The Fox-TV Wizard Strikes Again! Cubs vs. Braves Preview, Saturday 8/21, 3:10 CT

The Cubs should actually be happy they are scheduled for a Fox-TV regional telecast by the Great Fox Wizard (pictured above). The Cubs are 4-2 in Fox-TV games (including a win last Saturday in St. Louis), by far their best record on any TV channel this year. (Yes, I know it doesn't matter.)

Today's game is the primary Fox game and according to this USA distribution map, appears to be going to about 60% of the country (based on market size, not the size of the areas on the map). The other games are Angels/Twins (going to the West Coast except western Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana & Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota and eastern Michigan) and Rangers/Orioles (going to New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, parts of Arkansas & Louisiana, and parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland & Virginia).

If you don't live in the areas mentioned above, you should be able to see the Cubs tomorrow (including Hawaii). Check the map for your specific city. Announcers will again be Kenny Albert & Tim McCarver (a sound-syncing device for the WGN radio broadcast is called for).

Remember when the Cubs used to win games? The game in Atlanta on April 8 is the only time the Cubs have defeated the Braves this year. It's Tommy Hanson's only career start vs. the Cubs. He allowed four hits, three walks and two runs in 5.1 innings and struck out seven.

Tom Gorzelanny has not faced the Braves since May 10, 2008, when he was still with the Pirates. He's made three lifetime starts vs. Atlanta, with a win, a loss and a no-decision and a 3.80 ERA. The Atlanta Brave who has hit him best is... Derrek Lee, who is 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles, two walks and two HR.

Today's game, as noted above, is on Fox. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

You must really feel strongly about this.

I'm pondering going to Wrigley just to avoid the stupidity of McCarver and Albert.

But then, I also have to consider that I’m not going to give money to a rotten franchise.

Should the Cubs seek a new closer in the offseason?

Marmol is so erratic. We need someone more consistent.

Marmol IMO is one of the 10 best in the league

by Jamison1 on Aug 21, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no such thing

as a consistent closer. The exception that proves the rule is unavailable.

Bullpen depth for when he loses it however. There’s a novel idea.

by SouthWabashSoul on Aug 21, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude, that's insane.

Seriously, Marmol is one of the best closers in baseball. You gotta take the good with the bad, some of the best closers are erratic at times. Baseball is entertainment, and Marmol is entertaining… The last things the Cubs need to worry about is Marmol.

Exactly

The Cubs have a guy who could be an excellent closer for years to come.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 21, 2010 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Right?

He’s blown what like 4 or 5 saves all season? He’s been nails his entire career, he’s essentially un-hittable. The walks are something he needs to work on, but not a deal breaker. If I need 3 outs, I want Marmol on the mound.

by tripdenten on Aug 21, 2010 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

The walks are nothing new

he had the same problem as a starter.

He’s young enough where that’s something he can fix. And I think it’s better this year than in the past (could be wrong, but …).

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 21, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He's never gonna fix it.

The “wildness” is too much apart of him. The Cubs are going to have to decide if the spotty command is something they can live with going forward, they aren’t going to be able to change it dramatically.

I don't close the door on it

but I guess I can see a scenario where this is as good as it gets, too.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 21, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed,

his extremely low BA against and extremely high strikeout rate make it acceptable. He’s gonna blow a few saves here and there, and I’m OK with it. Yesterday was just bad timing, but Marmol is a legit closer.

"You've got to get your damn shirts rolled up and go out and kick somebody's ass. That's what you've got to do. Period." -- Lou Piniella

by tripdenten on Aug 21, 2010 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

Marmol is a good closer. All closers blow up from time to time.

The thing is, so few of them are close to perfect that closers such as Mariano Rivera or Eric Gagne from a few years ago are so sought-after that they pretty much are gone to a new team in a microsecond when they become free agents.

And even then, they aren’t perfect to begin with.

You know the interesting thing about the games on Fox today? I don’t think any of them involve the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, or Philadelphia Phillies.

The guys at Fox must be enraged over this. Can’t say I feel sorry about this. At the least, their announcers’ most hated teams are on TV today. That is a definite plus.

Stockton’s just over the hill, but Chip should be in the prime of his career. He always has had problems with depth perception — how many “swung on belteds” ended up at the edge of the infield grass? — but his work in the 2009 playoffs was atrocious.

I do agree that Fukudome needs to play as much against RHP as possible, but Soriano can have a day off as often as he wants.

"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."

Bruce Levine

seemed to disagree with the way the Cubs were “developing” Colvin on talkin’ baseball this morning…

Colvin’s been overexposed batting leadoff and to make him learn a new position on-the-fly is risky. I hope the Cubs aren’t in the process of royally messing this guy up. He’s clearly having issues at the plate, to make him learn a new position where he most likely will struggle, could possibly make things worse.

So Colvin has been overexposed

and he’s not playing enough?

How much whiplash can I endure?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 21, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well,

I’m not arguing either way for his playing time, Fuku’s been playing well as of late. But batting Colvin leadoff is fairly foolish…His strikeout rate, which is high to begin with, has spiked as of late.

I’d rather he learned how to play first base at Iowa, but you can’t always get what you want.

So does that mean

I need Micah Hoffpauir? To be honest, I’d rather see Colvin at first than Nady. Is anyone else sick and tired of seeing Nady hit shallow fly-balls to the outfield on a routine basis? This guy is a hack. He’s untradeable too, I guarantee the Cubs have placed him on waivers and NO ONE is interested…Unless Hendry is actually seeking a return, which is just stupid to begin with. I just wanna see someone besides Nady at first, give me Baker, Colvin, Hoff, anyone, over him.

No I got it.

I love the Stones/ most songs featured in the “Big Chill”, but I just went sideways on an anti-Nady rant, sorry for the confusion.

Cool,

that Nady just drives me crazy, I’m baffled at the playing time he’s getting recently. I know Hoff can’t come up, but I’d rather see LaHair than Nady.

Apparently the Cubs are saving Colvin’s 1B debut for the series with the Nats per Bruce Levine.

Also, having said all of this,

with my luck Nady will go 3-4 with a HR, 2b and 3 rbi’s today…

Every time that guy called a Cubs game, they lost. That’s how I knew the Cubs would lose the 2008 NLDS.

Cubs lineup vs. #Braves: Fukudome RF, Castro SS, Byrd CF, Ramirez 3B, Colvin LF, Nady 1B, Dewitt 2B, Hill C, Gorzelanny P

Kouske's strong finish

Wonder if there’s still a chance they trade/dump him before Sept. 1? He’s useful player, but not for a team going nowhere.

If Colvin ends up at 1B we’re still gonna need a RF and no one in system since the kid Jackson is prob. a year away. What are options (realistically, not Carl Crawford). Just need a 1-year stopgap type, preferably LH. (this also presumes that Fulkudome will be traded in offseason if not before).

Like a lineup with 4 LH hitters *(5 counting P).

What I would like to know is

How the map gets drawn up. I live in Southeastern Michigan. Everytime the Cubs are on, if there is an American League game, we get it. We could get a Seattle-KC game over a Cubs Cardinals game (sarcasm.) But we rarely ever get Cubs games here. Look at the map. Almost all red east of the Mississippi, except for Southeastern Michigan. Must want to watch the Twins as the Tigers fall another half game back in the standings

Just a guess, but

since you live in Michigan and an AL team is located in Detroit, you therefore get an AL game since it is assumed to be more relevant.

I don't want to hear any bitching about Cubs on TV

we should be lucky these clowns are even televised. At this point, I’d put reruns of “Mama’s Family” on before I put on a Cub game.

No self-respecting network should be showing the Cubs

They are a lousy team and every network has the right and the duty to its bottom line to present good matchups. They owe Cubs fans nothing.

But you also want to start building the postseason audience. The Rangers are just about locks to be there. Might as well introduce them America
