Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

This SBNation.com post has an animated GIF of the play in which this happened -- a whirling, leaping throw where Chipper threw a runner out at first.

If this is the end of his career, he went out with a great play.

Indeed

How many others can say they went out on a great play?

Lots of talk on Braves SBN page

about Aramis clearing waivers and heading to Georgia. Just talk, but interesting to think about.

by HectorVillanueva on Aug 12, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

I'm sure Aramis has cleared waivers.

Remember, he has an option year that vests if he gets traded. Can’t see that happening, especially when he’s in and out of the lineup with injuries this year.

You know, Al ...

I could see this happening. It’s exactly the kind of move the Braves make sometimes. They could get Aramis for a relative song because his value is low. Then, he’ll turnaround and play two more good years.

If Atlanta makes this deal (and I’m not saying they will) it will work out.

by elgato on Aug 12, 2010 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

It could, I suppose.

They can likely handle it with Brooks Conrad on a temporary basis, though. I wonder if we could send them Jeff Baker for a low-level prospect.

I could see this happening too,

Baker makes sense. Maybe they’ll take DeWitt?

If the Braves want to offer us

Julio Teheran for Aramis, I say he’s gone.

But that’s not going to happen. Aramis has a lot of value for us next season, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to just dump him for salary relief. I sure as heck am not taking someone like Freddie Freeman for him, who’s the next Casey Kotchman, IMO.

time will tell but

Ramirez only vests next year…actually a plus for Atlanta since Jones is out for at least a year. Ramirez could be had for a few A level prospects right now…and it would assure a true 3B with still some threat.

by Ivy Walls on Aug 13, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I heard the Braves did kick the tires on Aramis...

… but decided not to, because of A-Ram’s health issues.

Jones is not out “for at least a year”. He’s expected to be back for 2011 spring training.

Also, his 2012 option vests if he is traded and he exercises his 2011 option (which he certainly would do). No team would take on that kind of financial hit.

Can't the Cubs just ship Jeff Baker there instead?

Hope Chipper's Back Next Year

I hope it’s not the end of his career. Maybe, he could be traded to the American League and be a DH. Has he done enough in his career already to be in the Hall of Fame?

I think he has,

but you never know with the Hall and their third baseman…

436 HR's, .306 BA

That should get him into the Hall.

His similarity scores on Baseball-Reference

match up with numerous HOF players. He won an MVP and a batting title.

Actually, they don't...

…well not as much as Chipper’s do…Santo compares most favorably to Dale Murphy according to BR, and he’s not in the HOF either.

Yeah, except that...

… Santo was a Gold Glove third baseman, and Murphy was an outfielder.

And he had 10 seasons over .300,

but for his career he’s a .306

He's one of the elite third basemen in the history of the game

For home runs by a switch hitter, he’s number three behind Mantle and Murray. He also kept his nose clean during the steroid era. In terms of WAR (Chipper has 76.7), he is lower than Hall of Famers Schmidt, Brett and Mathews. However, he’s higher than Robinson, so that’s not a bad place to be. His triple slash line (.306/.405/.535) is impressive by itself. I think he should be a first ballot Hall of Famer, but the fact that he doesn’t have 500 career home runs or 3,000 hits could make him have to wait for his second year.

RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).

As a young boy,

before I knew what it was to love the Cubs, Chipper Jones was my favorite player. I hope he doesn’t leave the Braves, it would ruin some of his mystique.

by slyfox1908 on Aug 12, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Same here.

I became a baseball fan in ‘95, and from that point forward, when the Cubs either were losing or playing during the day, I’d watch the Braves on TBS, and between Maddux and Chipper, they were always my favorites to watch.

Chipper Jones is my all time favorite non-Cubs baseball player and has been since I started watching this game. I hope he gets into the Hall and if that was his last play, then he’s going out with a bang.

Not to mention, maybe being out for the season will provide a greater incentive to win for the Braves.

by ZachenFoot on Aug 12, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

He's a first ballot HoFer in my book. 3rd or 4th best switch hitter of all time.

Ron Santo - 8,143 ABs, .277 BA; 342 HR; 1331 RBI = NO Hall of Fame?

Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.

Any more questions ?

but he is a great player. I lave that he named one of kids Shea in honor of his hot hitting in that park.

Sad.

I wanted to see Chipper and Bobby Cox do it one last time. I guess I’m cheering for the Pads or Rangers for the WS now.
