OT: Little Caesar's Pizza Czar to own 3 Detroit Sports Franchises?
Little Caesar's pizza CEO Mike Ilitch currently owns the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. His wife owns the Motor City Casino. Ilitch has now set his sights on the Detroit Pistons and wants to build a new downtown arena for the Wings and Pistons.
Gee. By contrast, the Ricketts are slackers...

Now if we could just get Mr. Ilitch to buy the LIONS, then we'd have something...

Maybe he's only interested in pro teams

In all seriousness
I do have concerns about one guy owning multiple teams in a city. It could be a conflict of interest and could stifle competition.
But I also don’t give a damn about Detroit, so it evens out.

i had heard talk before on the radio
that you cannot own every sports team in one city due to a monopoly, due to being able to threaten to leave town and take all the teams, etc. now that could have just a guy on the radio blowing smoke up our asses, i dont knwo for sure.

It's a guy on the radio.
No law would prevent anyone from owning all the sports teams in a city, if such a person or group had the money to do so.

I'm not saying it is illegal
I don’t think it’s good for fans though

OK, explain.
They operate in different leagues and compete with different teams. Sure, they might wind up on the same local media, but they still have to negotiate deals with that local media.

Because I think owners should have to compete for fan dollars
and fan interest and fan love.
A guy who owns all three or four of the pro franchises doesn’t really have to go “all-in” on any of them to get that title.
Steinbrenner was more motivated by what the METS were doing than any team in his own division. People that worked for him have written that he took losses to the Mets in spring training harder than other losses.
And he had a point. When he bought the Yankees, the Mets were coming off a World Series appearance and had won the title a few years before. The Jets still had Broadway Joe. The Knicks were a power and the Nets had Dr. J. (Some puckhead can tell me what the NY hockey teams were doing)
Steinbrenner had to win the city.
It isn’t like a guy owning an Arby’s, a Taco Bell and a KFC, all competing for the food dollar for his benefit. The cost of tickets and the time involved in watching a game mean most people can only put their money toward one franchise.
I could be wrong. I’m sure someone with an MBA can explain to me how it is exactly like a guy owning a Ford dealership and a Chevy dealership and a Subaru dealership and it all being OK.
But from a competitive point of view, I think the games and the fans are best served when there are four egotistical rich guys all competing for dollars.

I'm stunned.
But I also don’t give a damn about Detroit

I'm still angry about the Pistons walking off the court

On that one, I'm in complete agreement.
It was a classless act led by (ironically) Zeke.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!
I live in metro Detroit.
If you think you've seen it all...just wait!
