As I jump around to different threads on BCB, I'm reading things that confuse me, somewhat. First let me say that I enjoy ALL your posts, whether they are meant to be serious or are written "tongue in cheek". From NBF to SWL's sarcasm to TJ's optimism to Josh's minor league wrap-up (good job on that, by the way) and Al's front page threads each day. Everyone's.I don't even mess with internet sports sites or newspapers anymore for my baseball news, or "fix", if you will, I go directly to BCB.
However, this is what bugs the hell outta me. Each and every one of us have been waiting our ENTIRE lives for this team to win a World Series. ALL of us...unless you're 103 years old, of course. Each and every year we start out hopeful, only to get our annual dose of disappointment each time the World Series rolls around and the Cubs aren't in it...again.
What I read from some of you are statements like..."The Cubs shouldn't spend an absurd amount of money on free agents...they should wait and build for the future"...or..."We shouldn't spend alot on a 1B and wait for the "kids" to develop so we can have a team for many years to come". I'm sorry...I gotta ask you all this...Shouldn't we win ONE of these World Series things FIRST, and THEN worry about a dynasty later? My folks (rest their souls) were BOTH die-hard Cubs' fans. Dad was born in 1912...mom in 1917...how many World Series did they see the Cubs win?...none...zero...nada...zilch. Am I destined for that, too? Are all of us? You'd figure they'd have won a World Series, even if pure accidental, in 102 years, wouldn't ya?
I guess the point I'm trying to make here is...do you wanna be sitting in front of your PC 5 years from now "waiting for next year" again, OR, still basking in a celebration that will be 2nd to none? This club has A-Ram, Byrd, Soriano, Fukudome, Zambrano, Silva and Dempster...all high dollar players...locked up through at least next year. Add a few real good young players in, like Castro, Colvin, Soto, DeWitt, Marshall and Marmol. Why not spend a bit more and try and steal this thing next year? Or is this organization just intent on riding these high dollar contracts out to the end? Isn't that MORE of a waste of money than spending on 1 or 2 more free agents in 2011 and trying to win now?
Well, either way...rebuild and wait, or jump in and go for it...I'll be there waiting...along with you. Only thing is this...I'm 52 years old now...desperation is setting in!. I've seen the Bears win...the Bulls win...the Blackhawks (although not a big hockey fan) win...and (unfortunately) that baseball team from the other side of town, win. None of them, in NO way, would ever compare to a Cubs' World Series win...to me. Go Cubs!!!
