Braves after Ramirez?
Interesting. Not sure if I like this idea or not. Depends on who comes back for him and the $$ involved.

I like Rami, but...
we can finish in fifth with or without him. Pending the terms, I’d be good with it.
yeah, they're going place!

The Braves are going to pay A-RAM the 16 million plus next year
when he option kicks in ? Real incentive for Chipper to come back.

I don't believe this.

The only way I see this happening (from a Braves perspective)
is the Cubs take on the rest of Derek Lowe’s contract ($34MM thru 2012)
or
Nate McLouth’s ($11MM thru 2011) and Kenshin Kawakami’s ($9MM thru 2011) contracts.

All of which would be silly unless happen in the middle of the season should we..
hit the lottery and contend. We’ve been trying to unload contracts, those for next year wouldn’t make much sense.

Why are people so...
for lack of a better word, eager to get rid of ARam? Who’s your 3B next year if he’s traded?
Well, first of all, he's aging and injury prone.
Second, he’s only really played even decently since the end of the June.
And probably just as significantly, he’s part of a failed nucleus. I’m in favor of this move — depending on how much the Cubs would have to take on in salary and the player return — because the Cubs need to move past the Lou era. Losing Aramis and D-Lee would be a big-time change that is probably necessary.
I know that the Cubs might have thought the same thing or something similar when they traded Ron Santo in the early ‘70s. But Aramis is likely gone at the end of next year anyway, and he’s just not the player he once was.
All that said, I doubt this happens given the money involved.
option for 13 mil next year, no?
Trot out DeWitt and throw the excess at the 2012 draft class.
I think
you’d have to put Dewitt at third and find a power-hitting right side of the infield via trade. Perhaps the Cubs could get Uggla to play at second and replace some of the thump lost at third.
I’m still not sure what the plan is for 1st base. If it’s to put Colvin there and have Dome start in right field again—then we might as well trade Rammy, not sign Uggla, and just take our lumps next year.
DEJESUS!!!
in house options
would be…
dewitt at 2B and marquez smith at 3B
or
dewitt at 3B and tony thomas, jeff baker or darwin barney at 2B

Does it really matter?
Who’s your 1B? Where’s the rest of your rotation? Bullpen?
Someday we'll go all the way...

DeWitt most likely
and trading ARAM would be a firm signal that we are in full on rebuilding mode.
Which I’m okay with as long as we don’t sign some aging veterans veterans to play a bunch of positions that could be used to see what we have on the farm

If Chipper does retire
then the braves have $26 million in found money to play and should be able to fit ramirez into their budget rather easily. so i’m not sure a deal would be contingent on the cubs taking a bad contract back.
This wont happen...
The Braves wont do it because trading for Ramirez forces the 2012 option to be picked up, which they wont want to spend $16M for. They’ll request either we pick up a good portion of that option or take a bad contract back.
The Cubs have no one in the system ready to replace Ramirez at 3rd. Although he’s been brutal this year, he’s not a bad contract like Zambrano or Fukudome are for us. He has potential to live up to his 14.5M option next year, and he is our best chance. We’ll want a good piece for him.

when was the last time a GM admitted he was actively pursuing trading for a specific player mid-season?

If it did happen and this is great game of chicken
If another team claims Ramirez they are stuck with $31M in salary for the next years plus 6 weeks now, in that Cubs would be smart to let him go period.
If he clears waivers and a deal is executed it makes sense in that the Braves have been out of contention for a few years. Jones they cannot count on period and if he returns it will not be full Chipper in 2011 who could play 1B instead of Claus.
What I suspect is how much the Cubs send in cash to Atlanta to augment 2012. Further bet if the deal is make we will see the famous PTBNL depending on Rami’s health or games played to the end of the year.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Part of me focuses on Ramirez's great regular season play as a Cub.
My head tends to focus more on his postseason failures. It would be interesting to watch him play in the postseason for Atlanta, where there are no outside pressure factors, making it easier to concentrate on just playing ball. My guess is he would be much better in the postseason in Atlanta. If the Cubs did have the chance to get some young players in return, they should go for this.

Seriously???
“A source close to the negotiations”????
No link. The source could have been the janitor who overheard some spanish sounding name thru a conference room door. This should be given no credence whatsoever.
