Ten Years since 9/11 and Cubs are in NY
I was planning out my schedule for Cubs games I want to go to this year. Being that I live in CT, I really hope Cubs are better than we are projecting because for the first time in a while, East Coast Cubs fans have a really nice schedule for seeing the team. There are weekend series against Mets, Red Sox and Phillies. Plus July 4th is against the Nationals.
However, looking at the schedule I couldn't help but notice that the Cubs are playing the Mets on 9/11 in NYC...the tenth anniversary of the horrible attacks. The Yankees by the way are in LA that weekend. Personally, if one team should be playing in NY that day I think it should be the Yankees since they symbolized the state in the 2001 World Series.
Regardless, has anyone heard of this game being a special attraction? Any special guests, moment of silence, etc? Is there any specific reason why Cubs are in NY that weekend? Is it more than just the random schedule being made? I know I'm looking into this probably too much but am I the only one who thinks it's a bit strange that any game is being played in NY on 9/11?

the schedule makers try very hard to make sure that one and only one NY team is home ever day
same thing with the Cubs/Sox. If both are gone at the same time, that means that there is another instance when they are both home at the same time. They really want to avoid that.
9/11/11 is a Sunday, so of course there are games. I imagine that there will be a commeration/moment of silence before the game, but not a whole lot more.
ask not what the Cubs can do for you - ask what you can do for the Cubs.
So do the beer vendors
Maybe the schedule makers and the beer vendors are in cahoots.

I attended a sox game for a work outing
We were siting in the right field pavillion seats. I looked up and I saw my Old Style vendor from Wrigley Field – the guy that my buddies and I always buy from. We gave each other that odd look of “what are you doing here?” and then the “I won’t tell if you don’t tell.” look away.

Many of the vendors in Chicago...
… work both ballparks, so they can have jobs all summer. Some of them work the United Center in the winter, too.

Oh yeah
The funny part was the idea that I could run into this one vendor, given all the vendors working at a sox game.

How Often Do Cubs Fans Attend Sox Games?
I’m talking about when the Cubs aren’t playing the White Sox. I’m thinking that it’s cheaper to go a White Sox game. The Cell is on the same red line that Wrigley is. For financial reasons, it wouldn’t be that crazy an idea for Cubs fans to go to White Sox games on occasion. I don’t think people in Chicago know how lucky they are to have 2 MLB teams in the city. The Brewers are only 90 miles to the north. Where else can you find 3 MLB teams in such close proximity to each other? Would Cubs fans make the occasional day trip to Milwaukee to see a game that didn’t involve the Cubs?
I’m not suggesting that the number of White Sox games attended would be as high as the number of Cubs games attended. The number of Milwaukee trips that don’t involve the Cubs wouldn’t be as high as the number of White Sox games attended.

I used to...
… go to some of the Sox weekday afternoon games, even when they weren’t playing the Cubs. It was, as you say, inexpensive and I love baseball and it was fun to see other teams. Same thing, I used to go to the occasional Brewers game when they were an AL team.
I don’t really have the time to do this any more, but I think there are more people who do this than you might imagine.

I went to a lot of White Sox games when they played at Old Comiskey
Not so many after they moved to that concrete mausoleum across the street. And hardly ever now with ticket prices so high.
But yeah, coming from a one-team/league town (Cleveland), I definitely reveled in the fun and joy of being able to see every team from both leagues every season if I wanted to.

Prices Are High Now
Even on the southside, the ticket prices are on up there. I can’t blame anybody for not wanting to pay those high ticket prices.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Probably too early to figure out what kind of ceremony, etc. they will have.
But I’m sure there will be one.
FWIW, the Yankees play the Angels at Anaheim on 9/11.

I was living in NY at the time
and although the Yanks are the premier team in NY, the Mets were just as involved in 911 recovery. They wore the NYPD and Fire dept hats through the rest of the season. Bobby valentine and Mike Piazza were very involved in alot of stuff. Not saying the Yanks were not involved, but the Mets were just as much if not more. Granted the Yanks went to the Series that year, but they lost.

I remember that too
But I think the World Series in NY stands out more than anything else. They still show footage of America coming together in NYC at Yankee Stadium. That’s what I think of.
plus it seems that the Mets are like the Sox in Chicago
they are the “second/other” team

Does U of Hawaii play football or basketball on 12/7?

10 years since the attacks
Any other year it wouldn’t seem as big of a deal….
I dunno.
Without trying to sound insensitive, people don’t stop normal activities just because it’s 9/11, whether it’s one year, five, ten, or whatever. It falls during the baseball season — they play games. I’m sure they’ll have a commemorative ceremony at the Cubs/Mets game. I don’t see why you’d think they wouldn’t play in NYC that day, especially because it’s a Sunday. Do you expect all commerce to come to a halt in NYC on 9/11/11?
Then the terrorists really would have won.

You won't believe this
But they actually compared his statement to the mayors statements of going to a movie when everyone was snowed in from the Northeast blizzard last week.
Now blizzard and terrorist attack -- I couldn’t believe the news was comparing the two.
I really think you had to live in NY to understand the effects
I don’t mean to belittle what you’re saying but please hear me out:
One year after 9/11 I started college in Massachusetts. Not too far from NY. They had an hour of silence at school and reccomended everyone go outside for participating. With the exception to people from NY, everyone was horsing around.
I think when you live pretty close to a horrible situation like that you become more sensitive. This is why I’m wondering why they have any games in NY on 9/11.
You do however bring a point that the terrorists would win if we stopped and did nothing all day. I didn’t look at it that way before.
You're the only person from NY I have ever heard express the opinion that games should not be played on 9/11.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Games should be played
I was just surprised they were being played in NY. And to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have even thought twice about had I not realized the Cubs were playing the Mets that day. I was curious other peoples opinion. But Al, you’re right - atleast from everyone on here - I do seem to be the only one with this opinion.
I was on the Tapanzee bridge when the second tower was hit
I agree with you to a degree, and I remember stopping work and doing the moment of silence for a couple of years, but either way, if baseball can be played again 2 weeks after it happened, it can be played 10 years after. Also, I would bet there has been baseball on most 911 dates since then, why is 10 year anniv any different?
"Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half is physical." -Yogi Berra
My fiancee was a student at NYU and witnessed the first tower being hit
And we’re getting married on that weekend (although on 9/10 as it is the Saturday) in NY. Certainly would never want to forget about what happened that day, but life should move on. Something as American as a baseball game seems like the perfect way to honor the memory of what happened that day and our resilience as a country since.

Citi is a beautiful park
Alot of Met fans dont like it because of the Jackie Robinson tribute and that it looks like the classic Ebbets field, but I loved it.

Meh.
Citi Field is OK, nothing special. The food was pretty good, but the tickets are wildly overpriced — not to mention it’s almost impossible to find out exactly how much the ticket you want costs, because they have over 200 different pricing levels:

Brooklyn Cyclones
With those ticket prices being what they are, I can see why the Brooklyn Cyclones draw so well.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Citi is great. I like it best of the 21st Century parks I've seen...
…in D.C., Philly, & Cincy, as well as the new Yankee Stadium. Looking forward to visiting the ballparks in Pittsburgh and Detroit, which always seem to get the great reviews.

Detroit is pretty nice...

A Nice Comment Made About Something In Detroit
I’ve never been to Detroit, but I’m glad to hear that the ballpark is at least nice. Outside of that, I hear nothing but bad stuff. I feel bad for the people in Detroit that their city gets so much negative publicity. The negative publicity that Memphis gets doesn’t compare to what Detroit gets with the crime, poverty, and political corruption.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
I agree
Cinci was nothing great. I am hitting detroit on my way to Wrigley this year. I just always loved the look of Ebbets field, and when they used it as a “model” I thought it was great.

If you can get the tickets, I'd suggest going to this game
September 11, 2011 is a Sunday and this will probably be the ESPN Sunday Night game. I would expect NYC’s finest – NYPD, NYFD – to be present and that there would be a ceremony and moment of silence.

OT: All For the Players
I am very much against an 18-game regular season schedule in the NFL. The 16-game regular season schedule poses more than enough danger for the players. Adding two more regular season games would make that danger even worse. I hope the NFLPA stands strong and united.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Counterpoint
And I’m not saying I’m in favor of expanding the schedule. Fans are pissed because they are charged full ticket prices for a pair of exhibition games that are really nothing more than glorified scrimmages.
There has to be a middle ground somewhere.

On Target About Preseason Ticket Prices
Oh, yeah, that is baloney (keeping the language clean) that those preseason games are full price. Even if I lived closer to Nashville or St. Louis, I wouldn’t consider buying season tickets for that reason. The NFL should keep the four preseason games (albeit at full price) and 16 regular season games. 18 regular season games is too many.
At the college level, I’d like to see division 1 FBS teams go back to 11 regular season games. Just a four-team playoff would be nice, too. Of course, the shortened regular season has no chance of happening because there’s simply too much money to be made with having the 12th regular season game. Football has always been a rough sport, but it’s rougher today than it ever has been.
