Random Tidbits from the Convention

OK having recovered from another horrible performance from American Airlines that got me home at 2.30 AM on Monday (I am switching back to United after 12 years) I will give my semi stream of conscience info from the Convention. I go to as many sessions as possible and only get autographs if nothing else is going on or I find some hapless guy surrounded int the lobby (this years victim was Randy Wells). I went to all or parts of the management session, pitching evolution, battery mates, kids press conference, remembering Santo, 25 ( 4 Cub players who are 25) & Down on the Farm. All but Down on the Farm were fun. Farm was dominated by the Vine Line guy and when I left 5 minutes before it was supposed to end they had not ope ned the floor to questions.

Larry Rothschild. I did not see this mentioned but Hendry was asked about allowing Rothschild more or less at the last minute and he (Hendry) made it clear that Larry had a personal issue that made it important for him to go to Tampa ( Yankees ST site) and he would never have stood in his way. He noted Rothschild had turned down many opportunities in the past to stay with the Cubs.

Lou Vs Quade. Well someone finally asked the players about this and it was a 10 year old. Byrd took the question and was very diplomatic about how both were great & smart managers, but he said a couple of times that Quade was more "energetic" than Lou. Code for awake in the dugout?

One kid asked DeWitt how he could get his mother to switch from being a Dodger fan to being a Cub fan. DeWitt suggested taking her to a game, but he also recounted that he was pretty shocked when he got traded having been with the Dodgers since 04, then he walked into the lobby of the hotel the Cubs were staying at and was stunned to see over 200 fans. He said he had never seen anything like that as a Dodger.

Theriot eating dirt. This was reported in at least one paper, but when asked if there would be "fireworks" when Theriot faced the Cubs, Hill was not shy about saying he would eat dirt for a while. Also worth noting that the pitchers went out of their way to praise Hill in several sessions, so yes they really like him.

I really love some of questions the kids ask. One wanted to know if the players practice getting hit? Byrd explained it was not really something you practiced and it hurt, the kid responded by asking why they couldn't use the automatic pitching machines to practice getting hit.

Another wanted to know why HWSNBN "woo wooed". Byrd said he had no idea ( but unfortunately for Al had earlier spoken fondly of HWSNBN) and the Cubs PR guy Peter Chase chimed in  that "I doubt we will ever know"

I wish I could do a better job of communicating how informative and fun these sessions really are. I remember walking in on the pitching one as someone was talking in great detail on pitching strategy and I was trying to figure out who it was, it turned out to be Mark Riggins. While I am sure players are on their best behavior, you would be surprised how funny and smart they can be. You really can learn things and in some cases they really do answer questions.

During the Dominican session,

Aramis Ramirez said that his father (who is a doctor) wanted him to also become a doctor. He was adamantly against Aramis playing baseball.

What was really amazing was that Aramis started playing baseball at a later age, maybe 11 or 13 (can’t remember exactly what he said.) Aramis only attended 1 tryout camp (for the pirates) and was immediately signed.

Hey, it's a new century!

I had forgotten that bit about Larry...

Hendry was asked, basically, why he was allowed to leave (while still under contract I guess) without compensation. As you said, Hendry stressed how important personal relationships are to him and mentioned Rothschild had family reasons for needing to be down in Tampta.

What?!?!?!

“Also worth noting that the pitchers went out of their way to praise Hill in several sessions, so yes they really like him.”

I have to say, I am just shocked!!! I thought everyone on BCB knew more than the Cubs management.

Koyie

In reference to baseball players knowledge of the game, it’s worth noting that Joe Morgan is supposedly an expert on baseball, too. Koyie might be a great friend and teammate, but he isn’t very good at baseball. It’s kind of difficult to prove whether Koyie makes his teammates better baseball players. I believe his CERA was worse last year than Geo’s. He was abysmal at throwing at runners attempting to steal bases. And he had a lower winning percentage than Geo last year. What does Koyie do for the Cubs that Wellington Castillo couldn’t have done for half the price?

Remarkable

Truly, a remarkable job of proving the point. Well done, Frank.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

Not sure it proves anything.

What Hill brings, according the guys actually playing, are intangibles. It’s my guess that the Cubs pitchers will preform better with a guy they feel comfortable with. If that means coughing up a few more bucks, so be it. There’s too much invested into this current rotation to gamble on a marginally better player like Wellington.

And for what it’s worth, Hill is one season removed from throwing out 40% of base stealers.

Sorry, I wasn't clear...

I actually meant that Frank was proving your point about people on BCB acting like they know more than the Cubs management.

The players themselves were praising Hill, yet here comes a know-it-all who tells us that “Koyie isn’t very good at baseball.” Just silly.

He farking ISN'T

He’s not good at baseball. There are many, many, many, many, stats that prove that out. Great, the players like him. Baseball is a business and players come and go. You do not sign one of the worst statistical catchers in baseball for almost a million dollars when you are clearly having a budget crunch, because he’s “liked”

We aren’t a good enough team to be wasting roster spots and money on the Kevin Millars of the world

I think the catcher/pitcher relationship is unique and important.

It was clear that the pitchers really loved working with Hill, that he both called a good game and
helped calm them down on the mound when they got into jams. There is little doubt that the Cubs feel Hill calls a good game and I have heard some criticism of Castillo.I don’t mind having him as backup, I am concerned he got too many starts last year. On this issue I am actually willing to trust Cubs management and players over stats.

I read on NSBB

that Quade sees Cashner as a SP this season. Doesn’t sound like much, but made my day.

Why don't you try Southwest Airlines?

Don’t get all the perks but they are cheap and they get you from Point A to Point B

I took Southwest in for the final weekend series

My outgoing flight was nearly FIVE hours late. Now they were MUCH nicer than American and fed
us sodas & snacks while we waited, but still it was 5 hours. The dirty little secret with Southwest ( and other small carriers) out of New York is that they have no clout and get screwed by air traffic.
My 5 hour delay was caused by weather, but United, American & Delta all got clearance to leave before us despite having later departure times. The other downside of Southwest is that it is harder for them to recover from either weather or mechanical delays as they have far fewer flights and no reciprocal agreements with other airlines. However I do like them and will probably take them again. Midway is a much better airport in terms of fewer delays.

Fair enough.

I’ve never had a problem with SW. But that’s probably because the flight from Chicago to Columbus and vice-versa is only about 45 minutes, a piece of cake, and I’ve flown it about 25 times. But that’s why I suggested. Still I do like flying into Midway better though.

PS they did give me at total of $225 in credit

half automatically and half when I complained so better than AA which of course gives you nothing. If I am not in a “hurry” I would take Southwest. From NYC, Chicago is really the only place of interest they fly direct. I certainly will take them for one trip this year to use up my credit and I will play it by ear after that.

There you go.

Yea they do have great customer service. Pair of shoes were stolen from my bag once and they immediately refunded w/ no questions asked. I flew into La Guardia back in ’09 for a Yankee game and it was pretty cool coming in right over the river (river, right?)

I truly love that session.

They ask a wonderful mix of sweet and bizarre questions and the players try so hard to answer them. I think they enjoy it more than any other session too.

Agreed.

Last year was better though. This year was strictly just baseball related questions, last year was a little more personal.

Still the best question and answer was:

“Do you guys like Taylor Swift?”
Sean Marshall – " I mean, I like Taylor Swift."

Classic.

They asked about pets this year

I sympathized with Pena and one other player whose dogs dies and they have a hard time getting another one. I have never gotten over my dog’s death and it was almost 25 years ago.

I had to get up at one point.

When I got back, my fiance told me I missed the best questions. It must have been during this time. Figures.

One of the players offered his pet parrot

to anyone who would take it. I am a big Colvin fan as he talked about missing his dog last season and how happy he would be this year with his wife & dog with him. Not sure which made him happier.

Still hurts to think about losing my first dog.

Autographs only if nothing else is going on

I did the same thing last year. The sessions are fantastic – I can’t imagine skipping out on one to stand in line.

Excellent post

Having always coached basketball down here, I’ve never had the open weekend to attend the convention, but I plan to some time soon. Thanks for the insight, man!
