What can we expect in 2011

Looking forward to 2011, just what can we expect to see that’s going to improve the team? From a position player starting roster, we will probably see only a change at 1B. Is there any likely replacement for Lee that will make this team competitive? The rotation will also change little. Dempster,  Gorzelanny, Wells, Silva and Zambrano seem to be the core that will return. If we sign Lilly in the offseason, we’re back to square one. If not Lilly, will it be Diamond or another pitcher from our minors? Either way, does anyone expect our rotation to duplicate the number of quality starts they’ve completed in 2011? Probably not.  Marmol will close with Marshall the setup guy and Cashner in the 7th if he isn’t turned to starting.

Let’s say Ricketts allows Hendry to dump salary. Silva and Zambrano are the only logical impact players likely to be dumped. The rest, Fukudome, Nady, Baker, Fontenot and Hill, are already insignificant to the failure that plagues this team.

So honestly, next year’s team appears to be essentially the team that we’re watching struggle to win games. Hendry can tweak the middle of the bullpen and add a few bench guys but what we see now is what I expect us to see next year. Can Hendry really make 3 or 4 solid moves that can make this group a contender in 2011? Please enlighten me because we’re not even close to being competitive.

How bad are we? The numbers tell us all we need to know. Here are some of the key statistics that limit this team. We’re 4-16 in the opening game of the last 20 series we’ve played. When we’ve played the easiest in the majors thus far, that’s a terrible number. And it starts with the leadoff hitter in the opening inning. Our guys have a collective OBP of .218 from that spot including only 4 walks and no SB. As a result we’re 2nd worst in runs scored and 4th worst in allowing runs in the opening inning.

When we are in a close game and get into the 7th, we’re the worst team in both leagues in allowing runs in the 7th inning. That usually leads to the fact that we’re a major league worst in close games winning only 36%. The best team, the Phils are at 61%. We're 2nd worst in SB and 8th worst in allowing SB. Finally, we have a team WHIP of 1.41 while our offense produces only 1.31. When you add the worst defensive team and the league worst OBP with RISP to the equation, that spells terrible.

Mr. Hendry, please explain what 3-4 tweaks that can possibly make a difference. This is a team that is horribly flawed, it’s not a young team on the ascent. Our key players like Ramirez, Soriano, Lee are on the downside of their career. If you can put anything close to a contending team on the field next year without adding a hugh payroll bump, I’ll vote a lifetime contract for you. You broke it but it’s a shame you won’t be able to fix it.

Another wonderful post

But they were that way when the Cubs were winning, too, so I guess that isn’t new. :)

Man very true.

There is little to talk about besides prospects acquired, rookies improving next year and complaining…I have a tendency to agree normally that whining is irritating, but with the situation this team is in, really those things are the only things left to do if anyone is still watching the team.

Nice read.. This teams seems exceptionally well equpped for losing despite having lots of talent..

The numbers that talk about poor performance leading of series and leading off games are right on.

This team does not have leadership required to assert a new narrative, and so they revert back to being the “Chicago Cubs” that everyone expects – lovable losers.

If I were running the cubs I would do a couple different things this offseason. First of which I would let D-Lee leave as a free agent and get the compensation pick for him. Next I would make a decision on who should still be on this team, I say you keep Soriano, Byrd, Colvin, Castro, Ramirez, Soto, DeWitt and you redue your entire bench with a mix of young tripleA guys (Hoffpaur, Barney) and some vets for cheap contracts. The first move I would make is trading for Brian Roberts. The Orioles are in a serious rebuilding fase, and you could get him for relatively cheap especially after being on the DL all year. Maybe a package of LeMeuh, Carpenter, and one of our catching prospects could be enough. Next thing is find a hitter to bat 3. I think that Victor Martinez is a freeagent, and he could hit 3 and play first. If you could make those two moves you could have a lineup of 1.Roberts 2B 2.Castro SS 3. Martinez 1B 4.Ramirez 3B 5.Colvin RF 6.Soriano LF 7.Byrd CF 8. Soto C. Pitching wise we are set in the 8th and 9th with Marshall Marmol and for the 7th maybe its finally time for Samardjia to live up to the hype. I would like our pitching staff to look like Dempster, Zambrano, Wells, Cashner. The way Chris Archer is pitching at AA he looks like he could be the next young arm to come up, and deserves a serious look at the #5 spot in the rotation, especially if your looking to start rebuilding. The way I see it the Cubs are in abit of an inbetween stage. They have alot of older players, and alot of good young talent that still needs another year or two to develop(Jackson, Lee, McNutt, Vitters, Archer) Until they are ready you are going to have to make the best out of the situation, and bringing in roberts, and Martinez would be perfect especially if you could get them for discount prices, and you were able to dump Fukudome.

But what would he be likely to get in arbitration?

Based on Lee’s 2010 play that could be a much higher number than he will get in a contract offer. I really don’t want him back for $8-10M in 2011.

by ClarkFan on Aug 12, 2010 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's the issue...

his arbitration offer is going to be at least 80% of what he made last year, right? That is probably more than he can get on the free agent market after this abysmal season. He might just take it if we offered. Which is why he probably won’t be offered arbitration.

by SouthernCub on Aug 12, 2010 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

correct

the only way i could see offering arb is if DLee signed somewhere else before the arb offer deadline (which is very unlikely)

I don't think we can make any presumptions on 2011's roster

If you were the family that invested almost $900B and that company is under-performing against expectations and your competitors (in a product sense) you are going to look at the entire product and how to upgrade. I think Castro and Colvin showed what youth can do with opportunity.

As for the starting pitching, pitching is always the gold standard so if Dempster can be traded he has value in innings and experience to a contender that should be considered.

Silva now has health issues and a high risk…if he comes back in September and performs than possibly with the Cubs at least sending the $3M from Seattle

Zambrano….well maybe something like Beltran for Z but it will have to be my bad for your bad.

That leaves Gorz and Wells. Does that mean we will see a very young staff….at least in two spots….maybe three…(I would like that)

Now on the infield there is Ramirez…could he be traded for value?

Then there is the OF….could the Cubs trade Byrd for value, Soriano? Fukudome?

I think there will be much turnover in the off-season and next year, when opportunity knocks the Cubs will open the door.

The obvious plan will be to see what the system has in replacing and improving the on the product and what they can gain and what they have to acquire?

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Aug 12, 2010 9:25 AM CDT reply actions

Could everyone be traded that has a high contract?

I get your frustration but when you start moving from trading someone as dempster or byrd to soriano and fukudome, yes it’s possible but other than the feelers the Cubs already have out there, there’s nothing to really speculate about. No one wants Lee, rami, sori or dome with their contracts. It is possible to dump salary and perhaps get a few million back, but really you handicap the team by paying hundreds of millions for them to play with someone else and save just a few yourself.

Which is why I don’t see trading Dempster or Byrd as meaningful, unless you get back a return that is very high. And something I would want to see in print rather than just a fantasy. With a number of young players on the team needing to improve having Byrd and Demp around gives you a chance of being able to win more than 20 games, and more importantly gives a good example for the kids to follow.
