These promos are composed way in advance (probably by WGN)

I’m sure (since I am out of Chicago) that all players get a hit in these promos. It’s up to WCIU’s people to check what has been issued.

This happens all the time. Dated promos run with checking. Nothing unusual, but it’s usually funny when this happens.

When can we move on to relevant subjects of discussion? After spending 6 months belaboring the Bradley fiasco and finding out he wasn’t the real problem with the Cubs, is it really neccessary to pretend Theriot was the reason for 2010?

The 3 and 4 hitters DID get put through the ringer this year on BCB...

but the 3 and 4 hitters also had other facets of their game which were at least mildly tolerable while they were making all those outs in the middle of the lineup.

Lee and Aram haven't gotten 10% of the flack Theriot has

All the Theriot bashing is embarassing, I wish Al and others could just move on now that he’s no longer on the team.

What I truly don’t understand is the anger towards Theriot’s $2.6M salary and how frequently it’s brought up. I don’t see daily posts about Aram’s $16.75M, Fukudome’s $14M, Lee’s $13.25M, or even Sori’s $19M.

But Theriot had the audacity to go through arbitration which cost the Cubs $2.6M, and thus the haterade is being guzzled.

Theriot has made $390K, $428K, $500K and $2.6M in career. All things considered, I think he’s a bargain, especially when compared to Ramirez, Lee, Fukudome and Soriano.

So who is to blame for Theriot

being in the lineup and leading off? Are you suggesting he should have refused to hit #1? He’s had a very bad year and now he’s gone. Move on with the problems that need to be addressed like the ongoing salary limitations. Theriot won’t limit the success of the team henceforth and certainly was only a minor reason for the team’s failure this year and last.

by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 2, 2010 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

The best part about Theriot was that all the Theriot bashing trended towards hilarious

and it probably inspired some of bcb’s best inside jokes, whereas the Bradley (to take a recent example, also see Grabow or Howry) bashing had a distinctly more hateful tone (not to feed his conspiratorial mind or anything). Probably had a lot to do with the general view of the two players. Bradley rubbed people the wrong way so it was more combative whereas Theriot was the clown in the room that everyone makes fun of in a good natured way and I think bcb was the better for it. The cubs record, not so much.

by cubsonWGN4ever on Aug 2, 2010 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Theriot was, IMHO, the LEAST of this team's problems...

don’t get me wrong, he sucked, but, not nearly as bad as the bench, the bullpen (less Marmol and Marshall), Zambrano being an idiot, the so-called RUN PRODUCERS (A-Ram and D. Lee) and last but not least…the manager. Other than that, all’s well.

He started everyday, and usually at the top of the order

Yeah, and Ramirez and Lee played everyday (when NOT on the DL) and produced nothing till it was too late...

Theriot batting at the top of the order wasn’t Theriot’s fault. When he said he doesn’t like to walk (or something like that) he shoulda been immediately dropped to 8th, but, wasn’t Other than Byrd, nobody on this team has more hits. His problem was not getting on base OTHER than a hit…and when he DID get on base, NOT doing something stupid.

What is it that Theriot has been good at?

You’re claiming he’s the least of the teams problems, and then saying Lee and Aram suck. Fine. But everyone else is a bigger problem as well?

by shoemile on Aug 2, 2010 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...A-Ram and Lee...that's basically all you need to point at.

The 3 and 4 hitters. They were pathetic. I don’t put ALL the blame on them tho…the manager batted them in those spots. Insane? Absolutely.

Ron Santo - 8,143 ABs, .277 BA; 342 HR; 1331 RBI = NO Hall of Fame?

Brooks Robinson - 10,654 ABs, .267 BA; 268 HR; 1357 RBI = Hall of Fame.

Any more questions ?

Not even the 4th...I agree with SWL's comment about the bullpen.

Nope...the bench, the bullpen and the boss follow...then Theriot...but, that's just my opinion...

others see it differently. For instance…some think Cashner is a outstanding pitcher…I don’t see that. Maybe down the road he will be, just not now.

The bench has been a bigger problem than Ryan Theriot?

Nope. We’re talking about a guy who started everyday. Fukudome, Baker, and Fontenot have higher OPS’s than Theriot, with Nady not far behind. And yes, Koyie Hill can’t hit for crap.

by shoemile on Aug 2, 2010 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

That's really not all that fair to compare with Theriot...

he has a couple hundred ABs more than those guys. Where an XBH raises their percentage ALOT more than Theriot’s would. The Cubs’ bench is awful. No matter how you try to sugar coat it, it stinks.

Never said it was good

Just that Theriot is much more problematic.

by shoemile on Aug 2, 2010 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

having a bullpen full of guys who shouldn't be in the major leagues doesn't help either...

but the guy responsible for that is somehow dodging all the bullets from his boss, so….

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Theriot's RISP numbers

.325 BA
.391 OBP

The numbers say otherwise.

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

by tharr on Aug 2, 2010 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

no, those numbers only say what he's done with RISP...one situation.

based on those numbers he should bat 4th.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

When we discuss situational hitting

it’s typically RISP. So tell us what situational hitting you claim he’s been terrible at?

My biggest gripe was him batting leadoff. He drew 1 BB leading off in 56 games. His OBP was an atrocious .196. Now that was a situation that Lou caused and it was a terrible decision, but one of Lou’s making. .

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

Theriot wasn't traded away because he was a TOOTBLAN or because his OBP was pathetic ...

or because his OPS was weak or because he wasn’t a gold glove infielder. Theriot was traded away because he took this team to arbitration…he lost, but, no matter. He did it and they didn’t like it…but, again, that’s just my opinion.

I think it was a combination of

many things.

A lovely story:

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....

But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.

The end
