He gave up a single and got two popups and a flyout pitching the 9th inning of an 18-4 blowout by the Astros.

Who knew? The Cubs were just using him wrong. Should have put him in the bullpen.

I remember watching Doug Dascenzo come in and pitch. I know for sure I got to see him twice. Haha… In those blowout games, I always wanted to see Shawn Dunston come in and pitch an inning. I guess he never did because Zimm or whoever thought he might kill someone with one of those fastballs. lol

It would have been fitting

if he had induced three straight groundouts to second.

LOL

Actually, this is the fourth time TLR has used Miles as a mopup pitcher. He has a career 4.50 ERA in four innings, with no walks.

Ironically, that's 3 more times than he's played CF or RF.

And one less time than he’s played LF.

And still, Hendry extolled Miles’ ability to play all three OF positions when he signed him.

Don't tell Lou. He'll want Aaron back.

If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.

The question is:

Should Lou have put Fontenot out there during either of the two blowouts we’ve suffered through in the last week or so?

Yes.

Absolutely. Or Baker. Lou keeps complaining about the bullpen being overworked and then he uses a pitcher an inning.

The Cubs, though, surprisingly, rank only eighth in the NL in total relief appearances.

Soriano has a pretty good arm

They should work with him a bit to see if he can throw some heaters over the plate and have Maddux take him under his wing. Then he can pinch hit in any game and do mop-up duty for blowouts maybe even more.

you cant risk a starter getting injured

An injury to Aaron Miles is a risk LaRussa was willing to take.

Fontenot, then.

He almost never plays, so why not?

I was afraid

This was going to be another post about how TLR always gets the most out of his players. If only we could have taught Aaron to juggle plates when he was with us, maybe we could have gotten something useful out of him.

"Wait, are you saying I'm a sunshine-pumping, koolaid-drinking, Soriano-loving, rainbow-rising, unicorn-riding, double-clutching, Sweet Lou-backing, Hendry-supporting, hey hey whaddya saying, Cubs are going all the waying, glass is overflowing, Rothschild is all-knowing, Cubs fan? - ballhawk

See, why didn’t any of us think of telling Jim Hendry about this. Could have saved the season.
