I liked Fontenot
Good luck to him at the Giants.

Good luck to him
Kind weird to get traded to the city you are visiting.

Thank heavens for Mike Fontenot

Apparently the Giants were desperate to avoid a repeat of last night!
Farewell Sneaky Hamster Power! Good luck in the other dugout.
Win.

At some point in the chain, we'll acquire a guy
who knows Kevin Bacon.

And we got who? Can this crawford guy hit for power and steel bases?

I always liked Fonty
but let the evolution of the new Cubs begin with Darwin ( who I assume is coming up). Let’s hope he does not miss his connection in MNPLS.

Saw Barny Saturday night
He’s ready to come up. He won’t learn anything else at AAA. TIme to see if he can hold down a spot next year. This might inflame some of you, but he’s clearly a much better fielder than Theriot, so I don’t see why he can’t be a utility guy. And, he showed some good instincts on the basepaths.
A SS/2B who does not TOOTBLAN is inconceivable!
You know there are only 100 people (tops) in the world who would know that means.

More than that...
There is a TOOTBLAN entry in the Urban Dictionary, which I shared with my Dodger fans when they acquired the human baserunning mistake.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
Evan Crawford
He’s basically a toolsy roll of the dice. Athlete, speedy, primarily plays CF. However, his tools haven’t exactly translated to production. He’s a 22 year old in Low A and not producing, so he’ll probably end up being organizational filler.
Considering I expected the Cubs to let Fontenot go for nothing, I’ll take it.
Goodbye, Little Babe Ruth...
I’ll miss you.

Good for him. Good luck.

Evan Crawford
just turned 22. He was drafted in the 9th round last year and here are his stats this year..
.255 avg with 12 doubles, 12 triples, 4 HRs, 29 RBI, and 24/33 SB in 109 games in Low A.
Did they call up anyone to replace him?
Best of luck to him. While he proved he’s not an every day player, he did a fine job as a utility IF and was a pretty effective pinch hitter for the Cubs.
I just hope they don’t need him tonight, given how thin the bench is already, unless they’ve already called up Barney or someone else.
by Mike Vails Evil Twin on Aug 11, 2010 7:44 PM CDT reply actions
I would guess they'll play one down tonight
and have the call-up, Barney presumably, meet them in STL tomorrow.
Shut up Joe Morgan.
He would be very lonely in STL tomorrow
since the Cubs are playing in SF. I would hope he would make in time for an afternoon game.

God Bless Mike Fontenot
Probably the best actor the Cubs had on the team (cameo on TBS sitcom "My Boys" in 2009).
This is killing Big Z and his pre-game ritual.
And Fontenot will probably hit a double into the corner tonight vs. the Cubs. Damn it.
"They come to see me strike out, hit a home run, or run into a fence. I try to accommodate them at least one way every game." - Gorman Thomas
Good luck to him.
The only pint-sized middle infielder we’ve had in the last two years that I didn’t hate.
"One of the things I like about baseball is that between innings you can go to the restroom.'' ~Manny Acta.
I hope Barney gets some starts
One thing I’ve worried about is Castro not getting any days off. Don’t want to burn him out this year. Moving Barney up gives you a guy on the roster that can really play SS.
I liked LBR
Don’t know why he was in Lou’s doghouse seemed to hit into gaps pretty well. Decent stats, decent PH>
Obviously Lou was incensed that Trammell was playing Fonty
called Hendry and demanded he be shipped out.

And the Cajun Connection is officially gone
Watch him get a pinch-hit game winner against Cubs tonight.
At least until Fuld is called up

Yeah, Iowa's gonna be drained, they'll all be with the Cubs

Actually I would not worry too much
Barney and Cashner are the only guys that could be gone. Hoff can probably stay if he want too ala Scales. Colvin & Castro were never there. Vitters, Jackson & Archer will probably be there.

And Ryno may not...
But Iowa will be fun to watch if they have a rotation of Archer Jackson and (hopefully) Cashner.
Cashner can stay down there.
Ron Santo - 8,143 ABs, .277 BA; 342 HR; 1331 RBI = NO Hall of Fame?
Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.
Any more questions ?
I'm glad for him...
Piniella did that guy wrong. Go get ’em, LBR!

How so?
He was below league average in 2007, well-below league average last year (in 400 PA) and below league average this year. He was a backup, and that’s how he got played. Losing a 30-year old that can only really play one position and with a career .330 wOBA is not a great loss. Lou didn’t misuse Fonty, the only problem is that the Cubs didn’t have a legitimate 2B all year.
Just because you don't have a legitmate 2B
Doesn’t justify playing even worse 2Bs ahead of him, especially when you have a potential platoon option as Lou did with Theriot.
No, Lou did the Cubs wrong.
Fontenot got his chances, so I don’t feel sorry for HIM. But Lou certainly should have played him more than Theriot this season for the sake of the team.
Yep
Fontenot got about what he deserved. Unfortunately when you have another guy getting unwarranted playing time it makes it look like Fontenot got jobbed. He probably deserved a straight platoon considering how bad Theriot is, but it’s not like the Cubs had a mini-Babe Ruth rotting on the bench… oh wait…….
Fontenot made a point of thanking Piniella after the trade
He said Lou was the one who gave him a chance to play in the bigs and he was glad to have known him.
"When they signed Fukudome, I knew they were trying to get me fired". - Ron Santo, January, 2008
So the Cajun Tigers (Theriot and Fontenot) are now rivals for the first time
One a Dodger, one a Giant.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
I'm happy for Fontenot
Considering I would have been happy if Hendry had gotten a post-game spread for the team from Portillo’s for Sammy Sosa, Fontenot’s time with the organization has easily been a net plus. He was a good soldier trying to play 3B last year even though we all knew he had no business there and that Hendry had messed up by not having a decent AAAA 3B at Iowa. Given that the Giants can play Uribe all around the infield, having Fontenot be primarily a 2B backup for them is fine.
The Crawford kid will probably wash out, but it’s not like Fontenot was going to be back next year. I hope that Barney and DeWitt split the last 35 games at 2B, with Barney also getting some starts at SS and DeWitt some at 3B.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
Hendry is cruel
Trading Theriot to the Dodgers and Fontenot to the Giants: It’s like he’s trying to create the cajun civil war.
After playing together at LSU and witht he Cubs, Theriot and Fontenot are required to hate each other.
They are also required to eat granola
and unbutton their shirts down to the navel off the field. They are California boys now.

really
From up close, the reality is. The Giants fans hate the Dodgers, and the Dodgers fans almost notice the Giants…almost.
"Wait, are you saying I'm a sunshine-pumping, koolaid-drinking, Soriano-loving, rainbow-rising, unicorn-riding, double-clutching, Sweet Lou-backing, Hendry-supporting, hey hey whaddya saying, Cubs are going all the waying, glass is overflowing, Rothschild is all-knowing, Cubs fan? - ballhawk
That's not been my experience
From sitting in the bleachers at Dodger Stadium. On top of that, didn’t a guy wearing a Giants jersey get murdered at Dodger Stadium a few years ago?
I know it’s cool for Dodger fans to pretend that they just don’t care about the other teams, but the reality is that Dodger fans really do hate the Giants.
Now outside of baseball, you might have a point. The LA/SF rivalry is very one-sided, with San Franciscans hating Los Angeles and Los Angelenos liking San Francisco and San Franciscans hating LA even more for liking them.

Having lived in LA...
…this post is spot on.
I saw Dodger fans throw full water bottles at Giants fans. It was pretty ugly.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Will miss him actually
He didn’t do much for the team but I got the opportunity to meet him back in 2008 and spend a few hours hanging out because of work. He was just a down-to-earth cool dude. He’ll do well wherever he goes because I can tell you that he’s the type of guy that will get along with anyone in a clubhouse.
Meh
Glad we got something out of him. He wasn’t a part of the future, so I’m glad he’s gone. Seemed like a nice enough guy but nothing to fret over. The 2011 job is between Dewitt and Barney.

Well I think meh is pretty fair.
I felt bad for him rotting on the bench and am glad he will get some playing time, but I would hope we actually get something from him or what exactly is the point? It’s not like huge salary relief is coming. I guess it’s something for him, let’s hope so.

If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
the good news in this one
Is that Grabow is out for the year.

Like he would cause this team to lose more?

He may not be the best player, but I would never be happy about an injury to any player on any team.

There goes one of the only Cubs players with an average above 280!
Maybe Bruce Bochy will use him correctly.
