Tennessee Smokies Wrap: Game 1

The Smokies fell to the the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 8-3 in Game 1 of the first round of the best-of-five Southern League Playoffs.

The game got off to a bad start when Chris Archer allowed two runs in the second inning. But the roof caved in during the fourth inning, when Archer failed to retire any of the six batters he faced, and two Diamond Jaxx hitters homered.  All six runners eventually came around to score. Archer's final line on the night was 3+ innings pitched, giving up eight runs on eight hits. Two of the eight runs were unearned.  Archer walked three and struck out three.

After that, Kyle Smit, Ryan Buchter and Aaron Shafer kept West Tennessee off the scoreboard the rest of the way (although Smit did allow a runner inherited from Archer to score), but the hole was too great with the Smokies down eight runs.

Third baseman Russ Canzler hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to get the Smokies on the board. Canzler was 1 for 5 on the night.

Center fielder Tony Campana went 2 for 4 with a walk and the other Smokies RBI. First baseman Blake Lalli was 2 for 3 with two walks. He scored on Canzler's home run.

Second baseman Tony Thomas was 3 for 4 tonight.  It must have been the haircut.

Game 2 is tomorrow night at  6:15 Central Time at Smokies Park. You can listen to the game for free online at smokiesonradio.com

I was hoping the Smokies would win the first two

So I would have an excuse to drive down to Jackson and get my free ticket to see them clinch there tomorrow.

Somebody take Aramis' bat off the restricted list, please.

How Far Do You Live From Jackson, TN?

Do you live in southern Illinois somewhere?

I'm in Champaign

I figure it’s about a 6-hour drive. Probably not realistic, but I’d like to see some of these guys in person in a game that matters.

Somebody take Aramis' bat off the restricted list, please.

That's A Drive!

If you lived in Marion, Carbondale, or Harrisburg, or points south in Illinois, it wouldn’t be such a bad drive.
