Ted Lilly, Hitless Wonder: Cubs vs. Dodgers Preview, Friday 7/9, 9:10 CT

Lou teaches umpire Hunter Wendelstedt how to say, "Look, what do you want me to do?"

It's not just a season for Ted Lilly to get no hitting support from his teammates -- he is now last in the major leagues among qualified starters in run support (2.4 per start). He's not helping himself, either.

Ted Lilly is 0-for-23 this season.

There are now 60 player-seasons since 1901 (including Lilly) where a player has 23 or more at-bats without a hit.

All but three are pitchers.

Larry Littleton of the Indians, a backup OF, was 0-for-23 in 1981. Jason Smith of the Astros (former Cub!), a backup IF, was 0-for-25 last year.

And Hal Finney, a backup catcher for the 1936 Pirates, was 0-for-35 -- the biggest 0-fer for a position player.

Lilly could move rapidly up this list. An 0-for-3 tonight would result in 0-for-26 -- only 37 others have done this, including Sandy Koufax in 1957.

Here's the list of all 59 players who have accomplished this in full seasons through 2009. Actually, I'd love it if Ted got off this list tonight -- and maybe hit his first major league home run (he does have one triple, which he hit last year).

Tonight's lineup via tweet from Carrie:

#cubs lineup fri is rf fuke, 2b riot, 1b lee, 3b ramy, cf byrd, lf colvin, ss font, c hill, p lilly

2010 - Chad Billingsley 6-4 15 15 0 0 0 0 88.2 92 44 40 7 30 80 4.06 1.38

Chad Billingsley struggled against the Cubs on May 26 at Wrigley Field, allowing ten hits in 5.1 innings, including a HR by Xavier Nady. However, Tom Gorzelanny chose that day to have his worst start of the year and the Cubs lost 8-5. The Cub who hits Billingsley best is, oddly, Ryan Theriot (6-for-11, .545, but all singles).

Ted Lilly threw seven shutout innings vs. the Dodgers at Wrigley Field on May 27, allowing only three singles and three walks. A repeat of that performance would be nice tonight. Current Dodgers are hitting .202 (26-for-129) off Ted, but with six homers.

He’s not in any danger of getting worn out. This is ridiculous with him.

Facts.

Soto has started 61 games, Hill 25, before tonight.

That is an insanely high number for Hill

Especially when Soto has consistently had the highest OBP on the team. Lou must not like him because he draws to many walks.

"Insanely high"?

It would wind up with your backup catcher starting about 45 games. That’s not unreasonable.

With your "real" catcher

being you top OBP guy , the “backup” should not play more than 1 in 5
but he is playing almost one about every 3 and a half games.. It is just stupid how Lou has wasted Soto.

stop trying to hunt for any reason to bash Lou

it is actually SMART by Lou, since this will help reduce the risk of Soto having back/knee problems from a lost season.

plus playing your starting catcher 120 games is realistic, 140 would be similar to asking your starter to throw 175 pitches

No I would not

140 is not unreasonable for a good starting catcher. 160 not so much. The season was NOT lost in April & May etc when Lou was sitting Soto the hottest hitter down. There is no excuse for keeping your best OBP out of the lineup for more than one in 5 games if he is catcher.
In constantly letting Theriot lead off, "resting " Soto , inexplicable bullpen moves, I have plenty of things to “bash” Lou for. He is a flat out terrible manager this year and there were plenty of signs of this in his previous 3 years.

Buhl

I thought Bob Buhl was the worst hitter I’d ever seen. Glad to see he has the honor of going 0 fer in 1962. I seem to remember him being thrown out at 1st once on a single to right. I also remember (must’ve been in ’63) when he actually got a hit. A soft liner that hit the first base bag and bounded away enough for him to reach base.

Since Micah's name came up, I did a little research.......

2009 Hoff 56 Hits-234 AB .239 AVG 10 HR 35 RBI 20 BB 46 K 1 SB

2010 Lee 72 Hits-313 AB .230 AVG 10 HR 36 RBI 44 BB 79 K 1 SB

Oddly similar don’t you think?

If Lee was gone and Hoff was putting up those stats would he be batting 3rd everyday?

It also makes you think about what we are paying for at first when the AAA backup can do the same thing much cheaper.

Not saying the Hoff is better…..I don’t think he is…….But just throwing out some questions.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
