I'll go ahead and delete my post, since you have the prospects mentioned.

It would make sense to start working him out at 1B
since he might be there next season

robinson lopez
- scouting report
- milb stats and last 10 games
excerpts:
In witnessing him throw multiple complete innings in the 93-95 MPH range, I’m very comfortable calling his fastball velocity elite for the level.
Lopez’ curveball is still a work in progress
For Lopez, his growth will start in the bullpen as his preparation was sorely lacking
Due to Lopez’ two-pitch mix, it’s easy to project him as a power reliever

At least we are getting prospects from a premier organization
The Braves 15-30 prospects are probably better than most teams. Lopez sounds promising.
Here's another scouting report:
Here’s a quick scouting report on the three pitchers the Chicago Cubs acquired in today’s Derrek Lee trade courtesy of Baseball America. I’ll add more as more information becomes available:
Robinson Lopez: He’s a 6-foot-2, 190 pound 19-year-old right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic. Lopez is 3-8 with a 4.37 ERA for the Low Single-A Rome Braves with a 6.80 SO/9 and 1.37 WHIP.
Ty’Relle Harris: 23-year-old right-handed pitcher who pitched for the University of Tennesee. He’s a big guy at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds. He is a combined 1-2 witha 2.90 ERA in 30 appearances (1 start) in the Minors this season. He has a 10.87 SO/9 and 1.21 WHIP.
He was accused of assault and vandalism charges while a sophomore pitcher at the University of Pacific in January 2007 and was kicked off the team, according to CBS13 news. The report says that he slapped an 18-year-old female UOP student then broke her house window.
Jeffrey Lorick: 22-year-old left-handed pitcher who pitched for the University of Viginia. In 2010, he is a combined 3-6 witha 2.24 ERA in 27 appearances for both the Myrtle Beach and Rome Minor League teams. He has a 7.39 SO/9 and a 1.22 WHIP.

From mlbrumors.com
Baseball America ranked Lopez 16th among Braves prospects before the season and suggested that he “may be the biggest sleeper in the [Atlanta] system.” He’s still just 19, but his numbers in A ball haven’t been as impressive as the ones he posted in his Rookie ball debut last year. Lopez has a 4.37 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 so far in 2010.

I love the scouting report on Harris above:
He was accused of assault and vandalism charges while a sophomore pitcher at the University of Pacific in January 2007 and was kicked off the team, according to CBS13 news. The report says that he slapped an 18-year-old female UOP student then broke her house window.
Sounds like a guy of great character.

Is my response.

Except Harris had some decent numbers.

Starlin Castro; "Yeah, I hit second."
The Face of the Chicago Cubs.
the rest of the story
i don’t know if this helps or hurts to tell the whole story.
Former Pacific pitcher Ty’Relle Harris admitted striking an 18-year-old woman but said he did so while fighting off five or six males who attacked him after he was accused of stealing an iPod at an off-campus party on Jan. 13.
…
“The girl got in my face, we started arguing back and forth, and then she slapped me,” Harris said. “All her guy friends jumped on me, and it became a brawl right away. She’s still right there in my face, and I’m just fighting. I’m flailing and swinging and trying to get guys off me, and she got hit with an open hand. I just hit her out of the way.”
This makes me feel better...
thanks for sharing.

Sounds like
she deserved it. Or maybe not. Either way, hopefully Harris acts like a professional now that he’s no longer in college.

Nothing for 3 years
Atlanta was comfortable bringing him in.
i think i have a hard time...
… ever saying a woman deserves getting hit… but still.
this incident happened in 2007. is anyone surprised that newspapers are quick to blame, but oh so slow to tell the rest of the story?
i can’t find anything to say harris was convicted of anything…
i did find an article in the school paper. i don’t know if that link will work. it’s to a google view of a pdf file. look to page 4 column 3 “an unfortunate ending”. this is a biased story (but the others ones seemed bias also). at the time of this newspaper article, still no conviction. it says the article continues on page 9, but it actually picks up on page 5 (bottom of first column).
it’s how news works these days, i guess. you have to find your own fair and balanced coverage… thank goodness for google.
here’s a link to the pdf file directly.
i don’t know what the complete story is. i just find it a little sad to see the accusations, but three years later no vindications?
Did you read the disclaimer at the top of that article?
Are we to believe this story?
Good sleuthing though.
yeah, opinion, not facts.
i know, but, i figure all the allegations are definitely not facts either. and no one seems to know whether he was actually guilty or whether the charges were dropped… i figure a character opinion was just as good as missing facts…
i ain’t no lawyer. =) it’s just that, well, let’s just say, people ‘round these parts (on the interwebs) tend to take the first story they hear, and run with that, but that would be unfair in this case… assuming (i admit i assumed as well at first reading) that hendry got a criminal who hits women. that doesn’t seem to be the whole story here… but part of the sad commentary is that there isn’t a whole story being told by the news people…
i actually feel bad for this guy based on these allegations without knowing whether he is guilty or not…

Pirates are too bad.
They can’t beat anyone, but us and don’t play us enough. Cubs just need to hope for top 4.
Will miss DLee
All the crap he took this year, for a guy who was a very good, solid Cub. Oh how many will be pissed when next year a Lyle Overbay type will be at first trying to dig out a 3 hopper from Castro.
Lee had his struggles this year along with many. Why he got more shit I don’t know. This whole team was suckatude this year.
I just hope maybe one of these arms in the future will have a ERA in the 3’s out of the pen.
I think the prolonged sub-.250 average was part of it.
Lou keeping him in the 3-hole through thin and thin wasn’t Lee’s fault, but probably contributed.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 18, 2010 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree
Hey I was not happy with his offensive performance this year, just like the rest. But Lou running his, for the most part .235 average in the 3 hole everyday was on the wonderful Skipper.
Time to move on I guess. I always liked the guy, tough to see good guys go.
The stark reality is...
Derrek Lee was a fine baseball player for the Cubs during his tenure here, but he’s most likely reached his peak of production and will begin the inevitable decline. This year’s drastic drop off in performance wouldn’t have brought on so much angst over Lee if the team hadn’t also followed suit and tanked. I thank him for what he’s done with the Cubs and wish him well in Atlanta, but I won’t “miss him” next year.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Whoever the replacement is....
it most likely won’t matter. This team’s biggest goal next season is going to be finishing the year .500.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 18, 2010 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Of course that's probably what Ozzie said about Jim Thome..
I agree the Cubs should look for someone else for the future, but there’s a decent chance Lee will bounce back to his norm next year.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 18, 2010 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions
How much $ is that chance worth? That's the question.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 18, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions
And even if he does bounce back to the norm next year..
it still wouldn’t help the 2011 Cubs all that much. They’ve got so many problems that a DLee resurgency wouldn’t be particularly meaningful beyond a couple of games. And those couple would more than likely be between 70-75 wins.

I feel bad for Derrek. He had two incredible years (probably among the top 10 offensive seasons any Cub has ever had) but because they came in down years for the team he has gotten a bad rap from fans. He really was a marvelous player.
I actually am looking forward to seeing him in a Braves uniform
I always have liked the Braves, so it would be nice to see him excel. Sometimes a change of scenery ignites an aging player. I still think Lee might have some decent baseball left in him. Hopefully he plays well with the Braves, and maybe even earns a chance to play for them next year.

I think Dunn would be a great signing for the Cubs
I read today that he’ll probably get a 3-4 year / $12million average annual salary contract. Defense was his limitation and his defense has improved significantly since 2009. I think that Dunn would be worth a contract like that for his age 32-35 years. He would absolutely crush the ball at Wrigley.
we'll see
keep it to 3 years and i’m ok, go 4 and i start to worry about contract length

I think Dunn is looking inevitable
We are looking at 2006 redux. 33,000 at the park today. Dunn probably gets the most bang for the buck in terms of generating buzz for ticket sales in the off-season. We can only hope that it is a 3 year deal. I am fearing a 5/55 scenario.
That's what I think
Even though I want him gone, and this may sound odd, but if he stays, I think that Ricketts should give him an extension. This team is dying for a full rebuild, and when you have a GM that believes he is on a short leash you end up with the 2009 Bears off-season. In football a big off-season spending-wise isn’t that damaging to the club, but in MLB a big off-season spending spree on the wrong guys can doom the franchise for another 4 years.
that's my fear

A little sad
I will miss Derrek, particularly his defense. Yes, his offense sucked, along with most of the rest of team this year, but I surely didn’t have any problems with his defense.
I hope whoever plays 1st base next yr will be able to make those picks out of dirt, as well as be an offensive threat. Well, I can dream……….LOL
mostly agree with you
but that stellar defense was showing signs of breakdown this season. In combination with the offensive dropoff and impending free agency, I’m actually shocked the Cubs talked 3 prospects out of the Braves.

Braves have so much pitching
3 guys that profile best as relief pitchers (Lopez being the guy with the best shot as a starter) barely dents their pitching prospect depth.

You provided us Cubs fans with plenty of excitement while you were here and you were always a class act. Too bad others on this team can’t follow your example of how to be a “professional” baseball player. I know that I’ll miss you.
It’s kinda sad that the core that was supposed to take the Cubs to the World Series is being blown up. Guess it’s time to start over from scratch…oh well.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 18, 2010 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, "technically" they are all professionals in that they are paid
If you are going to use professional in the sense of an “expert”, Ryan Theriot, Bob Howry, John Grabow etc. might like to have a word with you.
Expert
–noun
10. a person who belongs to one of the professions, esp. one of the learned professions.
11. a person who earns a living in a sport or other occupation frequently engaged in by amateurs: a golf professional.
12. an expert player, as of golf or tennis, serving as a teacher, consultant, performer, or contestant; pro.
13. a person who is expert at his or her work: You can tell by her comments that this editor is a real professional.
Ummm...
Let’s start with Zambrano. Think trying to beat up your teammate in the dugout is professional?
Yeah Z is the last batshit crazy guy left on the team....is that your only example?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

DLee showed up every day...
…and played the game at 100%. He was a clubhouse leader.
How many times have you seen ARam loaf around the bases…Soriano not run a ball out…Soto show up out of shape…etc.
I have at least 71 more examples if you need them…as in 50-71.
this is a silly line of reasoning...
Lee is a model player and if everyone played like him we’d be 71-50 instead? It’s obvious you have a man-crush on Lee, but you’re taking it a bit too far in crucifying the rest of the team because they don’t seems as “awesome” as Lee does to you.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 18, 2010 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions
Not sure why that reasoning is "silly"...
If there were more leaders on this team and guys who played worth their paychecks, the Cubs might not be 71-50, but they sure as hell wouldn’t be where they are now. I’m not crucifying the entire team, just saying that if certain guys had stepped it up a bit…
Saying I have a man crush on D Lee is what’s silly. Do you hate him for some reason?
Yes, he's an Atlanta Brave.

derek lee
class act.what else can you say.a shame they have to break up the best core of players we have had since 69-73.
I know this thread's dead and about to fall off the front page
But I figure I might as well post what Jayson Stark wrote in his latest column:
Why did Derrek Lee say no to the Angels in July but yes when the Braves wanted to deal for him in August? It wasn’t only about where those two teams sit in the standings, sources tell Rumblings.
It was a factor that the Braves were in first place at the time and the Angels weren’t, those sources say — but far from the only factor.
In fact, the single biggest game-changer was the sinkhole the Cubs became in the four weeks or so between when the Angels called and when the Braves called. Between July 24 and Aug. 18, the day the trade went down, the Cubbies went 5-18 and made it obvious to Lee that the rest of this season was going to be about as much fun as an appendectomy.
Meanwhile, his kids were ready to head home to California for school by last week. So a trade no longer posed any kind of disruption to his family.
Combine those developments with the Braves’ great shot at playing in October, and Lee saw a whole different playing field than he’d seen when he vetoed his deal to L.A. of Anaheim. And next thing he knew, he was officially a name in the transactions column.
Pertinent info is about halfway down, although the revenue sharing stuff is very interesting.
