Cubs vs. Padres Preview, Monday 9/27, 9:05 CT: The NL West Race Beckons Again

Write your own caption.

Last week, the Cubs did the Padres a favor by losing two of three to the Giants at Wrigley Field.

This week, the Cubs could return that favor -- or help out the Giants again by defeating San Diego. If they do, maybe the Giants could give the Cubs a cut of their playoff revenue?

Yes, that's a joke. The Giants are 88-68 and lead the 87-68 Padres by half a game. In turn, the Padres currently lead the wild card by half a game over the 87-69 Braves. While the Cubs are in San Diego for four, the Giants are off today, then play three vs. the Diamondbacks at home. The Giants and Padres play each other to end the season next weekend, in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Braves have three against the Marlins at home, then three vs. the Phillies at home. There has never been a three-way tie for a postseason berth (or two, in this case) in MLB history. If the Giants, Braves and Padres all finish with identical records, the Giants and Padres would play one game for the NL West title; the loser would then play the Braves for the wild card.

In a year that's been so disappointing for the Cubs, being part of critical games -- even for another team -- at the end of the season, makes them more interesting. I'd love to see the three-way tie. Let's go ... tie!

Tim Stauffer has made one career start (in 2005, so largely irrelevant) and one relief appearance (a scoreless inning on August 18 at Wrigley Field) against the Cubs. Aramis Ramirez is 1-for-3 against him. He's pitched pretty well (2.57 ERA in 21 innings over four starts) for the Padres since joining the rotation in September.

Carlos Zambrano had a very good outing against the Padres on August 19 at Wrigley Field, allowing only one run in six innings. Sean Marshall had his worst outing of the year and the Cubs lost the game. Z is still walking too many hitters, but would love to finish the year by helping knock the Padres out of the race. Ryan Ludwick is the Padre who hits him best (7-for-16, .438, two HR).

Hope Z has a great game tonight. I’ll be watching the Bears but if they are sucking I’ll switch to the Cubs.

Yes

Cardinals are EVIL, Packers are good. I have no problem wanting to beat them, but the organization is unique in sports. As I have mentioned I fell in love with them because I spent childhood summers in Door County and got the news from Green Bay. Packer fans are far crazier & committed than any other fans in any sport, even Cub fans. I think this is because they have not much else to do, root for in the Green Bay area, but that is how it is. I love that a city of around 100,000 has kept an NFL franchise

Trust me there is nothing like Green Bay

I have mentioned this before and I am not kidding, in June the HEADLINE on the news will be a reserve right tackle injuring their thumb. There is nothing else of significance in the greater Green Bay area. It is not the intensity of the Bears rivalry , it is just general intensity. I always found it funny that Milwaukee which used to host a number of games, had to give them up because unlike Green Bay they could not afford an updated facility.

Look I am a Cub fan, and I have season tickets which I kept for 20 years of living in NYC and now I am mostly unemployed and will still keep them , but overall I could not hold a candle to Packer fans in general.
In Chicago this is a big game , in Green Bay this is the main news story year round.

trust me i know more than you might believe about the Packers

and i am not doubting their fanbase, just stating truth about other fan bases.

my Aunt and Uncle in Wisconsin have shares in the Packers from BOTH times they were made available. My uncles father (my aunt is my dads sister, so he married in) played for both the Bears and Packers back in the day.

Wally Dreyer

So, no it is not just an outside opinion of mine, I do know about the franchise, and its fans.

hell, another friend of mine happens to be a season ticket holder for the Packers, and he never once has said what you are proclaiming as fact. he has said that Bengals and Viks fans are the worst ever, and I bet if we were viking fans we would have a different opinion as well.

so no I am not just saying it because I am a Bears fan, but because every fan base has real crazy fans (look at the Raiders if you truly dont believe me) and they also have bandwagon fans as well.

Not a question that Packer fans are "better"

but they are indeed crazier than any other fan base. Maybe lack of choices but they are. Bears fans have other options for sports , Packer fans don’t.

I lived near Joliet for the first 30 years of my life. Since 1988, I live in Fond du Lac and work in Oshkosh. I will always love the Bears and hate the Packers with a passion.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
