
Jh is amazing!
Tell me about it...
…please he gave him 10mil

I still think...
…there is going to be a major change at the top of the baseball organization before the Cubs open the 2011 season.
That will either be Hendry simply being replaced, or Ricketts hiring a head of baseball operations to baby sit Hendry and then likely fire him and bring in his own guy when his contract is up.

I wish I could believe this. I just don't know why you think it.

It's part gut feel...
…and also reading between the lines in the press conference a few weeks ago.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
man, you must have REALLY been reading between the lines
cuz I saw no real indication that Ricketts has anything but absolute trust in Jim

Saying...
…“he will go into next season as the GM” is not really a big vote of confidence in my book.
I guess I am also hoping that Ricketts is smart enough to realize he desperately needs someone to instill a new culture and baseball philosophy from the top down.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I can see that "read between the lines"...
… but if he were going to do anything, wouldn’t it make sense to do it sooner than next winter? Or not give Hendry that vote of confidence?
It seems clear that Hendry will hire the next manager. That’s a major decision already only his.

Sorry TJ, show's over
The magic is gone – your willingness to part with Big Z was your downfall. You were good, kid, but sometimes being good just isn’t good enough…
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I would very sadly let him go, despite his entertainment value, if it helps the team get better!
We can get another pitcher, but Giant Z could never be replaced in our hearts….
well, because we have a lot of money invested in him
he also still has a pretty live arm and it would be one last attempt to see if he’s going to be anything.
Schlitter is………………………………………………………….schlitty

Is this the "one last time" for now...or the "one last time" until next time? He sucks...time to move on.

As was demonstrated above, he hasn't sucked at Iowa
so you give him another shot. It hurts NOTHING at this point. You’d like to see Schlitter and his 10+ ERA continue to pitch out of what? Spite?
by HuskerCorner on Jul 30, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions
No...not Schlitter, either. That all the pitchers we have down there. They brought Cashner up ...
and he’s not ready yet. Why not try someone else?

Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.

Cashner isn't ready??
He’s had one or two bad outings and pitched very well otherwise.
He's got a 100 MPH fastball...that's it. Ask Konerko or Berkman how well they like those.

Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.
Any more questions ?
So he isn't ready because he pitches 100 MPH
And gave up Homeruns to a couple of very good power hitters?
Mmmkay.
No...he gave up HRs to power hitters in game deciding instances, becaiuse, he has nothing else to give them

Any more questions ?
He's actually got more than just a fastball
Feel free to look up his scouting report.
Looks like Berkman is off to the Yankees - one less slugger to worry about.

Apparently not.

Never understood why we signed Howry this year in the first place.
He sucks. Period.

Ballhawk will again be the only person sorry to see this happen
and probably not even him. This time round Howry just gave up bunched of hits Vs the usual gopher balls.
"Lou Piniella's been a great manager for a long time and I stand by him completely"
Jim Hendry
Well I did NOT see this coming!
He has been pitching so well and had been a feather in Hendry’s cap all season!
I guess Giant Z had to rejoin the team. But at what cost!
I just know a contending team will snatch Howry up for the stretch run!
Well Cub fans there we have it! The big move we have been waiting days for!
Glad Howry is gone
but not sure I’m glad Z is back.
A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.
The end
those are tough shoes to fill (Howry).
I hope Z can handle the pressure. Can we set the expectations any lower?

20.2 innings with the Cubs this time around...
…and only 2 homers allowed *. Yeah, I guess it’s time for Bobby to hang ’em up. Us ballhawks are sure gonna miss him.
( * although that last one to Howard was almost long enough to count twice…)

I love the ads on BCB sometimes, although I don't think this is true...

What is a horse shoe? What does a horse shoe do? Are there any horse socks? Is anybody listening to me?
I'd rather have Howry than Zambrano

Remember when that fan rushed the field to attack Bob Howry
and that pint-sized security dude shot at him like a missile and took him down on the infield grass?
That was awesome.

The Howry era is over!
Or is it???
"I knew there had to be a place where the game could be fun again. I found that place. It's called Wrigley Field. It reminded that if you love the game, it will love you back." - Andre Dawson, HOF speech 7/25/10
There may be a reason for it...
but the passive language MLB uses for giving a guy a pink slip is a little humorous but mostly sad.
Howry was “granted” his release…
As if 1)the Cubs weren’t the agent of the action, and 2)as if they’re giving Howry something of value….
He'll finish the year with a 5.66 Cub ERA
Allowing 50% of inherited baserunners to score.
He entered games with runners on base 5 times. Each of those times, there were 2 runners on base, on 1st and 2nd.
On the first 4 of those occasions, he allowed at least 1 inherited runner to score.
The 4th time, he allowed both runners to score. (Of course, they were already trailing by 8, so who cares.)
I’m just happy that the PHI meltdown and his final outing blasted his “Cub ERA” all to hell – he was allowing half of his inherited runners to score, and just generally being a lousy relief pitcher while taking up a roster spot that would have been better used elsewhere.
The other time, the 4th of July, he got the third out, stranding the runners.

Should pitch for the Home Run Derby before the All-Star Game. Sometimes skills and tasks just line up perfectly.
