How will they use him?
I know Wellenmeyer has mostly been used in the past as a starting pitcher. Can we assume that’s not the case here? And that they’re just looking to fill out their bullpen?
His starting numbers don’t inspire much confidence.

Classic scrap-heap pickup.
Wellemyer could have a good spring and become the Cubs’ third (or fourth) righty out of the pen, or he can be released.
Good low-risk move. The Cubs haven’t done a good job of finding bargain relievers since Ryan Dempster.

Or to throw 91 MPH
straight stuff in BP in Zona
ga-fwwwhat the hell
And he is preferred to anyone from our middling minor league pitching corps why?
Um, Borto ...
did you watch the Cubs’ daycare bullpen last spring? Our “minor league pitching corps” got the season off on a terrible foot.
This is a non-guaranteed contract. If Wellemyer pitches well, he could be at the back of the bullpen making a relatively paltry $800,000. If he doesn’t, we send him packing with little lost.
I’m not saying this WILL work. But it’s worth a shot.
I guess.
The one downside that comes to mind is Wellemeyer will take away some spring training innings from one or more of the many other pitchers in camp. Then again, I suppose there are still plenty to go around.
Todd’s numbers the last couple of seasons have been straight-up awful — not that he’s ever been a particularly good pitcher to begin with. He had .259 BABIP in 2010 was still really unsuccessful. I’m tempted to say this is one of Hendry’s courtesy/charity signings.

There's just no risk, daver.
As you noted, there are lots of ST innings to go around, and if Wellemyer gets crushed early, he can be gone before the mid-point in camp.
It seems like every season, some team pulls a guy off the scrap heap, and that guy becomes a valuable middle reliever. If the contract is not guaranteed, I have no problem if the Cubs want to give Wellemyer a flyer.
Yeah, that's true.
It’s a decent depth move — as long as one does not look closely at Wellemeyer’s Fangraphs page. (Shivers.)

Remember how long it took
for us to sent Kennard packing last year?
Well, the deal is non-guaranteed
so he could be let go, or shuffled to Iowa for inexpensive insurance in case of emergency — assuming he shows the team something in AZ.

SARAH SPAIN!
This is a good move. I don’t really see the negative…four of his last seven seasons have been below 100 ERA+, but this is chump change for something that could be “just incase”.

I think this is a great move!!!
It is awesome to see Jim Hendry working at such a high level!!!!!!!!
I am not sure how we will be stopped next year!!!!!
He's been awful the past two seasons
And I’d hate to think he could come in and pitch 20 innings of good ball in ST and that would make everyone think he’s turned his career around.
Not liking this.
We don't have a ton of right-handed options behind Marmol and Wood.
Why not throw one more guy into the mix when he’s not getting a guaranteed deal?
Your sarcasm would have remained funny ...
if it didn’t reflect your overreaction to trivial moves. Why get upset (and act like a tool box) over a non-guaranteed contract?
I am not! I think its a great move!
6 good innings and slam the door with Wellmeyer, Wood, and Marmol!!!!
I can't tell anymore.
Do you really care that much about such a meaningless signing, or are you so desperate for attention that you’ll trot out your tired act for such a meaningless and no-risk move?
Meh
He could be the sixth pitcher in the bullpen, and that may not even happen. Let’s see how he does in spring training. I wouldn’t get too excited, if he pitches well. If he’s awful, the Cubs can let him go.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Couldn't hurt, might help,

I can live with the loss of Gorzo now
cause Welly is back!!
Yeesh
Not sure why we picked up Wellemeyer. He has never really been good out of the bullpen, and I hope we aren’t considering him as a starter.
This was a great move by Hendry!!! So Proactive!
I only wish it could have been done before the convention so he could have gotten the ovation that Wood got in his return!
They don't view him as a starter.
If he threw left handed, there MIGHT be a reason for worry.
We picked him up as another option for the back of the bullpen. Period.
I was just thinking...
…this might make a little more sense if Wellemeyer was a left-handed starter. Then again, that would make it a lot scarier, too. Like you said, though, it’s just a depth move with no big risks so…
Contributing Editor, SB Nation Chicago. Please follow us on Twitter!
If he were a lefty starter, he would have received a guaranteed contract.
That would have been a terrible decision. As it is, Wellemyer will probably get beat to hell in Mesa, and we’ll forget about this by April 1.
Or, maybe, he puts together a decent year as a reliever who didn’t get a 3-year deal from Hendry. Are we so angst-ridden as a fanbase that we go crazy over non-guaranteed contracts?
Sadly, I already know the answer to that question.
I don't think anbody is going crazy over this move
But Wellemeyer except for one year has been pretty terrible in his entire career. And he was really, really bad when he was here before.
He'll probably end up getting released in ST.
But I don’t see the harm in giving him a look.
NEWSFLASH
Hendry makes any move…..any at all……..and the same people regurgitate the same ole here.
Numbers may not lie, but they don’t tell the whole truth (and nothing but the truth), either. -- Doug Glanville
Should there be no discussion at all?
I ask because not one single person actually bashed Hendry. JSB comes the closest and all he did is point out that Wellemeyer isn’t good.
"Oh Crap"

I mean, hell. I think Hendry is wildly incompetent and even I wasn't worked up
once I saw it was non-guaranteed. AS LONG as they don’t give him too much of a leash this is a pretty “meh” move.
"Oh Crap"
-Famous Last Words by General George Custer
Which is why to answer your previous question...
No, probably shouldn’t be discussion on this one.
then it probably shouldn't be posted on a site that discusses every move.

On the bright side
If Lou were managing the team, this would be the kind of guy he’d trot out in a close games to blow our lead with. I trust that if he sucks, Quade will use him sparingly.
Holy moly.
I go out for a couple hours and all hell breaks loose here.
Although, the Sarah Spain references are funny.
This is a minor league deal with a ST invite, nothing more. Remember this: Mike Quade was his manager for three years at Iowa, and Mark Riggins worked with him when he (Wellemeyer) was in the Cardinals organization and Riggins was minor league pitching coordinator. So those two are quite familiar with him.
Carry on.

That’s what I was thinking.
If the two of them think “the Todd” can be useful, it doesn’t instill a lot of confidence.
That said, on a non-guaranteed contract, I consider this “no harm, no foul”.

i would have to say that from a purely sentimental perspective i hated that the cubs traded him in the first place and i am glad they have brought him back. other than that, a right handed bullpen arm. i can see this signing as being worth it only for the experienced pitcher, otherwise this signing doesn’t make much sense (in terms of personnel. cash is fine).
