Mike Quade, Baseball Lifer, Having Good Managerial Audition
Just so you don't think I'm all Ryne Sandberg, this is a good profile of Mike Quade. He does have an impressive resume and his players said great things about him. He's done a good job and does deserve consideration.

so you are discounting Dawson?
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
My brother made me a Quade t-shirt as a gift
a few years back with iron on lettering. One by one all the letters all fell off in the wash. I’m going to have to get some fabric glue and put them back on because the more I hear about him the more I’m liking him.

Like I was sayin'
We could be in far worse shape than to have two good in-house managerial choices going into the offseason.
Great article.
I’ll tell you this: if I had to pick either Sandberg or Quade, I’d go with Sandberg. Having said that, I have a world of respect for Mike Quade, and if he gets the job, I’ll be 100 percent behind him.
"Don't complain to me about the stormy weather, boys. Just bring the ship into port." --Steve Stone, September 2004
Hendry sure was quoted a lot in that article.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim quietly suggested the story to the reporter, as a way of increasing Quade’s profile and possibly his chances. Hendry has been pretty mum about the managerial opening since Lou announced his retirement. Now, he opens up like this?
And yes, I know I’m doing a fair bit of speculating.
Quade should be the choice
No ego. Fair. Holds players accountable. What’s not to like?
"When the day comes with that last winning run and I'm crying and covered in beer. I'll look to the sky and know I was right to think someday we'll go all the way." - Vedder
Nothing, as fair as I can see.
But Sandberg hasn’t really had a chance to show us if there’s anything about him that we wouldn’t like.
Question: Whom are you speculating would have a higher ceiling?
Isn’t that the real question or are you looking for a manager to take you from C to B as Reinsdorf once paraphrased?
BTW: Isn’t it relative to speculate what kind of coaching staff each might bring?
Could Sandberg bring a Bowa to 3B? How about a bench coach or pitching coach?
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Bowa
is the rumored bench coach for Don Mattingly.
Quade
If he was a serious candidate when he was first named manager then he should remain a serious one, but if he wasn’t, than he shouldn’t be. I applaud the job that he’s done but, IMO, one of the biggest mistakes a team can make, whether its judging young players or a prospective manager, is to put too much stock into both spring training as well as September baseball. The team is doing well, but it is doing well under abnormal circumstances and while many say that this is a commentary on Piniella and that Piniella should have been let go sooner because of it are making a lot of assumptions.
Well said...
…real pressure does strange things to players and even managers and everyone reacts differently. I to, wonder how much Quade’s record really means.
I have nothing against him and I do like his approach and you have to say he has also “paid his dues” as much or more than anyone. If given a chance, he may do as well as anyone else could with the team he is given.
If I’m Ricketts, I would still make every effort to let Girardi know you want him (when the time is right). If it doesn’t work, than you move on.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Very good article.
Like I said, I’m in the Sandberg camp but can easily live with Quade.
Sandberg for manager!
Cubs got to go with the best man for the job
I admit it. I am biased for Sandberg. I would love for Ryno to get the job. But I think that Quade has done a very good job since replacing Piniella. The players seem to be responding and a few of them came out this week to endorse him. Those are good signs. However, it doesn’t guarantee that Quade manages the Cubs next year.
I think that if the Cubs hire Quade as the permanent manager they should ask Sandberg to be Quade’s bench coach. Trammell will not be back next year. He’ll probably go to the Diamondbacks and reunite with Gibson. Sandberg could go to the Cubs, be bench coach and get some major league experience at the coaching level. If the Cubs hire Sandberg as the permanent manager they should ask Quade to be Sandberg’s bench coach.
I will say that the Cubs are finishing strong in 2010. That doesn’t mean anything for this year, but usually when teams finish strong at the end of the year it bodes well for the next year. We saw the Reds and Padres finish strong last year and both teams have been successful this year. It’s not a guarantee for 2011, but I think that it could bode well for the future of the Cubs.
If Giradi does not leave the Yankee's
Quade will be the Manager next year!
