Texas Rangers Sold To Nolan Ryan Group
The article contains this sentence:
Ryan and his business partner, sports attorney Chuck Greenberg, won the team with a $593 million bid, including $385 in cash
$385 in cash? That's all? I could get that from my ATM in a couple of days. Guess I should have bid.

Ha
Saw this on the ticker on Mike and Mike – I like this, especially considering he beat out Cuban for the team. Al, we need to start a donation link/savings account so everyone on BCB can begin chipping in money so that when the Cubs come for sale again we can have the $1billion necessary to buy the team.

there ya go
if everyone paid .05 for each comment and $1.00 for each post we could have the cubs by 2015 – would hate to be one of the players on the cubs then, someone has a bad week and he is immediately DFA’d…and other GM’s would hate us - I will give you Theriot and Fukudome for Pujols…

All we need is three of Al's ATMs
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
If Cuban offered more money
it will be interesting to see if he fights this.

Based on this quote from the article, I would guess he won't.
Despite losing, Cuban was smiling after the auction. His group dropped out of bidding after reaching a predetermined limit. Cuban, who also made an unsuccessful bid for the Chicago Cubs last year, said he wanted to buy the Rangers but remains an enthusiastic fan of the team—and of Ryan.
"I wish them the best," Cuban said, later ducking out a back door so television cameras and photographers would remain focused on Greenberg and Ryan, adding, "It’s their moment."

I don't care if he does,
but he might have a case.

It doesn't matter
how much Cuban and his group would have offered. His group was never going to be allowed to buy the team going up against Nolan and his group. MLB does not want Cuban owning a team and he never will. It’s the good old boys club, otherwise known as a bunch of spoiled rich kids sticking their tongues out at him and taunting him.
In this case, the decision wasn't made by MLB.
It was made by a bankruptcy judge.

I aologize for the non-reply earlier..
I had a 바보 moment. I forgot to add the quote from an article about the case. So I’ll attempt to post it.
Whatever the auction’s outcome, final approval of the sale rests with Major League Baseball. A league official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the AP on Tuesday that MLB intends to work with the winning bidder — although it has the option of choosing the second-highest bid.
It means..
that I had a dumb/moronic/foolish moment. It’s just a korean word which I seem to use almost every day. I apologize for not putting that meaning in parens.
That is somewhat true
In this case the judge decided who won in the courthouse. However, while reading about this case it states: that the final decision is MLBs and MLB has the right to accept the second-highest bid. Which will not happen after the outcome of this bankruptcy court session. I am very happy for the Rangers and Ryan though, it’s a great marriage.
Selig will never allow Cuban to own a team
It’s a shame. Cuban actually has ideas. Ryan has a name.
Enjoy your season, Rangers fans. Ryan is just one more former player who thinks he actually knows something about business because he made a lot of money.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Ryan has done a pretty good job as the President of the team
he helped put together the roster that is currently running away with the AL West title.
And as soon as the Angels re-tool
the Rangers will be looking up at them again.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Maybe D Lee can be at 1B for them?
Why do we not have the same feeling the Cubs will retool like the Angels?
Because the Angels don't suck
they are safely in second and probably won’t make the playoffs, but they don’t suck.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Exactly what ideas does Cuban have that would improve baseball?
Apart from being a self-promoter, that is.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
He would have ideas about
1) Marketing baseball to younger audiences
2) Incorporating new media
3) Instant Replay — I’d bet it happens sooner rather than later if Cuban is out there.
But I’m not surprised a traditionalist would want the old boys club to stay the same. After all, they’ve done such a GREAT job running things so far.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Replay?
Absolutely. You know I’m in favor of that.
New media? Well, they’re doing it, though not well. They need to start by eliminating blackouts.
Marketing baseball to younger audiences? Why is that something Mark Cuban knows about? He’s older than Tom Ricketts.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Because he works in an industry
where the primary customer base is younger.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
That doesn't necessarily translate to being able to market baseball.
They are two different industries.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
But same customers
Whatever. Cuban is more than a self-promoter
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Whatever
You’ve got it in your head that Cuban would upset the apple cart and is nothing more than a self-promoter. Moving on now.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Blackouts
As I have stated before are terrible and need to be eliminated. I live in a market where I get blackedout for Cardinals, Braves and Reds. I believe if any only the Cardinals should be blackedout.

I wonder how many changes Cuban would have made this season as the owner of the Cubs?
Tom Ricketts is amazing!
What would you suggest Ricketts do?
Baseball is a lot different from basketball & football in making changes/moves.
You can’t just DFA a guy and move on when they are owed millions of dollars, you are only making the problem worse. I also think you don’t want to be known as an organization who DFAs somebody like Fukudome, DLee, Zambrano or Ramirez. These players have families and kids to think about just like we do, which is why I respected DLee and his decision to finish the season here.
I believe Fukudome will return to Japan after this season and the Cubs will be off most of his money, which could be used to help acquire a need in the off-season. I hate to say this but unless Hendry is really lucky this off-season don’t expect the Cubs to be contenders next year either. Maybe win 84 if they are really lucky. I would love to see Fukudome return to Japan and the Cubs not resign DLee(unless he takes a huge paycut) and pursue Cliff Lee but that is a pipe dream
Making changes or trades requires a willing partner. Which isn’t easy with most teams struggling financially or not needing the type of players we have to offer. Rickets could use a line from Lou and say “what do you want me to do?”

This was a very reasoned response.
Unfortunately, you took TJ11 seriously. He’s doing performance art.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Do you agree that Hendry and Lou would probably been gone long ago with Cuban as a first year owner?
No.
Know how many Mavericks employees Cuban fired his first year there?
Zero.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
And he somehow managed to succeed
No championships, but the Mavs are a consistent power in a salary cap sport
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
I got blasted
for comparing success in a salary cap sport is similar to success in baseball…much easier when contracts are basically set for you by the leauge…plus attracting people to Dallas is a tad easier than attracting them to Minneapolis.

The point about cities, I agree with you
But in the NBA, there are only about six teams that win championships. Literally.
Since 1980, the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Pistons, Rockets, and Spurs have won 28 of the 30 titles. The 1983 Sixers (only one of the greatest teams ever) and the 2006 Heat (A fluke year when some of the traditional powers were in transition) were the only exceptions.
For Cuban to interrupt that would be tough.
And you’re right, the salary structure is set, but the Mavs still have to pick the good players. Lots of NBA teams fail at that.

true
but why has Cuban (in nearly 10 years there) failed to bring them to the promised land? I personally think he is just really good at being a self-promoter and has had one of the best forwards in the game with only 1 finals appearance…I wanted him to own the Cubs but after seeing how the Ricketts family has built their wealth I much prefer them…

He bought the team Jan 2000. In 2000-2001 they went 53-29 in his first full year as owner.....
Why would they have made a change? They were winning!
The Cubs might be amazing but they have less wins than the Mavericks did that season so far……
So I think I may disagree. I don’t think he would have put up with the lethargic play from the players and manager.
Cuban didn't have a higher bid
Despite what was being mentioned yesterday, Cuban did not have a higher bid according to this article. If he did, the bankruptcy judge would have voted in favor of Cuban rather than Ryan. If Selig tried to keep Cuban out in the hypothetical scenario that he had the highest bid and the bankruptcy judge ruled in favor of him, the Cuban would have a legitimate case for collusion. There’s a reason he’s shrugging it off and it’s because he didn’t have the highest bid.
RIP Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010).
Is it
possible that Cuban offered more total dollars but had less cash?
DEJESUS!!!
Cuban did not offer more money
It was an auction. It was reported yesterday that Cuban had offered more money because he had. Then Greenberg/Ryan came up with more money and increased their bid. Cuban did not up his bid again.
I think it’s absolutely false that MLB would not allow Mark Cuban as an owner. Why? Because he’d criticize umpires? Who cares? He pays his fine and then moves on. In all labor agreements in the NBA, he’s been a big supporter of David Stern, which is all that Bud would really care about anyway.
But it doesn’t matter because he was outbid. He may end up buying another team one day. He’s been approved to bid twice now and if he ends up with an agreement to buy a different team, I think he’d be approved.

Slight correction
Cuban did offer a little bit more money, but it apparently came with some fees that lowered the amount that the sellers would actually receive to being less than what Greenberg/Ryan offered.

Kurkijan said on Mike & MIke today
that baseball will never let Cuban in. They don’t like him. I think Reinsdorf has some beef with him that comes from the NBA.

Just saying that an actual reporter with actual contacts
is reporting that Cuban is being blackballed.

whats wrong with that
if you have a business and you dont like someone are you going to let them in the door? Cuban isnt that special…he just got lucky in the dot com boom and had enough money to buy a basketball team. Also, unless I am mistaken he has exactly 0 championships as an owner and only 1 finals appearance. Get back to me that he is a great owner when he has at least 1 finals win…

Mavs were one of the most horrible franchises in the NBA
and Cuban made them a power.

He got lucky in the dot com boom. Right.
Just like Carnegie got lucky in the steel boom and Rockefeller got lucky in the oil boom. If people didn’t want what any of them were selling they wouldn’t have ended up rich. It’s not like Cuban was born into money. He might act like an ass but he’s a smart guy.
