Cubs vs. Astros Preview, Monday 9/6, 1:20 CT: Shooting For Third Place

What is Geo thinking as he rounds the bases following yesterday's HR?

There are some who want to see the Cubs lose to get better 2011 drafting position. I'm not one of those people. Play the games to win.

The Cubs trail the third-place Astros by 5.5 games going into this series; in addition to these three games, the Cubs will finish the season with three games in Houston, so they have plenty of opportunity to catch them (they also have to pass the Brewers, who are currently in fourth place 4.5 games ahead of the Cubs).

As they had done against the Pirates before their last series with them last week, the Cubs have not done well vs. Houston so far this year, losing two of three in all four series they have played. The Cubs have been outscored by only eight runs total in the 12 games -- here's why.

The four Cubs wins have been by scores of 7-2, 8-5, 14-7 and 5-2, total score 34-16 in the four wins.

The eight Cubs losses have been by scores of 4-3, 3-2, 3-1, 6-3, 11-5, 4-3, 6-1 and 8-1; the Astros have outscored the Cubs 45-19 in those games. Three of the losses were by one run; the Cubs have won their last four one-run games.

Onward; let's win this series, too. Also, use this (and the overflow) game threads to follow the Iowa/Memphis game today -- it begins at 1:05 CDT. If Iowa wins, they're in the PCL playoffs; lose and they're out. Here is the MiLB.com Gameday link for the Iowa/Memphis game and here is where you should be able to find the live audio for that game.

Wandy Rodriguez has started twice against the Cubs this year, with a win (giving up five runs) and a no-decision (giving up two). You're right: that doesn't make any sense. The Cub he's faced the most is Aramis Ramirez (10-for-34), but A-Ram may not play today. Lifetime he's 5-4, 2.98 in 15 career starts vs. the Cubs.

First, Carlos Silva was supposed to go today. Then they switched him to Tuesday, then back to today... and finally, settled on him going tomorrow. So, today's start goes to Casey Coleman. Coleman has thrown pretty well in his last two starts; result: a win and a loss. He is making his first career start (and appearance) against the Astros.

Today's game is on WGN and FSN Houston. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Absolutely beautiful...

day for a ballgame. I’m heading to Wrigley shortly.

Too bad Coleman is pitching. And that Castro is out. And Ramirez too. Ugh. Oh well, it’s still baseball on Labor Day — gotta love it!

by kanderber on Sep 6, 2010 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

I'd feel better

if Coleman were pitching for the I-Cubs. Four wins in his final five starts for Iowa. Jackson’s only won two of his last five games and got shelled the last time out. (Although it was in Albuquerque and that was the game Iowa came back to win with seven runs in the ninth.)

It really doesn’t matter if the Chicago Cubs win. For Iowa, it’s win or pack it up for the winter.

Josh

That is sad but true.

So I’ve never listened to a minor league game before, but read your recaps. Who in the batting order should I be excited to hear they are up?

Depends on your definition of "excited"

Snyder is the big bat. If you’re cheering for Iowa to win, then Snyder is the guy to hope is at the plate. Dubois and LaHair can also hit.

If you want to know who is a prospect, Marquez Smith and Robinson Chirinos are the players with the best chance of having a major league career of note.

Cheering for Iowa today

So it was the first one. That will give us a little heads up while we are listening/getting stuff done this afternoon. :)

Yesterday's Garbage Time Classic may signal the end of the Mike Quade Miracle...

If it launches a six-game losing streak, Ryno will breathe easier and our draft position may improve slightly – both good things in the long run.

I don’t me or anyone else here has said that. I’ve said I don’t care if the Cubs lose, I said I don’t care if they decide to shut down Soto, I don’t care if they win. I’m not saying I want to see them lost, I’m saying it’s not the worst thing in the world. Of course I want to see my favorite team win.

My thoughts are similar.

This statement, is not “inaccurate”, but also isn’t totally accurate.

There are some who want to see the Cubs lose to get better 2011 drafting position. I’m not one of those people. Play the games to win.

The accurate part is, sure, there are “some” who WANT the Cubs to lose.

However, most of us loosely grouped in the “pro-draft” camp view the situation differently.

Let me explain… No, There is no time. Let me sum up.

I NEVER root for the Cubs to lose. Never. However, given the lost season, I am significantly more apathetic to whether they win or lose.

If they win, I see good things for Mike Quade, individual players who are helping lead the Cubs to victory, and flickers of hope for next year. That said, “finishing strong” means very, very little to what we should expect for next year’s Cubs.

If they lose, it does improve their draft position. Like it or not, as toonsterwu summarized elsewhere, the higher your pick, the better your chances of having a successful draft. That said, I am under no disillusionment that a higher pick guarantees anything for the Cubs. Obviously, good players are found at all points in the draft. WHO is picking is more important than when you pick. But, this does not erase the slight advantage to making a selection before an increased number of your competitors.

I view the chance to draft higher as more valuable than “finishing strong”. The fact that others feel differently is perfectly fine with me… and a point we can all feel free to debate.

However, I humbly ask you, Al, to please stop inferring that many of us are “rooting for the Cubs to lose”. That simply isn’t the case for most of us. The pain of each loss is simply substantially muted by the fact that we are “shooting for third place”. I will always root for the Cubs to win each individual game. However, if they would happen to lose more often than they would win the rest of the month, the silver lining is the slight advantage gained in next year’s draft.

Shut up Joe Morgan.

Win, lose, or draw, the onus is on Tom Ricketts

to make what he can out of the situation the Cubs are in and improve the team. Not just for the short-term, but also for the long haul.

I'll go to my grave believing Armando Galarraga tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history.

does it change his point at all? I think not.

He has stated and/or inferred

in a number of places that he is tired of so many people rooting for the Cubs to lose. If the intent was “some” like a small handful, it wouldn’t be worth noting at the top of a game preview.

And I noted that it was “some”.

I said this not long ago when the Cubs were facing Bronson Arroyo....

and I’ll say the same thing today about Wandy Rodriguez: I can’t believe his lifetime record against the Cubs is only 5-4. He is one of two guys in the division (Arroyo being the other) who the Cubs always seem to lose to. Arroyo’s record against the Cubs, as I came to find out, was a winning record, but not dominating as I thought it would be. I could probably include Carpenter in this discussion also, but Carpenter is different because he is a bonafide ace, a guy who would be the #1 starter on most teams in the league (although, ironically, with the season Wainwright has had, Carpenter may not be the #1 guy on his own team anymore).

Aside from Jackson, is there any hope for the major league club at the AAA level? Looks like a team of mostly career minor leaguers to me. Will be nice to see how Jackson does is a big game situation today.

Anybody got an update on Hak-Ju Lee? I"m just wondering how he’s doing. He is supposed to move Castro to second, at least that’s what I heard

by Bad Midget on Sep 6, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Had a good season for Peoria

Hit .283/.353/.351 with 32 steals. I think he’ll develop some power as he gets up, but he’s never going to hit for much. His glove is still his greatest asset.

He reminds a lot of people of Elvis Andrus. He’s still probably two years away from the majors though.

by Josh Timmers on Sep 6, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

When I mean some power

I mean enough doubles so that his SLG is actually higher than his OBP. I don’t mean he’s going to hit double-digit HRs ever.

by Josh Timmers on Sep 6, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

To be fair

the Cubs promoted Castro and Colvin straight from AA, and there are a lot of potential major leaguers there.

I can see Marquez Smith having a good major league career. He might never be a starter, but a good glove 3B who can play 2B in a pinch.

Yeah I was just wondering becuase of Lee’s defense if he’s going to move Castro over to second. I’ve seen Baseball Americas say that a couple times, I think

Castro’s defense can be really good and I think he could be a gold glover at second. Then again Hak-Ju is probably a couple years away. Though I do like the walk rate for a young korean, that’s very encouraging to see.

by Bad Midget on Sep 6, 2010 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't make that call

until I’m forced to.

Lee might fizzle out and then Castro stays at short. In any case, Lee is not going to play in the majors next season. We don’t know what the Cubs are going to look like in 2012. Maybe you end up trading one of them.

Lee will be the superior defensive shortstop, IMO.

I don't in my life time I've ever seen the Cubs

have two people that have above average SS skills

The moment Castro came up it was exciting because we actually had a major league shortstop playing there. One of the best moments of the Cub season was seeing ryan theriot over at second, oh wait, no , it was theriot on the bench that made be happy.

Kess and Roger Metzger

Last time we had 2 such quality SS…neither a great hitter esp. Metzger who went to Hou in the expansion draft (I think).
Jose Hernandez might’ve overlapped Dunston a few years toward the end of Shawn’s time here.
Dont’ forget Nomar and Neifi!!

by QuincyCub on Sep 6, 2010 1:05 PM CDT reply actions

I remember when everyone was so excited when we got him. He was supposed to be like the best shorstop in a long time. Too bad it didn’t work out, because that was one hell of a trade Hendry pulled off.

He hasn't been quite the same

since they moved him to the pen in anticipation of a major league callup. Then they decided to call up Cashner instead and they moved him to the pen.

I don’t know if that had an impact or not.
