So's Casey Blake, Scott Podsednik and Jay Gibbons. Gibbons has been on fire at the plate since replacing Garrett Anderson on the roster.

I can see someone possibly snatching up Blake.

Blah

I really don’t like Manny. Maybe if he hadn’t forced his way out of Boston…

Yeah that's mostly how I feel about it.

Might be different if we were in the pennant race and needed an outfielder. Then perhaps it would be worth exploring. But neither of those things are true so…I think LA and Manny are getting what they deserve.

1B option?

Perhaps Manny could be used as a stopgap 1B option for next year? Obviously his best position is DH, but I assume he could make a passable attempt at first. There is no chance the Dodgers offer him arb, so he wouldn’t cost any picks, and wouldn’t cost the years or dollars that Adam Dunn would. Manny on a one year deal would be a motivated Manny, or at least as close to motivated as he can get at this point.

I'd rather play Soriano at 1B than Manny.

And I wouldn’t play Soriano at 1B. Ever.

Soriano at 1st

Not that I’m advocating this, but why not try Soriano at 1st, if there is no better (or cost effective) option? He did start out in the infield, so he has had experience with grounders, and his flaws as an outfielder seem to be more bad reads and hops than bad glovework. I know that there is a reason he was moved to the OF in the first place, he was bad at 2B, but maybe he could solve a 1B hole, and open up LF for a more capable defender.

by neifiisgreat on Aug 25, 2010 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

What?

First you suggest Manny Ramirez as a Cub first baseman, then Soriano. First base is not that easy of a position. Who’s next? Zambrano?

Thanks

for the snide remark, I really appreciate you contributing to this discussion. Every ranking of the defensive spectrum I have seen has middle infield and CF at the difficult end, and 1B at the easy side. Which defensive position is more difficult than 1st?

If Soriano could handle 2B in the past, and LF in the present, I don’t see any reason he couldn’t give 1st a shot. This might even be a good time to try it out, as the year is effectively over. His defense would have less of an impact at 1st than in the OF. I also think Manny could handle 1st, provided he is healthy.

The key to putting either of these guys at 1st means we fill a hole without losing our 2nd round draft pick in a strong draft year, as opposed to paying for Dunn/Pena in both cash and picks.

Easier than 1st

It should read “Which defensive position is easier than 1st”.

Soriano basically said...

he’s not open — at all — to the idea of moving to 1B.

I've posted this several times, but here it is again.

First base requires two things: good hands and good footwork.

Soriano has neither.

Yeah the little hop to catch a ball from Aram wouldn't work

It’d pull his foot off the bad and the runner would be safe…

Please....

If you’re really serious about the comments below, then I’d really like to know how in the world the idea of Manny Ramirez as a Cub firstbaseman ever seemed like a good idea, because it is extremely hard NOT to be snide with a suggestion like that.

And it’s my discussion, such as it is.

Perhaps Manny could be used as a stopgap 1B option for next year? Obviously his best position is DH, but I assume he could make a passable attempt at first.

I love how

1B defense is so undervalued. Seems like to some fans a corpse with a glove would be passable at first. Hell lets call American Pickers to dig up Charlie Finley’s mechanical rabbit “Harvey” to fill the position.

He can still hit. Not seriously suggesting that the Cubs acquire him in the off-season. But he can still hit.

by circuitclout on Aug 26, 2010 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt he becomes a stud

He has had about 800 MLB plate appearances and is going to be 26 next season. He is what he is by now. A nice player, but far from a stud. Not to say the Cubs didn’t mishandle him, but it doesn’t look like they gave up a future All-Star.

by JSB on Aug 27, 2010 1:59 AM CDT up reply actions

It may still be too early to tell.

He will be 26 next year. He was hurt much of both last year and this year — so he’s never really had a full shot.

I presume Buck Showalter will give him one next year. After that, maybe we can decide “stud or not”.

I don't want

Don’t see how he’d possibly fit any need. Also, it’s kind of odd that you don’t hear Sox fans clamoring for him. If he DH’s only he could probably push his numbers up a few points, and stay healthy. I know Ozzie doesn’t like the pure DH on the roster, but for a month or so you think he could live with it. They need bulllpen help, but Manny would help the offense, too.

Hurray for Mannywood...

My concern is this, does this move improve the Sox? It’s basically changing DH from Mark Kotsay/Mark Teahen/Andruw Jones to Manny Ramirez. Even with Manny Ramirez 2010, he’s an improvement from the collective of non-productive DH’s the Sox have trotted out there.

The Sox offensive does need help and most specifically the DH but an even greater is the bullpen. The Sox let Brian Fuentes slip by and he landed with the Twins, a double whammy. That may turn out to be the non-move that hurts the most.

As it is though the Twins offense is so much better than the Sox even with the addition with Manny I’m not sure it’s enough to overcome the 4.5 games in the time left this season.
