A Marquis Matchup: Cubs vs. Nationals, Wednesday 8/25, 6:05 CT
You may have noticed the somewhat small crowds at Nationals Park the last two days. With two teams around 20 games under .500 playing each other, this is no big surprise.
Thanks to SB Nation DC's editor Mike Prada for pointing BCB at this link -- Bravo's "Top Chef DC" is airing an episode tonight that was taped earlier at Nationals Park:"Top Chef D.C." is heading to Nationals Park tonight for an elimination challenge. Contestants will be asked to run two concession stands and cook up ballpark food for fans to enjoy. There will be appearances by John Lannan, Adam Dunn and Matt Capps, the latter of which is obviously not with the Nationals anymore. The episode will air at [9 p.m. CDT] on BRAVO.
Sounds like fun. You'll likely see more people at Nationals Park in this episode than will be in attendance tonight, as the Cubs go for the series sweep.

Jason Marquis has had a horrific season. He made three starts in April, including one where he faced seven batters and didn't retire any of them, before undergoing surgery for bone spurs in his elbow and missing three months. He's made three more starts since returning, finally having a good outing (five innings, one run) in his last start vs. the Phillies on August 20; the Nats lost 1-0. He and Ryan Dempster matched up on August 8, 2009 when Marquis was with the Rockies; the Cubs beat him that day. The current Cub who hits him best is Aramis Ramirez (9-for-24, .333, two HR).
Marquis' streak of playing for a team that made the playoffs every season of his career will end this year.
Ryan Dempster has had another solid season, leading the team in wins (though, of course, the "win" stat for individual starting pitchers means less and less every year). His 160 K's rank seventh in the National League. He faced the Nats on April 28 at Wrigley Field, allowing solo HR to the Adams (Dunn and Kennedy); it was a solid outing, but the Cubs lost 3-2. Dunn and Kennedy, in fact, are the only current Nats who have homered off Dempster, who has held them to a .236 average (17-for-72).
Lineup via tweet from CubsInsider:
#Cubs lineup @ #Nationals (8/25): Fukudome RF, Castro SS, Byrd CF, Ramirez 3B, Hoffpauir 1B, Soriano LF, Dewitt 2B, Soto C, Dempster P

when they were just a canadian band they were fine, but they didn’t blow up and put out their best stuff until hooking up with US artists.

The original band
had one American and I think Robbie Robertson, a Canadian, was the primary force behind that band pretty much the whole time.

Levon Helm was the lone American. He was the drummer. Robertson is Canadian as I said and was the primary force behind the band in terms of song writing.

That's not true
we just have ridiculous laws about Canadian music and how often it has to be played on Canadian radio which is great for Sum 41, Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado and the Barenaked Ladies but terrible for good bands. Arcade Fire are still more popular in the UK and US than they are up here.
Plus we did have these guys.

It looks like they're making the batting order based on positions rather than production
Hoffpauir’s at 1b, so he has to hit in the middle of the order. Soto’s the catcher, so he hits at the bottom of the order

Hoffpauir is...
1 for 1 with a double in his career against Marquis. DeWitt is 0-5, etc. He’s playing matchups.

Maybe it's a matchups thing?
Quade knows Soto as well as anybody from his time in AAA to the past few seasons.
Against Marquis, Soto is 0-5 with a walk in his career.
Proud recipient of a hot dog shot from the Iowa Cubs hot dog gun.
just guessing
but look at soto’s career splits by batting order (all sample size caveats apply):
5th – .778 ops in 254 PAs
6th – .796 / 331
7th – .876 / 506
8th – .851 / 229
so three possibilities:
1. soto had a bad year in 2009 hitting 5th/6th and the cubs have decided he can’t do it, or at least, can’t do it yet
2 soto is more comfortable hitting 7th/8th
3. hendry sucks, lou sucks and as soon as quade loses, he’ll suck too

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

Ah, Marquis. The answer to the question
when should Sammy have had a clue that the Cubs weren’t going to retire his number?
That made him so angry, he hit his 600th HR off Marquis
http://thefrustratedfan.blogspot.com/
by Jody Jody Davis on Aug 25, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe someday it can be retired for Tyler Colvin.
Someone ought to tell Sammy that the following players wore #10 after Ron Santo: Billy Grabarkewitz (1974), Mike Sember (1977), Dave Kingman (1978-80), Leon Durham (1981-88), Lloyd McClendon (1989-90), Luis Salazar (1991-92), Steve Lake (1993), Scott Bullett (1995-96), Terrell Lowery (1997-98), and manager Bruce Kimm (2002), although Kimm actually asked Santo for permission, because by then the team was thinking about retiring it…
29 years after Santo left the Cubs!
Sammy needs to chill.
Also, the following players wore #31 after Fergie Jenkins: Tom Dettore (1975-76), Joe Coleman (1976), Jim Todd (1977), Davey Johnson (1978) and Ray Fontenot (1985-86); and the following after Greg Maddux: Kevin Foster (1994, 1997-98), Bobby Ayala (1999), Brad Woodall (1999), Mike Fyhrie (2001), Donovan Osborne(2002) and Mark Guthrie (2003) before Maddux returned.
Larry Biittner and Fritz Connally wore #26 after Billy Williams before it was retired.
Only Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg got to have their numbers worn by no one else after they did.
Sammy needs to shut up.

I honestly don't know.
I do know it’s not happening anytime soon, if ever.

His number will be retired
when they pry the corked bat out of my cold dead hands.
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

I happen to believe that it will eventually be retired...
Time and turnover will heal a lot of wounds.
I equate it with the situation at Indiana U. with Bob Knight. That relationship was a torched as could be but as the seasons go by and the sport rolls on, people will eventually look back and give success its due. Even if they don’t like the person.

Perhaps the Cubs will wait until after he dies to retire his number
Yes, I went there – but only with the best of humorous intentions…

Some of these names...
…are not ringing a bell. Brad Woodall? And I barely remember the Cubs having Donovan Osborne or Bobby Ayala. I can at least recall Terrell Lowery vaguely.
"You know, you should be a lot more careful crossing the street like that, otherwise you could die - if that bothers you."
Osborne was another reclamation project.
He had a good spring in 2002 after missing two years with injuries, so he made the team.
He made 11 crappy relief appearances and went back on the DL, and was later released.

After I play for the Cubs, wearing #21!
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Can they make it three in a row?
Hope they can.
A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.
The end
At this point,
I’ll take a win streak of any length no matter what happens.

Ok...I gotta ask...
How can a guy like Manny Ramirez probably get claimed off waivers and he hasn’t had a hit…not one…in 2 months? And we can’t dump Nady?
Joe Girardi...2011 Chicago Cubs Manager...Book it!!
Well, Manny was on the DL for a while.
He just came back.
And even then, he’s a better hitter than Nady.

Besides, we've already got someone with hair in our minors.
LaHair, IIRC … oh wait…

Does he have a boombox?
If so, we’d have to bring Kerry Wood back to smash it.

I thought it was still one of those unsolved mysteries...
I fully expect to see this as a Cold Case episode many years from now.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
wasn't this mystery settled previously?
it wasn’t Wood…..

I didn't either, but your words were pretty definitive
“we’d have to bring Kerry Wood back to smash it.”
That sure sounds like something someone who has an inside connection would say… ;-)
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
No, I have no inside info on this.
Just what I’ve heard.

Manny might suck and have been hurt since getting of the pregnancy hormones
but his reputation is as one of the most fearsome hitters of the past decade.
some might think that’s a pretty good risk to take
