Howry no longer a Cub

Until Hendry picks him up next year, I mean.

Nah.

Howry’s got enough time for his pension — he’s no Chad Fox.

HOWRY RELEASED

how’s that?

That Works!

The guy simply pitches poorly for the Cubs. Why do they keep bringing him back? At least Harold Baines was a good player that the White Sox kept bringing back.

"Keep" bringing him back?

They only brought him back once (this year).

That Was Too Many

It seems like it was more than once. Let’s not make it twice.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I suspect Howry was going to retire after this year anyway.

This seemed really, really likely after Howry's last MLB appearance.

That was the equivalent of seeing the last play of Steve Young’s career – everyone is left battered and dizzy, and you kind of knew it was all over.

Now we just need to see Shark replacing Schlitter, and we can coast until roster expansion.

I still think...

…there is going to be a major change at the top of the baseball organization before the Cubs open the 2011 season.

That will either be Hendry simply being replaced, or Ricketts hiring a head of baseball operations to baby sit Hendry and then likely fire him and bring in his own guy when his contract is up.

It's part gut feel...

…and also reading between the lines in the press conference a few weeks ago.

man, you must have REALLY been reading between the lines

cuz I saw no real indication that Ricketts has anything but absolute trust in Jim

Sounds an awful lot like...

hey TJ, are you Ricketts?

Saying...

…“he will go into next season as the GM” is not really a big vote of confidence in my book.

I guess I am also hoping that Ricketts is smart enough to realize he desperately needs someone to instill a new culture and baseball philosophy from the top down.

I can see that "read between the lines"...

… but if he were going to do anything, wouldn’t it make sense to do it sooner than next winter? Or not give Hendry that vote of confidence?

It seems clear that Hendry will hire the next manager. That’s a major decision already only his.

well, because we have a lot of money invested in him

he also still has a pretty live arm and it would be one last attempt to see if he’s going to be anything.

As was demonstrated above, he hasn't sucked at Iowa

so you give him another shot. It hurts NOTHING at this point. You’d like to see Schlitter and his 10+ ERA continue to pitch out of what? Spite?

by HuskerCorner on Jul 30, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

No...not Schlitter, either. That all the pitchers we have down there. They brought Cashner up ...

and he’s not ready yet. Why not try someone else?

He’s had one or two bad outings and pitched very well otherwise.

He's got a 100 MPH fastball...that's it. Ask Konerko or Berkman how well they like those.

There may be a reason for it...

but the passive language MLB uses for giving a guy a pink slip is a little humorous but mostly sad.

Howry was “granted” his release…

As if 1)the Cubs weren’t the agent of the action, and 2)as if they’re giving Howry something of value….

by CubsWin!Oregon on Jul 30, 2010 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

He'll finish the year with a 5.66 Cub ERA

Allowing 50% of inherited baserunners to score.

He entered games with runners on base 5 times. Each of those times, there were 2 runners on base, on 1st and 2nd.

On the first 4 of those occasions, he allowed at least 1 inherited runner to score.

The 4th time, he allowed both runners to score. (Of course, they were already trailing by 8, so who cares.)

I’m just happy that the PHI meltdown and his final outing blasted his “Cub ERA” all to hell – he was allowing half of his inherited runners to score, and just generally being a lousy relief pitcher while taking up a roster spot that would have been better used elsewhere.

The other time, the 4th of July, he got the third out, stranding the runners.
