Ted Lilly wins 3rd straight for Dodgers

TRL threw 6 shut out innings as the Dodgers  just barely beat the Braves 2-1. Ted  gave up 3 hits, walked two and struck out four while throwing 89 pitches. Pulled for pinch hitter Reed Johnson( who struck out) in the top of the 7th, Ted actually had a hit earlier in the game which nearly doubled his BA to .56. He has now won as many games with the Dodgers in two weeks as he won with the Cubs in over 3 months. Likely to be one of the more sought after pitchers in the FA market this year.

Why not...

some of us want to remember the one who got away and is doing well. Amazing what he can accomplish with a little run support.

Just be grateful there aren’t regular updates on Theriot. :) (Although, I’m in the minority of fans who liked him and is not impressed by DeWitt as a replacement)

Hardly anyone WANTED him traded

however the feeling was if they found something better than " A’ free agent then it might be better than waiting. I am not convinced they did get better than they would have offering him arb and they sure suck worse without him. Season is dead but I could have lived without the last 3 starts by Diamond.
It will be interesting to see what the Dodgers do. I can’t believe they would be dumb enough not to offer him arbitration and get the draft pick, but you never know.

I think from most reports I read

that the Cubs would not have offered him arbitration. Also, he might not be a type A free agent. I think it was a decent trade and if he really wants to play for the Cubs he can come back after the season.

by LT on Aug 15, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Yea, not many WANTED him traded. No one didn't want him on our team...

But it was for the betterment of the future. You just want to hold on to him for sentimental reasons. The same as some people want to hold on to Lee.

by bilbosbuttons on Aug 15, 2010 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no comparison between Lee & Lilly

Lee has been horrible this year and shows no signs of getting better. Lilly was our 2nd best pitcher and tended to get better. Lilly will likely be a very productive pitcher for years to come. I love the guy but I did not want to hold on to him for sentimental reasons but because he a very good pitcher. Cubs starting rotation is in a shambles. I understand the trade was for financial reasons but I still find it disturbing that high budget team like the Cubs can’t afford to keep him( Yes I know they have a lot of other crappy contracts). Hopefully the pitchers the Cubs got for him will be of some use, but I think holding on and at least getting a draft pick for him would have been better.

Look, it was a classis "we can lose without him" move

And if he had stayed, the Cubs would still be losing. I don’t know if the team did better than a FA/arbitration/draft pick scenario, but Lilly was unlikely to be back in 2011.

by ClarkFan on Aug 15, 2010 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually suspect Hendry traded him to avoid offering arb

As we know he hates to do that unless the player pretty much agrees and arb will make it harder for Lilly to sign as an FA. I just don’t think they got enough and the team has fallen off a cliff since he left. I still have to watch games, i can’t help myself.

LA is toast

They are mathematically much closer than the Cubs but in reality they are done. They are ten games back in the loss column and have to pass 3 teams, However it beats playing for the Cubs right now.

They would have to pass 4 teams for the WC. As a Cub fan I fully support always believing you have a chance but the Dodgers have a very, very, very, very small chance ( and they are currently being crushed by the Braves)

I predict that the Cubs will offer a contract to Lilly this offseason

just as they would have had he not been traded. The questions remain: will it be the best offer he gets? Is he willing to return here for less than top dollar? Those unanswered questions probably influenced the decision to trade Lilly for a prospect, who presumbably is better and cheaper than a draft pick.

I endorse this practice of clinging to the past.

It’s great that we continue to track the progress of people who are no longer part of this team. I feel it’s important for us to focus our attention on things that no longer directly impact our team. If we don’t, we’ll have no choice but to focus on the 2010 Chicago Cubs, which will invariably spur conversation on how to improve the team in the coming years. A special thanks to Doggie Stalker, who continues to press on with her “sour grapes” campaign. Her sojourns into what the 2010 Cubs could have been under her leadership continue to provide a high level of value to this site.

by Flatley on Aug 16, 2010 10:34 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

When you see the post for the next Lilly start

I suggest you skip it. This is not a sour grapes thread FYI ( though I have plenty of them) this is an appreciation of player I truly loved watching over nearly 4 years. I spend 12 years watching Maddux pitch for the Braves and I watched as many of his starts as I could because I enjoy good baseball. Lilly is no Maddux, but I am going to watch and report on his starts through this season.

As for the many “sour grapes” threads well they certainly are now, but when posted they were more or less delusional pleas for changes ( Lou, Nady A-Ram etc). Not like the Cubs were going to listen to me, but one of the things we do here is express our dismay at how certain players & personal are performing and in our own pathetic way suggesting it is not the best policy. Last time I checked Lou’s lineups and the teams current personal moves still effected the team.

by Doggie Stalker on Aug 16, 2010 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Well argued.

As you say, Lilly’s no Maddux. He performed well for four seasons, poorly for two postseasons, and has been traded for prospects. If he was a player who had given us some history to remember, as Maddux did by being a product of our system, that would be something else. As it stands, he’s just another good ex-Cub who was traded from a poor Cubs team in a contract year. Nothing worth writing home about.
