Cubs To Make First-Ever Regular Season Visit To Fenway Park In May 2011

A first draft of the 2011 MLB schedule -- not anywhere near finalized -- was shared with ESPNBoston.com recently.

Buried in that link is this nugget:

The [Red] Sox are scheduled to play teams from all three National League divisions in interleague play. The Chicago Cubs are scheduled to visit May 20-22, Milwaukee is in June 17-19, followed by San Diego June 20-22.

Presuming this schedule holds -- and I don't see any reason it wouldn't, with this many details having leaked already -- that will be the Cubs' first regular season visit to Fenway Park and first since they played Red Sox in the 1918 World Series.

The only MLB game I've managed to go to since moving to Germany in '77 was in Boston.

The ballpark, this was about 20 years ago, reminded me a bit of Wrigley Field. The same tradition drenched atmosphere.

I was at Fenway in 1983.

I know they’ve made quite a number of upgrades since then. But I enjoyed that day — it wound up being a doubleheader because the day before was rained out.

I've been to Fenway a couple of times,

the most recent in 2007. It’s cool because of what it is, but frankly, it’s a dump. Wrigley Field is a Taj Mahal by comparison.

I’d be tempted to go to this series, but it’s going to be a madhouse (and the small seats at Fenway are a real challenge if you’re 6-foot-7, 230 lbs.), so I’ll have to live it vicariously through you and the other Cubs fans likely to be there. Should be fun.

There's a lot about the Cubs not winning that inspires people to look for answers

I remember during the 2008 season, someone brought up the hundredth anniversary of the Merkle Game. People made a big deal about a broken bat going in the direction of second base during the 100th anniversary of the game at Shea and people talked about the Curse of Fred Merkle.

I think that the Cubs can't win a World Series at Wrigley Field

because there was a seminary on the site before the ballpark was built and Somebody upstairs never liked His consecrated land being used for something as secular as baseball. As good a theory as any.

It's not that they were caught.

Players had been caught, or suspected of, throwing games for years. The difference with the 1909 Sox was that it blew up in the press and the courts so that baseball HAD to do something about it. Comiskey himself tried to avoid doing anything about it until forced too and then he worked very hard to cover himself. Very much like the steroid scandal of recent history. Baseball aggressively swept the problem under the rug for many, many years. Also, if memory serves, the whole subject of the 1919 Sox came up because a Chicago grand jury was investigating the Cubs of 1918 and other fixed game allegations. They hadn’t been convened specifically to review the Sox case.

Researching the 1919 Black Sox,

I went through the new boxes of court testimony and other materials at the Chicago History Museum. Sox pitcher Ed Cicotte of the Sox testified that they got the idea of throwing the 1919 Series because they had heard that certain Cubs made some pretty good money throwing the 1918 Series.

Ruth had an awesome series, throwing 16 consecutive scoreless innings. (Same source as my post above.)

The 1918 World Series

Chicago (NL) played its games at Comiskey to take advantage of more seating. It was not played at Weeghman Park (Wrigley Field). No World Series games were played at Wrigley Field until October 8, 1929.

Oddly enough...

… had they played the 1918 WS at Weeghman Park, the crowds that showed up would have easily fit there. WP had a capacity of about 22,000 (the upper deck was not built until the 1920’s). Game 1 of the 1918 WS drew 19,274; Game 2 drew 20,040.

The Orioles fans I worked with were starting to get pretty disgusted, though. They hadn’t had a winning season in, what, six years? And they were getting kind of tired of the ballpark being the only reason for going to a game. (This sounded very familiar to me.) That’s how I got tickets to one of the games. A business associate shared a season ticket package with a couple other people and he was using more tickets for business purposes than for himself and family. We got tickets at the gate for the other one we went to.

Sorry. I was kind of a joke.

We used to live in PA and East Coast friends would say something like, “Going to see the Sox at Fenway this weekend,” and having a Chicago chip on my shoulder I would respond, “Oh? I didn’t know the White Sox were playing in Boston this week.”

LOL.

I do that all the time.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Updated information.

Courtesy of baseball historian Ed Hartig, this will be the Cubs’ first regular-season visit to play the Red Sox, but NOT their first visit ever:

The Cubs have played 12 regular season games at Fenway Park, going 4-8 against the Boston Braves in 1914-15.

Cubs Played Miracle Braves at Fenway in 1914

1914 was one of only 2 pennant winning seasons for the Braves in Boston. The other was 1948.

Speaking of the 1918 World Series

The 1906, 1907 and 1918 World Series are the only Series to not have a homerun which is interesting.

I've been to Fenway many times

I’ve done a lot of business in Boston and think Fenway is an outstanding place to see a game. Wrigley and Fenway are 1 and 1A in my book. Hard to choose between them. I happened to be in Boston in 2004 the night they clinched the WS. I went to the CaskNFlagon the next day which is the equivalent of Murphy’s Bleachers. The mood was eerily silent. The fans were so shell shocked that they finally one everyone was just shaking their head and smiling. It was surreal and all I could thinks a bout was the same thing someday happening to the Cubs.

Wow yes it would !!

I was reading in the Boston blogs yesterday . They thought the Ticket brokers would be charging about $ 120.00 per ticket . ( For the Cubs-Red sox game ) …. We had thought if they played in Baltimore it might be worth the trip . ( And much less in fact ) .

LOdging and meals in Boston can really set you back alot . Figure in travel and a few brews it’s a small fortune ……

This is great news!

Two of the most storied franchises in the MLB finally getting to play each other again. This is great for the fans. Too bad getting tickets will be next to impossible.

You're silly. Donating both kidneys would kill you!

1 kidney and 1 lung would be a healthier choice.

Being a Cub fan is more fatal than losing two kidneys

With out looking up
Can we all come up with the oldest to newest ball parks? Oldest is Fenway, Wrigley KC? After these parks I draw a blank. So many newer parks over the last 20 years or less.

Go Cubs!

Third oldest is Dodger Stadium.

Fourth oldest, Skydome.

Fifth oldest, the Cell.

Fifth Oldest Is the Cell

That’s true but hard to believe at the same time. To think that ballpark is not even 20 years old and that it is the fifth oldest is mind-boggling. I suppose 20-year old stadia are “ancient” by today’s standards.

Next oldest is Camden Yards...

… the first of the retro parks, which is almost 20 years old itself (1992).

what about Anaheim? I think their stadium is older than the Skydome

Just have to keep an eye on it I guess

My family and I were able to get tickets over the Boston Marathon weekend in 2008. Not the greatest matchup, but for a lot of marathoners and their families the Sunday game was their best chance to get to a game, especially if they came in from out of town like us. It will be a hot ticket thats for sure.
