I liked Fontenot

Good luck to him at the Giants.

Good luck to him

Kind weird to get traded to the city you are visiting.

Apparently the Giants were desperate to avoid a repeat of last night!

Farewell Sneaky Hamster Power! Good luck in the other dugout.

I always liked Fonty

but let the evolution of the new Cubs begin with Darwin ( who I assume is coming up). Let’s hope he does not miss his connection in MNPLS.

Saw Barny Saturday night

He’s ready to come up. He won’t learn anything else at AAA. TIme to see if he can hold down a spot next year. This might inflame some of you, but he’s clearly a much better fielder than Theriot, so I don’t see why he can’t be a utility guy. And, he showed some good instincts on the basepaths.

Evan Crawford

He’s basically a toolsy roll of the dice. Athlete, speedy, primarily plays CF. However, his tools haven’t exactly translated to production. He’s a 22 year old in Low A and not producing, so he’ll probably end up being organizational filler.

Considering I expected the Cubs to let Fontenot go for nothing, I’ll take it.

Evan Crawford

just turned 22. He was drafted in the 9th round last year and here are his stats this year..
.255 avg with 12 doubles, 12 triples, 4 HRs, 29 RBI, and 24/33 SB in 109 games in Low A.

by Grockcubs on Aug 11, 2010 7:44 PM CDT reply actions

Did they call up anyone to replace him?

Best of luck to him. While he proved he’s not an every day player, he did a fine job as a utility IF and was a pretty effective pinch hitter for the Cubs.

I just hope they don’t need him tonight, given how thin the bench is already, unless they’ve already called up Barney or someone else.

God Bless Mike Fontenot

Probably the best actor the Cubs had on the team (cameo on TBS sitcom "My Boys" in 2009).

This is killing Big Z and his pre-game ritual.

And Fontenot will probably hit a double into the corner tonight vs. the Cubs. Damn it.

I hope Barney gets some starts

One thing I’ve worried about is Castro not getting any days off. Don’t want to burn him out this year. Moving Barney up gives you a guy on the roster that can really play SS.

Actually I would not worry too much

Barney and Cashner are the only guys that could be gone. Hoff can probably stay if he want too ala Scales. Colvin & Castro were never there. Vitters, Jackson & Archer will probably be there.

How so?

He was below league average in 2007, well-below league average last year (in 400 PA) and below league average this year. He was a backup, and that’s how he got played. Losing a 30-year old that can only really play one position and with a career .330 wOBA is not a great loss. Lou didn’t misuse Fonty, the only problem is that the Cubs didn’t have a legitimate 2B all year.

by JSB on Aug 11, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Just because you don't have a legitmate 2B

Doesn’t justify playing even worse 2Bs ahead of him, especially when you have a potential platoon option as Lou did with Theriot.

by madcow256 on Aug 12, 2010 7:08 AM CDT up reply actions

No, Lou did the Cubs wrong.

Fontenot got his chances, so I don’t feel sorry for HIM. But Lou certainly should have played him more than Theriot this season for the sake of the team.

by elgato on Aug 11, 2010 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Fontenot got about what he deserved. Unfortunately when you have another guy getting unwarranted playing time it makes it look like Fontenot got jobbed. He probably deserved a straight platoon considering how bad Theriot is, but it’s not like the Cubs had a mini-Babe Ruth rotting on the bench… oh wait…….

Guess I should have looked down

and saw that you basically agreed with me.

by madcow256 on Aug 12, 2010 7:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Fontenot made a point of thanking Piniella after the trade

He said Lou was the one who gave him a chance to play in the bigs and he was glad to have known him.

I'm happy for Fontenot

Considering I would have been happy if Hendry had gotten a post-game spread for the team from Portillo’s for Sammy Sosa, Fontenot’s time with the organization has easily been a net plus. He was a good soldier trying to play 3B last year even though we all knew he had no business there and that Hendry had messed up by not having a decent AAAA 3B at Iowa. Given that the Giants can play Uribe all around the infield, having Fontenot be primarily a 2B backup for them is fine.

The Crawford kid will probably wash out, but it’s not like Fontenot was going to be back next year. I hope that Barney and DeWitt split the last 35 games at 2B, with Barney also getting some starts at SS and DeWitt some at 3B.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

by Invalid User on Aug 11, 2010 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Hendry is cruel

Trading Theriot to the Dodgers and Fontenot to the Giants: It’s like he’s trying to create the cajun civil war.

After playing together at LSU and witht he Cubs, Theriot and Fontenot are required to hate each other.

That's not been my experience

From sitting in the bleachers at Dodger Stadium. On top of that, didn’t a guy wearing a Giants jersey get murdered at Dodger Stadium a few years ago?

I know it’s cool for Dodger fans to pretend that they just don’t care about the other teams, but the reality is that Dodger fans really do hate the Giants.

Now outside of baseball, you might have a point. The LA/SF rivalry is very one-sided, with San Franciscans hating Los Angeles and Los Angelenos liking San Francisco and San Franciscans hating LA even more for liking them.

He didn’t do much for the team but I got the opportunity to meet him back in 2008 and spend a few hours hanging out because of work. He was just a down-to-earth cool dude. He’ll do well wherever he goes because I can tell you that he’s the type of guy that will get along with anyone in a clubhouse.

Well I think meh is pretty fair.

I felt bad for him rotting on the bench and am glad he will get some playing time, but I would hope we actually get something from him or what exactly is the point? It’s not like huge salary relief is coming. I guess it’s something for him, let’s hope so.
